We are just back from our second visit to the Grey Goose and have to say how wonderful it was yet again. Both times we have been have been mid-December (wedding anniversary) and you’d expect the hut to be cold but the electric heaters do a wonderful job of keeping it warm and it’s lovely to light up the stove and wrap up in blankets with a good book. The hut itself has everything you need for a weekend away and the water pressure and temperature are very impressive so no need to worry about not being able to shower properly. There are spare blankets in the drawers and pillows of a variety of thicknesses and firmnesses to make yourselves as comfortable as possible. The hot tub is lovely to relax in after a day exploring the local area. From the tub all you can see are fields and sheep, it feels like you’re a million miles away. It’s almost entirely silent too and it’s just heavenly to sit there in the dark with nothing to see and hear except the occasional hoot from an owl. Sarah and Charlie are wonderful hosts and they greet you with a smile if ever you pass. Nothing is too much trouble. Henry (the cat) does a great job of showing you the way to the hut.…
We stayed here on Tuesday for two nights and truthfully, it wasn’t long enough. We stumbled upon this little treasure on the Canopy and Stars website and fell in love with its quaintness and price….. and on arrival, it certainly did not disappoint. Plenty of space for parking, we were warmly greeted by owners Sarah and Charlie, who showed us to the Grey Goose shepherds hut. From the moment I saw it, I fell in love with it, every little detail was perfect and very well thought out, there really wasn’t anything missing. Immaculately clean, the hut had all the basics….and more. We thought we would get the wood burning hot tub going before anything else, as we were aware that this could take up to 90 mins to get to the temperature we wanted, it also requires a little attention during this time such as putting more logs in and using the paddle provided to equalise the water temperature….. this really wasn’t a problem with us especially with a large glass of wine in hand! One little thing that might of been essential would of been a small fishing net to hook out the bugs and bits that float in to the hot tub, by day two there was a few but nothing to get them out with , but again no biggie, and certainly didn’t have an impact on our stay. Once mastered, it was wonderful…… sitting there with a view of the Cats back and the sun going down, with nothing but the sound of the birds and the sheep, was complete tranquility at its best! The thing I really liked about this place is the animals, the sheep are right outside your gated area and we loved feeding and stroking them, and after checking with Sarah, she was more than pleased for us to feed her chickens with our leftover burger buns! The real star of the animal show for me was Henry the cat, he visited us many times, and being a massive cat lover, this certainly wasn’t a problem for me! The grounds are immaculate, we liked the fact that the pathways was either bark chips or slate, leaving the surrounding areas rural like a countryside wild garden, so the hut and its grounds perfectly blended in with nature, instead of fighting against it. We had a canopy outside which was absolutely perfect for us to eat dinner under or just sit and watch the wildlife, with it being extremely hot, it was a much needed addition to it. The hut is very private and secluded which meant we weren’t overlooked at all, and it’s peaceful setting contributed towards a very good nights sleep. There’s nothing better than to wake up first thing, open the stable door and see the sheep whilst drinking coffee in bed. Everything is pretty much provided, cutlery, crockery, pans, utensils, condiments (including balsamic vinegar…..nice touch), tea, coffee, sugar….. the only things that wasn’t was a tea towel and a washing up sponge but we headed to a shop which is around 15 mins drive (think it was called Oakchurch) and picked one up there…… amongst other things, so this really wasn’t a problem. This really is the ideal base to explore many things in this area, the hikes are supposed to be amazing but sadly we ran out of time, but we did do a half day canoe trip down the river wye which was around 50 mins drive away, and would highly recommend that. Thank you Sarah for the beautiful homemade chocolate cake on arrival ( again, small touches like this stand out from the crowd), and thank you Charlie for all your knowledge and stories, you are wonderful hosts who couldn’t do enough for us, and it was a real honour to be able to stay on your beautiful acres of land. This was my very first time in Herefordshire and certainly won’t be my last as it really is a beautiful part of the country, and would I stay here when I next visit? Hell YES! Without a doubt. And after handing in our keys back to Sarah to say goodbye, I felt somewhat sad to leave…… so know for sure we will go back because a little piece of my heart is left there. …
Found The Greedy Gander a Shepherds Hut (with Hot Tub) which was a must through Canopy & Stars as a surprise for my Partners Birthday…it had a separate hut for yr kitchen with a shower and WC nxt to it…..we were greeted by Sarah, the Host with homemade cake and fresh eggs! Dinner alfresco on the BBQ/Firepit (defo had marshmallows) and you help yrself to coal and a wood (first bag free) £6.00 additional….to heat yr hot tub, it rained…in July but didn’t care, it was quite the find and felt like we were the only people for miles (there is another hut which is close by but we were nicely secluded) 🙌🏻 Surrounded by animals (lamps and sheep in the field in front) cows, goats and chicken too, if you care to go find them…with a fab view of the Black Mountains
We stayed 3 nights (2-5th July) in the Greedy Gander. Not long enough. Amazing place to get away from it all and relax. Everything you need to enjoy the countryside in luxury surroundings. Stunning gardens (really appreciated by Jackie who is a garden designer), friendly lambs in the adjacent field and an abundance of wildlife. Champagne in the (brand new Scandinavian) hot tub was a real treat! Slept very well. So much to do in the local area. Would recommend the views from the top of the Cat’s Back in the Black Mountains, Hampton Court Castle Gardens and Chapters in Hay-on-Wye for a different, intimate dining experience (tasting style menu). Sarah and Charlie were wonderful, friendly and helpful hosts. Welcome home made cakes much appreciated! We will be back, Steve and Jackie.
Stayed at the site from Tuesday to Thursday. Arrived to be greeted by Sarah, very warm and welcoming and provided useful information. Hut was clean and well equipped with everything you needed. Hot tub was lovely, scenery gorgeous. Animals near by provided wonderful entertainment and made friends with a ginger Tom cat who roamed around. The only Feedback I have is that the mattress on the bed was weirdly short and left a gap at the end and it wasn’t the most comfy, we did leave early due to sleep and another commitment but this is a quick fix I’m sure if a bespoke mattress could be created to fit the bed base. Also hot tub ready on arrival would have been a bonus, it took us some time to sort out.
