We decided to have a mini break to Cornwall and The Plume of Feathers was our chosen hotel based on positive reviews.
The rooms are stunning and thoughtfully planned.
We had two rooms, number 10 and 16.
My daughter and I shared number 10 whilst my husband and our son shared number 16.
Number 16 seemed more recent and updated.
We had an issue with our bathroom window, it’s not frosted and the shutters do not cover the entire window. We know for sure that you can visually be seen getting out of the shower from the overlooking bridge so this made us in number 10 feel very conscious. We put towels up against the windows to protect our modesty (see photos).
The bathroom having no door is not great if you’re sharing with your child.
The room was unbearably hot and because we were at ground level (number 10), we did not feel safe having the windows open. Air conditioning is definitely needed.
Our room was a little dirty in places, my pillow was stained (which my 8 year old noticed!) and there was a number of cobwebs particularly on the lamps.
Room number 16 was definitely the better of the two and quieter.
Noise from above us was quite loud particularly when bikers parked their bikes on the bridge leading up to their door.
I don’t like to moan, but I think these are things that could easily be remedied.
We were comfortable which was the main thing and the buildings are very quaint and modern.
We had breakfast included in our room rate which was good and offered a variety of options.
We ate at the restaurant two evenings and again the food was nice, although stock levels of bottled lagers/beers was low despite the menu advertising a good variety.
The restaurant I think is quite pricy.
The location of the Plume of Feathers is good, you can drive easily to Newquay or St Austell, we even drove to Lands End which took just over an hour.
Definitely a lovely little place, just a few tweaks would make it perfect!

We’re young at heart forty somethings who like good accommodation and food and got exactly that. We’ve not got refined tastes, but would have felt well served if we had!

Lovely stone built outbuildings with large floor plans, modern styling, excellent wet room style bathroom with piping hot water. Great TV and plenty of sockets for your tech.

It’s location straight off the A30 is brilliant for exploring Cornwall while also giving you a peaceful base away from the main busy hubs. We went in summer, but it would be a good year round.

Food was excellent at breakfast and dinner, a good range of local choice but not too many items to lose control of quality. The only slight quibble is that we paid for bed and breakfast up front which worked out at £15 per head each day and based on the menu we would never have spent that much had we just paid daily.

Dinner was also really well prepared with a great range of choice. If you are travelling at busy times, take them seriously about booking as it is a popular pub on its own right.

Our only other suggestion was to have some small shelves put in around the lovely wash basin for toiletries etc. as it is a bit tricky.

Staff were positive and friendly, even with the stresses of the pandemic having an impact. We appreciated their kindness and attentiveness.

We look forward to a return visit in future.

Wife and I plus our flat coat receiver stayed there for 3 nights late in 2019. We had a luxury room which was a good size with a large bed and also a reasonable sized shower room area. We eat there for breakfast and dinner each day being allowed to take the dog into the pub area which was fine. All the staff were helpful and friendly, the food was fine but I would prefer a few specials rather than the same menu each day. The dog was made most welcome. The location is great for exploring all parts of this beautiful county. The three of us will return in February for another 3 for 2 offer which makes it affordable

I can’t get over how good the Plume of Feathers is. Sure it’s a little out of the way if you’re in Newquay or Truro but it’s worth a trip for the food and the rooms are terrific. Lovely staff too.
The Plume is basically a pub/restaurant with rooms but don’t let that put you off. The rooms, which are in cottages out the back of the pub, are beautifully equipped, furnished and decorated and the bathrooms are as good as any I’ve used in a hotel in Europe. Only the bathrooms in 5star hotels in Asia are better but praise doesn’t come higher than that.
In terms of extras - free high speed Wi-fi and electric car charging points.
The food is top quality pub food - a little pricey but worth the money in quality and presentation.
Trust me this place is a gem and I hope to return.

When friends suggested meeting up for lunch (we hadn't seen them for the last few months), I was not that keen on going out to the the pub now the restrictions have been eased.

I needn't have worried as the Plume really pulled out all the stops to make me and everyone else feel safe.

When we arrived there was hand sanitiser for us to use at the entrance, and staff all kept their distance.

They had a one way system going in and out of the restaurant and pub, and table service only for drinks as well as food.

All the tables were well spaced and the staff cleaned down tables, surfaces and door handles regularly even if the tables weren't being used; and the whole place was well ventilated with doors and windows open.

There were quite a few people having lunch and who can blame them because the food was absolutely delicious - we had the Sunday roast - yummy! and the St Clements cheesecake with lemon curd ice cream was scrumptious!!

Domi and all the staff were lovely and so reassuring in these strange times - I certainly felt very safe and will be returning very soon!

