Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hotel's Favourite
There is much to do in Paso Robles and a good way to start off is with a comfortable hotel, offering good value, in a great location. I booked a king room that was very clean and comfortable. Although located right off Hwy 101, rooms are very quiet. During the time I was there, I spoke with three different receptionists and all were friendly, helpful and professional. I took a mid-week solo trip to Paso and chose Black Oak as my base. It is well located to jump on Hwy 46 and travel either east or west to visit the many wine tasting offerings. It is also less than 10 minutes from the downtown square with its unique shops and restaurant variety. Margie's Diner is the restaurant on premises and Black Oak offers you $5.00 off your check or a breakfast 'grab and go' bag till 10:a.m.(obtained at reception) if you need to get on the road. There is also a clean and inviting pool, as well as a spa (hot tub). You will find a large covered patio for those who need the shade, as well as the sunny patio. Pool area has ample patio furniture, matching and good condition. This is an excellent motel location for anyone attending the performances at the Event Center as you can literally walk across the street and you're there. No need to get involved with traffic and parking.

It's nice to see classic style accommodations still thriving. Check in was easy; the clerk friendly and informative. We had a spacious room with two queen beds and plenty of helpful extras: 'fridge, microwave, table and chairs. The long counter, mirror and sink vanity area is a welcome addition. The separate toilet/shower room also had a sink. The pool looks very nice and the plantings around the property add to the ambiance. They offered a "grab and go" sack breakfast but we opted for the $5 coupon for use at the nearby coffee shop which we enjoyed as a relaxing start to the travel day.

The hotel property in Paso Robles has spacious rooms, clean and is well-stocked with toiletries and towels. The staff are very frinedly and courteous. After being closed for several years (during Covid) the restaurant is open. While we did not use it, other guests said is was "good." This hotel is very confortable and we stopped there to break up our trip the Bay Area for business.

We reserved 3 units for our family to stay to celebrate my mother-in-law"s 100th birthday! The location was perfect as it was very close to the birthday venue. Robin, the front desk representative was courteous and was able to group our 3 rooms close together.

We only stayed one night. Had comforters which is always nice. Quiet and they provided waters in the room. Staff was friendly. They offered $5 off at diner if we wanted to eat breakfast. Gave us a bag with a granola bar and muffin and apple instead.

This particular BW property is simply not worth $300/night including taxes. As a Diamond Select Member, I have stayed at a tremendous number of BW properties and have never found one that was worth that dollar amount. Its a $115 base room. Stayed in the exact same style room on the way to Paso and on a Saturday night for $108 in the Bay Area. Instead, the City of Paso and BW corporate allow this property...and many others...to play the "whatever the market will bear" game because of the intense tourist traffic. I would rather pay a higher daily price point that is fair & equitable rather than the insult that says on Sunday this room is worth $115 but the same room on Friday and Saturday is worth $274. Maybe if there were a personal masseuse included? Seriously. And then, of course, you have the City/County ripping off everyone with a 13% hotel penalty for spending money in Paso? It must be hard for the check-out personnel on the weekend to ask about how the guests enjoyed their stay and keep a straight face. Combine that with the absolute stupidity of gas prices in SLO and the cost of eating out...just don't see how it measures up to other areas that have more to offer than wine. At least in Atascadero just a few minutes down the road the rooms are at least $50 less at a comparable property playing the same game. Still sad

Response from Angela McKee, General Manager at Best Western Plus Black Oak
Responded 12 Oct 2023
Thank you for the review. Hotel rooms have always been supply and demand based for pricing, and being that we are a destination location Fridays and Saturdays have historically been higher. The City of Paso Robles and BW "Corporate" (we are all individually owned and operated hotels and set our own pricing) have nothing to do with how we structure our rates. We are still one of the best values in Paso Robles on a Friday and Saturday stay. While your frustrations are valid, many items that you mentioned to give our hotel and staff a low rating are not in our control. Every city has tourism occupancy taxes.

I was pleasantly surprised with my recent stay at the BW Black Oak. Front desk help was super friendly and helpful. Room was immaculate, quiet and bed was comfortable. A/c worked great. In addition to the mini fridge there was a microwave and a lighted make-up mirror (unexpected). Bath towels were soft and fluffy. I would definitely stay here again on future trip to Paso Robles.
