Lawrence Olivier and Vivian Leigh exchanged midnight wedding vows on the grounds, and Camelot began here with John and Jackie Kennedy honeymooning in the cottage that now bears their name.

Okay. So we needed a place to go with the kids and we called and arranged a cottage with kitchen and pool (very very pricey but actually very worth it). This place is stellar and even with limited staff serving their limited guests (six rooms occupied out of 41) they just simply get hospitality. The room was lovely and the property is immaculate. I need to return when things are open to get the whole experience. My singular complaint is that we asked for Crepe Suzettes from room service ( a normal restaurant item for them) and they said "can do"...they served cold boring pancakes with no presentation and should have simply said "sorry, we cannot" rather than disappoint. Montecito, by the way, has the best approach to virus to date...they have cafes open and serving and people are very courteous and respectful. Quite a treat.

This was our third visit to San Ysidro Ranch. This is a unique time to travel, and feeling safe and secure is so important to us. We hadn't traveled for six months outside a 20 mile radius in San Diego, and this was the perfect way to "escape" without putting ourselves at risk. With separate cottages, you don't interact with other guests at all, really, and the sense of security and privacy is priceless. We brought our dogs (our older dog's third visit!), and they were treated like family. The cottage we stayed in was roomy and lovely; we enjoyed every moment of our stay. The highlight was room service; we had only been in 2 restaurants since February and it was great having someone set a linen tablecloth in our room and bring us a lovely meal. The resort is very quiet and peaceful. The staff was outstanding. We also had dinner in the Stonehouse restaurant, and the tables were nicely spaced out and the food was excellent (and the wine!). A+. Highly recommended and worth every penny.

During our stay here we felt like we were in an enchanted fairytale where everything is beautiful and perfect, and there is no need to worry or stress because you’re in a little magical world where nothing can go wrong. So captivated were we during our three night stay that my husband never left the property, and I only did for a few walks to glance at the nearby impressive real estate.

Forty or so cottages dot the stunning and immaculately kept grounds that burst with formal and informal gardens full of roses and other beautiful plantings. We stayed in the Honeysuckle cottage which like all the others was full of charm and a nice throwback to a gentler time. The room was spacious with a vaulted beam ceiling, oak floors, Persian rugs, and a brick faced gas fireplace. The furniture and paintings were antique and the canopy bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. Our bathroom was good size and also very charming with wallpaper even on the ceiling. It had double sinks, separate shower, and a large soaking tub. The outdoor terrace had two lounge chairs, a table with two chairs, and a small hot tub plus outdoor shower. The view was private and wooded with a peek of the ocean.

We thoroughly enjoyed the meal package at Stonehouse with every single of our eight meals enjoyable and delicious, especially the Steak Diane. The bread products were also superb and the staff almost always remembered our names. The ambiance at the restaurant was also outstanding. Rustic and charming on the inside but we preferred to enjoy our meals on the two outdoor terraces. The upper one is covered and has flowers all around the edges and a view of the ocean. The lower terrace is open and in the middle of a tree planted and hedged garden. Both have fireplaces.

The pool is near the top of the property in a secluded spot surrounded by comfortable loungers. The gym overlooks the pool and was the only disappointment during our stay. It is just a small room with some cardio machines but no useful machines for a workout. Nearby is a small cute outdoor bar and café that looks out to the ocean. There is also a surprisingly difficult six hole miniature golf course. We did not see the spa.

The low key, low tech style of this hotel may not appeal to everyone but for us it was just perfect. This hotel is very special and unique and we greatly appreciated its natural beauty and charming style. A perfect stay.

We stayed for two nights in October, 2020, our first trip away from home during the pandemic. First, the good. Our room was lovely and quaint, well appointed, with a fireplace, a private spa, and a beautiful porch from which to view the ocean while eating breakfast. The grounds were stunning and well maintained. Our dinner at the Stonehouse, while not remarkable, was still a welcome respite from endless Door Dash meals.

The not-so-good: our shower didn’t work. First, no hot water; then, the water would not shut off and so ran continuously. The first worker couldn’t fix it. The second worker thought he fixed it but, shortly after he left our room, the hot water shut off again. We finally gave up, used the outdoor shower and left for the day. The shower was eventually fixed while we were away. The hotel offered us a small restaurant credit as compensation for our trouble.

