This Westin is in the perfect location for visiting Stanford and down town Palo Alto. The rooms are very nice as is the staff. One thing that isn't so delightful is the maze of which you must go through to find your room and the lack of elevators as well as difficulty finding elevators if your room is deep within the maze. The gym has a lot to be desired but there are plenty of walking paths around town so you can avoid the gym
Recently spent two nights at the property for a wedding. Check-in was efficient and our room had a nice layout with a seating area and coffee table. The bathroom, while somewhat dated, offered a tub and shower. The highlight was a few hours by the pool.
Pros - cost and location - big rooms with a smart layout - pool - clean
Cons - parts of the property feel dated - service at the pool was slow and inaccurate - some rooms are far from the desk
Tips - request a room close to the main building and thank me for saving you seven mins of walking time
I just stayed overnight during a conference on the Stanford University campus. The building and public spaces are not as high end as some Westin properties, but comparable to many of the small hotels tucked into the streets of Palo Alto. It has convenient self-parking beneath the hotel ($20/night) with direct access to the lobby. As is typical for Westin, the staff go the extra mile in service especially for SPG members. The front desk staff who were not busy came out from behind the desk to point out the amenities to me. The preferred guest rooms were large, with large well appointed bathrooms too (separate shower and tub). There were ample charging ports and connectors which is to be expected in Silicon Valley. There is not much of a view from this low building right on the main road besides other buidings or the pool. I doubt that is different than any other local hotel. The beds are quite comfortable. The hotel was not busy during my stay, but I did note some noise such as voices being easily transmitted through the adjoining room doors. My only disappointment was the bar and lounge off the lobby which is quite small and dark. The staff were attentive and lovely there though. The bar menu is much more limited than the restaurant upstairs or even the room service menu. That, and the average quality of the food, were my only disappointments. There was a wine menu. My cocktail was quite good. It would be nice to have a larger gathering area. Not everybody wants to eat dinner in the restaurant too.
We enjoyed being so close to a Water Polo Tournament. Could actually have walked if we wanted to exercise and avoid parking fees. The room was in extremely good condition with an emphasis on quality sleeping. Bathroom enjoyed separate tub and shower and the shower was one with the overhead cascading water. What a treat. Staff at front desk was terrific. Depending where your room is plan on a lot of walking as the hotel is definitely spread out with a lot of turns as you walk. Breakfast buffet was super with plenty of choices. Service was actually faster for specific choice of omelets, pancakes and french toast. Self parking is $20. Valet only $5 more.
We visit the Westin in Palo Alto every couple of years. We always have a wonderful stay. The location is great. Stanford is across the street and downtown Palo Alto is around the corner. This is the first time we didn't have a car and we didn't need one. Every place we wanted to go was within walking distance.
The staff always bends over backwards to be helpful. The food at Soleil is consistently very good. The hotel is always immaculate.
If we are lucky enough to go back to Palo Alto, we will definitely stay at the Westin.

Dear Bill V,
Thank you for your question. The standard rooms at the Sheraton and Westin are both lovely. The most notable differences between the two are that the Westin standard rooms are slightly larger than the Sheraton standard rooms, all standard rooms at the Westin have a separate tub and shower, and the windows at the Westin are full length. I hope that helps in weighing your options.
