We stayed at the Muddifords Court Country House for 2 nights to attend a wedding in Tiverton, some 6 miles away. We left with distinctly mixed feelings. Muddifords certainly has the potential to be a superb retreat and may turn out to be if the owners' plans bear fruit.

Muddifords is a charming building set in sumptuous landscape. It is perfect for those looking to free themselves of city stress or seeking a romantic getaway. Unfortunately it is quite difficult to find. Though this is not uncommon for the area as a whole, the owners do not help their cause by having no website. None of the locals, our fellow wedding guests or the Collumpton constabulary was familiar with Muddifords. I suspect this is a consequence of new ownership but nevertheless needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency. In the meantime I advise future guests to do their homework before they travel. Thankfully once we did locate it, driving through the imposing gates and up the long drive to the grand house reset the tone perfectly.

On booking the accommodation with late rooms, Nicky was very quick to confirm the reservation and promptly answered several questions I posed by email. Unfortunately we were delayed for several hours by the closure of the M5 and the subsequent 50 mile tailback. Though tired and late, we were delighted to be greeted by an adorable little dog that certainly did her bit to alert the owners of our presence. Sadly Pip did not share the dog's enthusiasm and before even considering the facts made a rather unwelcome comment about our lateness of arrival. Pip appeared more concerned with continuously trying to sell us breakfast even though we made it perfectly clear that it wasn't required. Thankfully Nicky was far more welcoming. Despite the late hour, she made the effort to greet us and ensured we were quickly comfortable in our room. Nicky also allowed us additional time to check out on the Sunday. However on the day Pip quickly became disgruntled, stating several times that he needed access to clean the room. Ordinarily I would understand but Muddifords check-out time of 10am is far too early. Pip's general grumpiness detracted from what was generally a pleasant stay. To his credit, however, he did allow us to examine the grounds after checking out and his children are super lovely.

We stayed in the "willow" for 2 nights, a charming family room tastefully decorated with exceptional views of the manor. The room was kept wonderfully clean and was extremely comfortable. We were disappointed to learn on arrival that our bathroom was not en-suite as requested. Having said this, the bathroom itself is superb and we were lucky enough to pretty much have sole use of it.

More worrying was the kettle which has neither a detachable base nor cord. The extremely short cord posed a significant safety threat so hot drinks were made with extreme caution. I strongly urge the owners to replace this with a more suitable model to avoid any potential health and safety issues.

Given that the new owners have only been operating for some 3 months, it was certainly a valiant effort. There were some teething problems but generally our experience was a positive one. Nicky appears to be a natural for this business but Pip's hospitality skills need honing. There appears to be a conflict between business and personal matters and as a consequence at times he made us feel second rate.

In short, Muddifords is a fantastic location and has the potential to be superb if the owners pursue their expansion plans. With the right additions Muddifords would certainly make a great wedding venue. If these expansion plans pan out I sincerely hope Nicky and Pip hire staff to ease the pressure on themselves and improve the overall experience for their guests.

We had a wonderful one night stay at this beautiful place. Everything was perfect and we really enjoyed the impeccably presented rooms and delicious breakfast. Nicky and Pip are lovely hosts and they really looked after us. Everything was just perfect! We loved the stunning furniture and the warm and welcoming rooms! We would definitely return and stay longer. Muddifords Court Country House is a real gem in the heart of a lovely area. Trudie and Jack Cawthra.

Stayed 2 nights £85 per night ok but in some respects ordinary
Scotts Porridge oats cooked in a microwave for breakfast. Tea and coffee making facilities in room uht milk and sachets of nescafe , and I didn't know that they still made those little pats of anchor butter to go with your sliced bread toast for breakfast
Nice property, room was ok, but a pot of tea on arrival would have been a nice touch
Now last week we stayed at a Country House in Axbridge, £120 a night, but that was special, and a fantastic breakfast included in the price , didn't have to pay £5 for a couple of boiled eggs!!
I guess that luxury is in the eye of the beholder