Next, we stopped by the front desk and asked that housekeeping skip our room, as we were trying to minimize our exposure to others. After we were assured repeatedly that our request would be honored, we later received a phone call informing us that our room had been cleaned anyway. No apology was offered.

A few minor things: We called down for ice but it only arrived after we waited 20 minutes and called a second time. Once we were seated at the Stonehouse for dinner, we sat for 15 minutes without being waited on. We finally walked over to the hostess stand to ask for a waiter.

For $2,200 a night, we expected more. At the very least, we would have expected someone from hotel management to call us to apologize for the shower and the mix up with housekeeping. At one point, while the shower was loudly splashing cold water and we were running out of time to get dressed, we called the front desk and asked to speak to management but were told that they were all in a meeting and couldn’t be disturbed.

This was our first trip to the Santa Barbara area; we’ll try other accommodations next time.

We enjoyed our recent stay here, with the grounds being beautiful to walk around and the staff quite friendly. Like another review, we also heard construction noise regularly and loud radios of staff members through the day. We enjoyed the restaurant for breakfast and dinner, although our server for dinner was more interested in chatting with the table behind us (who was also vaping when the server wasn’t around). The room could use an upgrade, especially with soft close toilet lids and cleaning the shower heads for better flow. We were disappointed with service for our room: the door to the outside (front and back) was left open on multiple occasions after service was there, during turn down our personal hangers set on the bed were taken, and we requested turn down with the lighter blanket that we set out which was put away and the heavy comforter was put on (even one situation where we changed it before going to dinner, and the room staff changed it back to the comforter while we were away). Overall it was pleasant, but not as relaxing as we had hoped.

This is, in many ways, a five star resort. The grounds are stunning with lush gardens, charming architecture, and lots of fun little diversions—a putting green, lawn games, paths and hikes to explore. Our cottage was peaceful and well appointed with a very private patio that had its own spa and outdoor shower. The staff was friendly and polite.

So where does SYR fall down?
* The food is expensive and disappointing. Because of covid, we stuck to room service, and while breakfast was filling if not brilliant, other dishes were actually inedible. I'm not talking about complex food, but simple dishes any hotel should be able to manage. You pay a 20% surcharge on already expensive food, plus an additional $7 charge, so you should be able to get a decent caesar salad or burger.
* While the staff was friendly, they were either distracted or overwhelmed. Any request (for ice, for a refill of the mini bar, for a parking pass) had to be made twice, sometimes three times.
* There is construction happening directly across from the resort and the noise interrupts the peace of the place. (Please also note that if you're in a "creekside" cottage, you can't actually see the creek.)

These are all relatively minor complaints but they become much larger when you consider the price of the hotel and its ranking among top hotels. I recently stayed at Amangiri in Utah and at Foxhill in the Cotswolds. Their prices are similar to SYR but they deliver in a much bigger way. The food at both places is excellent and it's included in their high room rate, along with a much more generous snack and beverage service. You feel taken care of and pampered without a sense of formality. SYR is not keeping up.

Because of its beautiful setting, I would certainly consider returning, but I expect more from a luxury hotel.

We came here just as Covid was entering the thoughts of people across the nation. My wife was pregnant at the time due just a couple months later and we wanted to get one last great California trip in before hunkering down with our newborn. Little did we realize this would be our last trip for some time. We're so glad we came here for this.

The great service started from the moment I called to reserve. This was our first time and the agent did a great job of helping me pick the perfect cottage. We chose a specific creekside one bedroom and it was a great choice.

Our cottage had a spacious indoor living room with amazing fireplace and an equally great outdoor space to enjoy during the day. The bathroom was beautifully decorated, large and well appointed.

During our stay we enjoyed an amazing meal at Stonehouse outdoors. Even with it being a bit chilly out in February, the outdoor heating lamps kept us feeling warm. We also dined at Plow and Angel another night. The food here was great as well, but it's a bummer there is no reservations. Next time perhaps we can put our name down and just go hang out in the cottage while we wait. Service at both was good, but next time we'd probably stick to just going to Stonehouse.

