Great location The employees at the front desk were nice— night crew. There were 2 individually packaged face cleansing tissues in the bathroom, but no bar soap. There was a bug on the mirror and around the facet was dirty. If you are staying in the historic building, you have to walk up the stairs after getting off the elevator. The duvet didn’t smell clean. You can easily hear people snoring, talking, and TVs from other rooms. I couldn’t sleep at all.

The historic nature of the building is amazing. That comes with downsides like paper thin walls. Would only recommend if you enjoy waking up with clear conversations from your neighbors. Beautiful place and history, but won't be going again.

You can't beat the Monterey Hotel if you're looking for an affordable hotel, with a downtown location and some historic Monterey charm. It is close to the Wharf and other downtown restaurants. The aquarium and Cannery Row are an easy and scenic 30 minute stroll away.

Nice place however a lot of street noise at night and parking is costly. Most attractions were within walking distance. A large variety of restaurants and food options were available also within walking distance.

Another great stay at this classic old hotel. The location is perfect. Right in the heart of activities. A short walk to the water and more. The price is very fair for the stay. The hotel itself is old, but well maintained. Love the look inside and out. The rooms are nothing special but fine. Fireplaces nice but hardly noticeable with very low flames, disappointing. Sleep was rough with the constant sounds from the street below and the sound of a metal plate being driven over all night. So there were some issues, but nothing that won’t keep me from returning for another stay in the near future.

Amazing location right on main road. The room was nice and comfortable. Walls are a little thin and the WiFi didn’t work. The water was nice and hot and plentiful. Staff was so-so, not unkind but definitely did not Go out of there way to give any info. The pillows were so tall and stiff I had to ask for something flatter. Price was good. Location is what this hotel is all about. Besides that, very mid.

This place is haunted. It should be mentioned on website because while some people may be looking for this type of adventure, but some are not. I had booked this hotel for its historic appeal and proximity to the conference center. My colleague’s door had been wide opened, electronics relocated, and just an overall strange experience. People helping us were friendly but did not offer clear explanations for these occurrences. The money should be refunded since we did not use one of the rooms and my colleague and I stayed in the same room due to fear of the paranormal. A lot of street noise, no soap or shampoo in the dispensers.

Lots of noise during the night, thin walls and half of the hotel had no power. Not Monterey's best, this was our last resort so there weren't many options due to the time of year. If you can, book your rooms well in advance at other surrounding hotels.

I chose this hotel because the room block for my conference was full. It was a very short walk to the Portola where my meetings were and super convenient for walking around town. I was in the "new" section and the room was pretty tired. They really need to replace or clean the drapes and chairs. The bedding and bathroom were clean. A couple of the bulbs in the bathroom were burned out. The bed was just ok and the pillows were lumpy. My room did not have a thermostat and it got very warm. The fireplace did not work which was ok because I didn't need to warm up the room. I left the window open most of the time to cool it off but that let in a lot of street noise. The 4am garbage truck was loud! If I had been paying less, I might not have minded, but I'm sure the rate was higher because it was so busy. Check-in, valet, and getting help with my bags was a confusing process. The free coffee in the lobby was very good, but it would be nice to have it before 7am. It's a great location, so if you can get a good rate, it might be worth the trade off.
