The Murphys Historic Hotel is the longest continually operated hotel in California. The Hotel was built in 1856 and we try to keep our nine historic rooms as close to that time period as possible. If you are to stay within the Historic Hotel you are without T.V., Phone, A/C, and of course a bathroom... but how often do you get to share a shower down the hall? You may bump into a ghost while enjoying a little piece of history. We also have twenty modern hotel rooms that have been improved more recently with new T.V.'s, Beds, A/C's, and Windows. We do have plans to remodel all bathrooms but Rome wasn't built in a day. We also have a full service restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch, & dinner 365 days a year along with a full service saloon. The Murphys Historic Hotel is also within walking distance to over 20 different wine tasting rooms and our community park. While you are here please let me know how we are doing. We hope to see you soon!Sincerely, Brian

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Everyone is so nice Love the rooms in the old hotel The restaurant is wonderful . The filet mignon is one of the best I’ve ever had. The bar is a fun hangout and very friendly When it’s warm out the out door seating is the best but do like the old restaurant that’s indoors

I’ve spent a pretty fair amount of time in hotels in this area, since I’m from LA looking to relocate to Sac area due to work, so when house hunting I usually stay in hotels - sometimes with my family and our nanny - sometimes by myself. The hotel is ok but nothing special and definitely not worth the price. My room was not properly cleaned and the restaurant is so-so. I definitely recommend to rather stay at a cheaper nice place and rather spend money exploring the area and local restaurants etc. Also the management is very stuck up and rude when confronted with issues. I’d rather stay at motel 6 and spend my money on good restaurants than visit this place again

Murphys is a wonderful town with wineries, art, restaurants, shops and we stayed at the Murphys Historic Hotel. We were in the separate building with full bath. It was not fancy but it was clean, cool, comfortable, quiet and non-smoking. Perfect for our 1 night to visit Calaveras Big Tree State Park.

Room Tip: The hotel bar gets rowdy and noisy-which we love as we are usually in the middle of it.

The hotel and saloon are very cool. We got the Mark Twain room with 2 beds, antique furniture and a new bathroom. Since it's an old, historic hotel the room was small but very nice. The saloon had fun friendly customers and bartenders so we spent the evening socializing there. Right on the main street of town so you can walk to everything which was great.

We always love going to Murphy’s. The hotel has always been very gracious to us and very accommodating. We can usually get the room that we want every time we come. It is a wonderful place to go and visit specially with the caverns close by. Plenty of places to eat and plenty of places to go watch plays and come back. Lots of good food.

My husband and I stayed one night. Food and service was EXCELLENT! Get the baked Brie; it was so good! Staff was superb; very friendly. However, the website needs updated photos as our room, JP Morgan’s room, was NOTHING like the website photos. Our room was BARE; only a full bed, no bedside lamps, peeling wallpaper and one hard old wood chair to sit in. Bathroom was nice.