We enjoyed room service many times and it came promptly, correctly and at a great temperature every time. It's always a favorite of ours to have breakfast in our room and they do it great here.

Overall service across the property is great. The property is well maintained and every employee we spoke to was friendly and willing to help us quickly.

We can't wait to come back and really like that the property is family friendly as well, so we can bring our son with us next time.

Let me say San Ysidro Ranch is among our most beloved hotels, and we wept when it was threatened by fire and, later, so heavily damaged by mudflows... and our stay was very nice this time, too, though we were placed in an ocean view cottage called Tulip, adjacent to the dining patio behind the historic cottage below the reception building and attached, I think, to the next suite with a very festive bridal party enjoying several hours of hair dryers, laughter, chatter and champagne as they readied for their wedding. They were happy sounds, but... for $2500/nt I would have expected a creekside cottage or the like and a lot more privacy than a jacuzzi literally a fence away from diners. I eventually went up to the lobby— gorgeous with such a cozy library nook— to read. Service at the pool was attentive sometimes, others not. Dinner on the patio at Stonehouse was nice— pretty environment of course, acceptable food— but the accommodation prices are so steep that I think we might consider booking elsewhere if the lower cottages are all that are available. We are securely in the Top 1% but these accommodation rates are still a reach and, while we have always enjoyed our stays here, we might just stop for dinner and walk through to enjoy the gardens.

OVERRATED seems like the perfect word to describe this absolutely gorgeous property that fails on literally every other level.

The property looks spectacular but for $4000/night it’s almost as if they don’t understand that service and “the details” will ultimately determine its value to those of us who only want the best and don’t really care about the price. Anything and everything you ask for is a chore for them to provide. Even simple things like coffee in your room is too complicated for them with basic items continuously missing despite asking for them. Housekeeping comes in when they please regardless whether you have a sign on your door asking for privacy or not. Breakfast means continuously asking for items over and over again and brunch is basically a lesser breakfast at a much higher cost. It is unfathomable to me at $4000/night how difficult it was to get coffee, juice, butter, etc. I’m literally talking 3-4 times asking for each item and in an area with almost no guests at tables.

I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it but apparently the owner is the Beanie Baby founder, Ty Warner who also owns the Four Seasons in NYC and Santa Barbara which are both in a nasty dispute with Four Seasons and remain unopened since Covid. Is he purposely trying to run this property down too? Seems unlikely but they now are offering complimentary meals to lure people in. I assure you all the meals they give you and it’s still not worth it.

All in all a very underwhelming experience that leaves you feeling ripped off. Hopefully they will train their staff better and maybe take lessons from Twin Farms or Blackberry Farm so they can understand how to run this properly. Unfortunately probably the worst part is that I don’t think they really care and this is what it is. Be smart and save your money and go somewhere else. If you decide otherwise don’t say I didn’t warn you.

A bright line test of a hotel is how problems with accommodations are handled by management. For a five night stay two of us checked into a cottage that the following morning proved to have a defective shower. The water temperature would oscillate between cold and dangerously hot. We told reception on the first morning on way to the outstanding breakfast and a repair was promised for that first day. The repair did not materialize and the following morning we had the same problem. Again we advised reception. Later that second afternoon (when we were later hosting an eight person dinner party) we were told by telephone while away from the property that we would be relocated to another (larger) cottage as the repair would take longer than expected and that our possessions would be relocated. Returning to the hotel we found that our possessions had not been relocated and we would have to repack our bags ourselves (in the midst of moving the assisting bellman disappeared for 20 minutes and returned only after a call to reception.) Eventually we relocated and arrived at the restaurant just as our guests were arriving. The food was outstanding and the hospitality and service at high standards as all others report. We did run into a problem of getting the jacuzzi temperature adjusted to our liking, which required several calls to engineering as (presumably for safety reasons) the temperature is not adjustable by guests. We believe that the shower problem could have been, and should have been, fixed (or we relocated) on the first day and without so much angst on our part - hence four, not five, stars.

As most rooms and cottages have water features, the Ranch is not the best choice to get away to with small children. We went a little further north to Santa Barbara for a more family friendly resort/hotel.
