Just stayed overnight at The Crown, lovely food Evening meal and breakfast, welcoming friendly staff and owner Very busy when we arrived which was lovely to see and we were looked after immediately. Quaint and old with lots of character, Would definitely stay again.
I was told The Crown served great food. I ordered the pasta which was chicken and garlic, it was very bland and there was too much piled on the plate looked like they just sloped it on. My daughter had a pizza and it was average. Nice pub
We have just been to The Crown this evening for our dinner, myself husband and daughter and I am so disappointed. This was our first pub meal out since March and the only one we had planned during our week away, and it was a crushing disappointment. We went as it was highly recommended by our cottage hosts and the reviews looked great so we went there instead of going into Marlborough. The pub itself is lovely and they have clearly made quite an effort to manage COVID but we just hope.our experience isn't because they have gone all out Mon - Weds for the deal and then are so quiet on a Thurs there is no bother. So why am I disappointed. I ordered rib eye steak, rare, after they told me there were no ribs which is what I originally ordered. Also had a 4 year old with us and were told they would do a small portion of anything on the menu as no specific kids menu. So ordered fish and chips for daughter. Daughters fish and chips came and was enormous ... far too much for a 4 year old. My steak came and was a thin piece of beef that I immediately knew it wasn't cooked rare ... cut into it and fully cooked through. I have never in my life asked for food to go back, but as the waitress was right there, I mentioned it wasnt rare at all and she agreed on looking at it and took it back to the kitchen. The man who brought out our starters (assume owner) then came out and said the other side of the steak was rare, as if it was my fault ... but I had cut into it in 2 places and both were cooked through. Second steak came ... the same, not at all rare. At this point I am too embarrassed to send it back again. I eat it but it is not a rib eye, rather thin piece of meat and is cooked medium to well done at best. I didnt enjoy it at all and just ate it because it was there as couldn't bear to make any more fuss. We didnt stay for pudding. In the end I just wanted to get out of there, as I was so very disappointed. Evening out I had been looking forward to, just pretty awful really. So imagine my annoyance when I got home and looked at the receipt. We had been charged for a full price fish and chips (even though portion was massive it didnt have all the trimmings of a full portion) .... £14 for a meal for a 4 year old! Husband hadn't noticed. Also my meal had been charged as a sirloin steak ... which explains why not as good but it was still a very skinny bit of beef and I had ordered rib eye. To make matters even worse, we had been charged £6.80 discretionary service charge. Cheeky blighters automatically add 10% without telling you. Disgusted by how underhand this was. So food was mediocre, steak terrible (chef needs a lesson in what rare means) and really disappointed by the whole experience. I would not recommend.…
My mother-in-law, 10 year son and I visited for dinner. We ordered 2 x Scampi & chips and sausage & mash for my son. The scampi came out but they bought out fish & chips. We let them know this was wrong and they said they the chef was working on the sausage & mash and would bring it out. The sausages were for my son and we waited about 15-20 mins and no sign of the sausages. In the end we asked to cancel the sausages. About a minute later the guy behind the bar said just to let you know you ordered the fish & chips, my mother in law who order said she had not, his tone was so argumentative and completely unnecessary since they had already cancelled the sausage meal, it was like they wanted an argument. I think they were really struggling as the guy brought us the wrong bill for another table and then whilst we wee waiting for the correct bill another customer brought back a coke as her friend has wanted full sugar coke and she had been given diet. All in all the experience was awful and made so because the barman felt the need to argue about what was ordered, and there was absolutely no apology for the wait for the meal.…
We booked this last minute for us and our two dogs and we all had a wonderful time. Alan, the owner, was very pro dog and could not have made us feel more welcome. The room was comfortable, cosy and clean, which is important is this time of the Pandemic. The staff were around if we needed anything. We ate dinner in the pub once, which was just as tasty as the breakfast every morning. We highly recommend The Crown for a getaway for a few days. Hannah