Situated close to the A30 in the small village of Mitchell The plume of feathers is a gem of a find.
pub ,conservatory and beautiful tastefully decorated Cornish stone style cottages provide your accommodation making it slightly different to a normal hotel.
rooms are dotted around the well maintained gardens consisting of windy paths and bridges giving it a different look than just steps .
plenty of parking and electric charging points are available .
we stayed in room 11 luxury double and it certainly was beautiful decorated to a high speck with no expense spared right down to the little touches .a massive emperor bed with Egyptian cotton bedding, quality toiletries, huge white fluffy bath sheets rain shower and bath ..
I'm no snob but we like quality and that's exactly what we got.
refreshments in room even included a cafetiere with ground coffee .
we enjoyed coming back from a days travel around the beautiful Cornwall and sitting out to have a relaxing drink and read in the grounds before returning to room to get ready for evening meal . Breakfast and evening menu are amazing quality cooked to perfection...my all time fav ,sticky toffee pud and Mitchel mess...
if I could change 1 thing it would be to put more comfy chairs in conservatory as these old bones like a bit of comfort..
we stayed 5 nights and had an excellent stay, Cornwall and the plume of feathers you have won my heart, so much so we have booked for nxt year..
also excellent covid measure of a 5 pound voucher for use in the bar or restaurant for everyday you decline room service just hang your do not disturb sign up .
See you all nxt year ..

I was recommended this place to stay at whilst working recently in Newquay by some colleagues. I had previously stayed in a hotel in Newquay that will remain nameless, but it should have been called Fawlty Towers as the bathroom decor was probably from the same era.

So I was so happy when I arrived at the Plume to find the accomodation was not only amazing, but it was so unique in its location and setup. They all seem like like private villas that used to be farm building in previous lifetime. The attention to detail and landscaping was stunning.

My room was No.5, a deluxe double I believe weighing in at £126 a night (without any breakfast, which is £15).

The room was immaculate, and big. The decor was very well done, modern and different to the normal hotel. The bed was big and comfortable with super crisp linen that smelt super fresh, the duvet was nicely weighted but not too hot.

The bathroom was enormous, a big open plan affair with annexes, one containing a walk in rainfall shower (and it had a standard one for those with long hair). The sink and mirror was seperate in the room, the freestanding bath looked very appealing and the toilet was in a big room off the bathroom with a privacy door.

Plenty of parking with electric points for Tesla and other electric models.

Really enjoyed my 2 nights here, so quiet and luxurios. My one gripe is that the door to enter the property is 90% glass with a blind, so there was a lot of light pollution from the outside lighting during the night and when dawn arrived. Maybe as a suggestion change these blinds for blackout model to stop the light coming in.

Included some pictures below.

We stayed here for a weekend away,
It was a great experience. The bed was extremely big and comfy - had a great sleep.
It is a very dog friendly place, which is great.

The staff was really nice and friendly, especially Dominica who has been very helpful with all our arrangements.

What I liked about the hotel most though was the effort they are making on sustainability.
For example, if you don’t ask your towels to be changed and put a do not disturb sign, they would give you a £5 voucher to spend, I think this shows they are making a conscious effort. I also noticed lots of recyclable material being used (or recycled). So, well done for all their efforts.

Overall - absolutely recommend it.

Thanks for the lovely stay!

Can’t fault this hotel on a single thing.
Fabulous room with super king bed and rainfall shower. Luxury toiletries produced in Cornwall.
Love the offer of a £5 voucher for the bar/ restaurant if you hang a do not disturb sign on the door, meaning no clean or towel change required. Very innovative & a win/win for all concerned.
Restaurant very good & breakfast has a good choice offering.
All the staff are so friendly & helpful. Have to mention Esther in the bar & her amazing local knowledge. She gave us so many suggestions of places to visit.
We felt like friends by the time we left.
Hope to return one day.

We wanted a central location in Cornwall and the Plume was perfect for us.
Plenty of free parking and a very warm welcome from reception. We had one of the many dog friendly rooms (No 2) which is next to the kitchen and stores which slightly compromised your privacy particularly if the room light was on and the curtains weren’t drawn. The staff did take their breaks outside the room but were quiet. The room was excellent with a small seating area, a huge comfortable bed and a fantastic bathroom with super shower, just our taste. Large TV and a kettle was welcome. A dog bed and bowl is also provided.
Evening meals and the full Cornish breakfast was excellent. I did have the very tasty duck burger off the specials menu on the first night with the best sweet potato fries ever however the burger was tiny and a price tag of £18 was too steep. When mentioned this was acknowledged and compensated for without question so well done.
I’m a real ale drinker and was pleased to see 4 well kept beers albeit I would liked to have seen either a dark or lighter hoppy beer to give a cross section of the great beers Cornwall has to offer.
Apart from the room decor my other highlight without question were the staff. I had a few small requests with different team members over the 2 night stay and each time the answer was “not a problem” what a refreshing change.
I would be interested to know if the same quality refurbishing is planned to take place in the pub: restaurant.
Well done to all involved in this business and keep up the excellent service.

Dogs are allowed in some rooms but not all. In pubic areas dogs are allowed in the bar area where there are tables for dining but not allowed in the restaurant with the same menu in both areas.

I'm pretty sure there is a bus from a few meters away from the hotel to Newquay and Truro. It's a nice place to dry but without a car, you'd realistically be better off somewhere like Padstow or Truro.