Response from Nicky L, Owner at Muddifords Court
Responded 25 Aug 2015
Thank you so much for your recent contribution - we value all feedback and take on board your comments. However, in order to give our Trip Advisor community a balanced view, I would like the opportunity just to answer some of the details of your review:- our porridge is indeed Scotts Porridge Oats but I can assure you it is prepared in the old fashioned method in a saucepan on our Aga! We do utilise UHT milk on the hospitality tray but in the guest pack in each room we make mention that fresh milk is always available - just ask. I agree, sachets of coffee may not be to everybody's taste but we do also offer a great selection of good quality breakfast and herbal teas, hot chocolate, Perrier and still water, biscuits and even a decanter of sherry! The comment of "£5 for a couple of boiled eggs" is not actually accurate. For the price we also include an unlimited choice of cereals, muesli, toast, fresh fruit, yoghurts, selection of fruit juices and hot beverages. Once again, thank you for taking the time to review. Muddifords court must have some of the best b & b rooms not only in Devon , but maybe the whole country ! The house sits in 14 acres of grounds and while some areas remain a work in progress outside the public rooms and bedrooms are absolutely stunning. You approach the house via electric gates and a long gravel drive and park next to the large duck pond. Keep an eye out for the free running hens and the owners 2 dogs !
Our room was large and full of charm and with an bathroom to die for, large shower, rolled top cast bath tub and slate floor. The best part about staying here was the total peace and quiet. I normally sleep with ear plugs in when away, not here !! And there was no need for the blinds to be closed at night . No light pollution at all. On the downside , you will need to drive at night to find an evening meal but even here there's lots of choice. The breakfast matches the rooms , simply stunning and the hosts Pip and Nicky went beyond expectations to make our stay very special.

One major problem however.....they have way under priced the rooms for what you get, book a room soon before they come to their senses....because the rooms are worth at least another £50.00 a night of anyone's money!!!!!

My partner, his sister, myself and our baby needed accommodation near Tiverton to allow us to attend a family funeral. We found Muddifords after searching on Laterooms.com. We were so glad to find such a lovely place for such reasonable rates. I can only echo the favourable comments from so many of the other reviewers. Nicky went out of her way to provide us with a mini-fridge so that we could keep our baby's medicine cool, she also ironed my trousers!! I simply asked if I could borrow an iron and she insisted on ironing them, bless her, Nicky really is the perfect host, nothing was too much trouble for her. We learnt from other guests that Muddifords is going to be featured on the TV program "Four in a bed" next week, so we very much look forward to watching that. We were very pleased to hear that Muddifords win, but aren't surprised at all. If you are looking for very clean, beautifully decorated accommodation close to Junctions 27/28 of the M5, then go for Muddifords, you won't be disappointed.

My wife and I booked here for a post-wedding stay for one night in the Luxury Suite. We were not disappointed. The room is stunningly decorated and the bathroom is enormous. Our host, Nicky, was engaging, thoughtful, courteous and generous.🥂
The house is immaculate and the grounds are kept in pristine condition. Breakfast arrived on time and there were plenty of gluten-free options.
My only complaint is that we didn’t stay for longer! We will certainly be back though 😊

I don't want anyone to book here because I want to keep it all for myself. I discovered this place by chance and it is without doubt one of my all-time favourite places. The rooms and the house and the grounds are so amazing. Beautifully decore'd. The amazing floors and antique furniture are stunning. The staff and owners are the nicest people ever, with exactly the right mix of welcoming but giving you your privacy. Beautiful food too. I would seriously struggle to find any fault with this place.
Please don't tell too many people about this...I always want to be able to book in here!

We had 2 rooms booked for 2 nights at the Pitfield House cottages, not the main hotel. We requested early check-in but arrived even earlier than we expected at 10am but our host (and hostess) were more than welcoming and made sure this wasn't a problem. It's extremely rare to be able to check in this early and we were most grateful. the cottages are a 5minute drive away from the hotel down quaint country lanes. As soon as we got into the rooms we were amazed, they are surprisingly spacious with fantastic decor and very well stocked. We had a fridge full of soft drinks, milk and yogurts and a generous full continental breakfast is supplied. The bathrooms were more than adequate and again, very well stocked. The best part of the whole experience was the warm welcome from the hosts who go out of their way to ensure your stay is perfect!!!

No restaurant but Pip and Nicky are more than happy to recommend places fairly near by. We ate in s gastro style country pub when we stayed last August and in March we ate in a bistro called Frou Frou in nearby Tiverton. Pip and Nicky offer the most amazing breakfasts. We had Kedgeree and devilled kidneys, so its well worth waiting for. I kind of wished I had kept this place to myself, as want it to be free next time we want to stay. We just loved it so much.
