Welcommed by wagging tails and chuckie chucks. Ian made us welcome to his family run bed and breakfast. We stopped for here 3 days Ideal setting if you are walking the area or just exploring Glren Esk. House was warm and snug. A haven for a weiry traveller. Oddles of hot water on tap to soothe aching limbs. Our bed encouraged a full nights sleep and the dark skies offered a chance to star gaze. Our full moon put pay to our gazing but there will be future visits Breakfast was ideal to sustain us through to our evening meal. Chatting with fellow guests was entertaining and informative. We walked to The Queens Well enjoying wildlife and fresh air. Our needs were simple and this accommodation met them.
The House of Mark is situated in an idyllic location within the spectacular Cairngorms National Park. The views around the property are wonderful. Ian, the owner, was an excellent and interesting host. His aged dog, Lola, welcomed us in the belief that everyone goes to House of Mark just to see her. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was good and the timings for breakfast are flexible, which was a bonus. We were not rushed for check out either, although we left before 11.00 hrs in any case. A wee criticism is that issues in the room would have been nice. There was no TV either, but we were too tired to bother about that too much. The bushes alongside the drive up to the house should be cut back. I worried that my car would be scratched as it pushed aside overhanging vegetation. It wasn't, but..... Our bugbear lies with the hotel booking website. We were attending the Royal Braemar Gathering and so requested a hotel close to Braemar. The site stated that The House of Mark is 17-miles from Braemar, which technically it is as the bird flies, over three munros (mountains)! The absence of a helicopter to transfer us over the peaks meant that we, and all the other residents of House of Mark that night, had to drive two hours each way to attend the games. We had to do so again to visit Balmoral Castle and the village of Ballater. Despite the fabulous views we found that drive tiresome.…
One of the best accommodations we've ever been in. Ian the owner of the house is exceptional. There is not enough praise that can justify this person. Travelling with a 13 year old needs planning way ahead and Ian helped us out from months ahead. We stayed in the comfortable cottage which was spick and span and so cosy. Ian would make sure that the fire would be lit up before arriving back in the cottage. The food was excellent and Ian was always there giving us loads of information and tips on where to go. The surrounding areas are simply beautiful….breath taking. If you are looking for a home away from home, than I would definitely suggest that you visit this place. Thank you Ian for making our holiday a memorable one, hopefully one day we will be able to visit again. Marita, Nick and Karl – Malta…
I went as part of a walking group of 12 people. We had the most enjoyable 2 days staying at this property. The surrounding scenery is amazing. We climbed to Mount Keen from here which was nearby. The owner Ian is a very friendly person with lots of local history. Hes a most obliging man who nothing was too much trouble for him. He offered to make pack lunches for us if we wanted for our climb. On our return from climbing Mount Keen we asked Ian if it would be alright to open a couple of bottles of bubbly that we'd brought with us to celebrate our achievement. He not only was happy with this but also gave us champagne flutes to drink from. To end our last night Ian asked if we would fancy a wee song to end the evening, we all had a sing along with him. Thanks for making our Munro trip so enjoyable.…
Keep going and look out for it on the right. The drive was half washed away by rain but we got to it. Not luxury but comfortable and friendly. Good home cooking ..not grand but tasty. Location location...if you want peace, country and quiet this is it. Could have larger bath towels to be even better...
