The Murphys Historic Hotel is the longest continually operated hotel in California. The Hotel was built in 1856 and we try to keep our nine historic rooms as close to that time period as possible. If you are to stay within the Historic Hotel you are without T.V., Phone, A/C, and of course a bathroom... but how often do you get to share a shower down the hall? You may bump into a ghost while enjoying a little piece of history. We also have twenty modern hotel rooms that have been improved more recently with new T.V.'s, Beds, A/C's, and Windows. We do have plans to remodel all bathrooms but Rome wasn't built in a day. We also have a full service restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch, & dinner 365 days a year along with a full service saloon. The Murphys Historic Hotel is also within walking distance to over 20 different wine tasting rooms and our community park. While you are here please let me know how we are doing. We hope to see you soon!Sincerely, Brian

We had a great stay at Murphy’s overall. The building itself was great and well maintained. The staff and service was top class especially the young fella very welcoming and friendly. The rooms unfortunately need a bit of an upgrade they are nice but basic, the bed itself was very squeaky; great value for money but considering the price point. We had dinner the first night it was lovely but portion size was a bit smaller than we’d expected but was very enjoyable. Breakfast was delicious toast and hot drinks brought down to table and then you’re able to order a fry/other foods from the menu. A buffet offering would be nice but completely understandable given Covid situation at the moment. All staff we interacted were wearing face shields so I didn’t find this to be an issue as there were sanitising spots for entering and leaving the hotel. I would happily stay here again!

August 2021 visiting from Sacramento: We ate lunch twice, breakfast once, and bar drinks once here during our three night stay at another Murphy's location. The staff were friendly, attentive, and professional. Our first host (I think Patrick) made us feel taken care of, with quick service, checking in, and down to earth chats while taking care of everyone else. Food tasted like it came right out after being prepared rather than sitting around. I love that the prime rib sandwich's au jus came out nicely hot and tasty. Biscuits & gravy also came out hot with perfectly cooked eggs over medium. Yum! Corned beef hash was a tad salty for my hub but I thought it had good seasoning and a nice light outside crust. Great food, respectful staff, good common-sense folks, unique and clean decor. Definitely worth trying. We certainly do when we visit Murphys.

First of all I just want to say that Jackie our server was excellent at her job. Attentive, friendly etc.. Thank you Jackie.
The fried chicken had a delicious corn meal seasoning the skin was crispy and the meat was so tender and juicy. The dinner plate comes with 4 very nice sizes of chicken, mashed potatoes and asparagus or vegetables of the day. The gravy comes in a little cup and it's a biscuit gravy. We also split a salad and it was very good. Overall dining experience was delightful.👍

Walked away when we saw that the hostess was not wearing a mask. Asked her if servers and staff would be wearing masks. Her attitude was poor and she told us that no.one will be wearing a mask. Absolutely intolerable that this business will not wear masks. They are risking the health of their community. We reported them to public health and are encouraging everyone we know not to go to the restaurant!

We wanted to like this place, and were excited to stay there. We've been coming to Murphys for years and love the town. Always admired the idea of the Murphys hotel, but staying there this past weekend burst our optimistic bubble. The staff is friendly, for sure. But we got an historic room, and it was... just sad. Small, okay. But how about refinishing the worn floors, adding a comfortable chair or two? And the bed... if you're over 5'8", you're out of luck. But the most unsettling aspect? NOBODY on the hotel staff was wearing a mask. This, was the day after the statewide order went into effect. Sorry, you may think it's your choice, but as a hotelier, you have a responsibility to your guests. Our first and last stay.

I’ve spent a pretty fair amount of time in hotels in this area, since I’m from LA looking to relocate to Sac area due to work, so when house hunting I usually stay in hotels - sometimes with my family and our nanny - sometimes by myself.
The hotel is ok but nothing special and definitely not worth the price.
My room was not properly cleaned and the restaurant is so-so.
I definitely recommend to rather stay at a cheaper nice place and rather spend money exploring the area and local restaurants etc.
Also the management is very stuck up and rude when confronted with issues.
I’d rather stay at motel 6 and spend my money on good restaurants than visit this place again

We stayed in the "new" section, ground floor room facing parking area. The walls have no insulation whatsoever. We heard every word the people in the room next to us were saying and the headboard of our bed is on the same wall as their TV. At 12:30 at night we couldn't take it anymore, called the front desk, no answer so ended up gong next door and pounding on their door to turn down the TV, which, thankfully they did. The ground floor rooms also have lots of noise from folks coming and going from the bar and the parking lot.
No one was at the outdoor bar area as it was freezing cold, I can't imagine the noise if the weather was nice.
We visit Murphy's periodically as we're in a wine club there, but will not be staying on this property again.

It is unfortunate when an otherwise decent place is marred by a single person. In this case, that person is Hotel owner Kevin. It’s not clear what has caused his attitude problem - but he definitely has one. These may sound like minor examples, but why should anyone put up with them when there are so many choices?

Example 1: A while ago our group was eating and drinking in the Hotel bar. My wife asked for a Moscow Mule, and then she asked if they had it in a copper cup. The sarcastic reply was “Oh, you are one of THOSE people!” Trust me: it wasn’t a joke. I guess we are one of THOSE people - I’ll let you imagine what that means. Needless to say, ruined the experience.

Example 2: Eating recently outside on their patio, it was a cool day and we asked if the sunshade could be lifted. The server asked Kevin to come over and he starts by exclaiming in our earshot, “Why don’t they just move over there?” Then he mopes over and starts fiddling with the shade controls. We made a few positive comments and started to cheer him on a bit, when he immediately became super rude and started making comments about how he is “not here for our entertainment”. His sarcastic and negative comments persisted for 5 more minutes as he played with the shade. Lunch ruined. If we hadn’t already ordered, I would definitely have walked out.

So if you enjoy getting abused by a cranky owner with an attitude problem, go for it. Otherwise, eat somewhere else.

P.S. - The serving staff at the Hotel is absolutely great! I feel so bad for them as I can only imagine the BS they have to put up with from Kevin.

When checking in I was promptly told by the desk clerk that the people who were in the room the night decided to stay another night, and that we were moved to another hotel building that we did not want to be in.

When we told her that, she went for the manager who had another story about the plumbing in the bathroom not working. That was a lie, because other guests stayed in the room that night.

Service was poor, attitude was poor, could not get the food prepared how it was requested.

My wife an I at at the restaurant May 16th around noon, we ordered a BLT with Avacado with crispy bacon, wacon was not even fully cooked. I ordered a club sandwich with crispy bacon and avacado, and crispy fries, the first time the fries were not crispy and they were cold, the sandwich did not have avacado as ordered. the waitress then brought out hot french fries but they were not even close to being crisp, you pick one up and it as limp as spaghetti. the waitress also brought out a chunk of avacodo, i had to cut it up and put it on my sandwich. when i told the waitress the french fries were hot but not crispy, she seemed to care less.

Are you still in touch with Gordon Ramsey?
Answer from TiamoItalia
Vallejo, California121 contributions43 helpful votes
That I do not know. I do know that they did not take all of his advice. Ramsey wanted them to not rent the rooms over the bar and they are some of my favorites in the place. If you book them expect noise until the bar shuts down. They also didn't take all of his menu advise. He did this place some good... That said, I really like this property.

I would recommend renting a car. San Francisco, Oakland and Sacramento airports are hours away from Murphys.
