We stayed at the Hotel Excelsior two summers ago, of course with high expectations. The location is perfect, the architecture, the spacious rooms, super comfortable beds, the atmosphere in the pool, the beach, you can enjoy the boat ride that takes you to Venice; We really enjoyed it very much. The only thing they need to improve is their reception staff, you expect kindness and friendliness, you find yourself unfriendly and negative people.

Last minute switch of bookings after UK quarantine rules changed found me checking into the Venice Lido, rather than Dubrovnik as I'd been planning. The Excelsior is a resort hotel and comes with everything that you could want in one. A beach, a pool, a gym, some bars, a restaurant and large airy comfortable rooms.

Venice is easily reached by a complimentary water shuttle service that runs pretty much every 30 minutes through most of the day. Food and drinks are expensive, but top notch. Try the Blue Bar's club sandwich and the restaurant's sea food for examples, and don't miss the Aperol spritz, the best I have tasted, but beware as I've said they are expensive.

This being the Lido, you are not bombarded with a bazillion choices of where to eat and drink as you would be in Venice proper, but there are a number of cheaper, but high quality alternatives around, particlarly La Tarvenetta just across the road.

Staff were I found top notch and the view over the Adriatic with a night cap from the bar made you feel more like you were in the Caribbean than the Med. Did I say it's expensive, well it is, I hope to have the money to go back one day.

We stay at the Excelsior every summer and never regret returning. This old lady is unparalleled for luxury, elegance, location and history and over the last decade has not once let us down.

The present pandemic has created challenges for the management and staff but they have responded brilliantly and we felt far safer here than in the UK.

Unfortunately this year we lost our money and booking when a UK website we usually book through went into liquidation due to Covid-19. Mr. Paini from the management team of The Excelsior was a godsend and reinstated our booking quickly and efficiently - for which we will be eternally grateful.

Our annual stays at the Excelsior are treasured but they are always made more special by Susanna whose warm hospitality is incredible and she deserves our particular gratitude.

Thank you everyone at the Excelsior. Ci vediamo l'anno prossimo!

A big disappointment. The only 2 things of 5 star luxury about this place are the food and the price, the rest is three star maybe.

Dated room falling apart. Dirty windows glass, detached baseboard, stained and peeling bathtub wall. Radiator peeling, toilet seat worn and cracked.

Hearty breakfast but to have an omelette with mushrooms and salmon or other ingredients you have to pay an extra 12 or 14 euros.

Inattentive staff. We waited for 20 minutes on the terrace and no one bothered to say hello or ask us if we wanted to eat. After calling a waitress we had to wait another 15 minutes to get drinks.

At the beach level bar we were greeted with a: "we are closing" instead of a: "welcome gentlemen what can I bring you?". It was 17 minutes before closing and they charged us 44 euros for two Aperol spritzes and a bottle of water. A robbery.

Extremely limited menu. Tables in the little restaurant / bar and restaurant (available only in the evening) on the same terrace. Some types of dishes available only from 18.30 to 21.30. Restaurant closed at 21.30 in August in a seaside resort, practically ridiculous. Suitable place for elderly people who eat at 6.30 pm and go to bed with the chickens.

In general, little or no attention to customers and poor communication. After paying 1,647 euros for 3 nights and another 1,517 for the restaurant, we were unable to get a sunbed or deck chair to stay on the beach. All the tents occupied (according to them). They gave us a towel to lay on the sand, like commuters who take their sandwiches from home. Worthy of the zero-star pension from 30 euros per night.

We had to opt for the swimming pool but we could not choose where to put ourselves because where we wanted it was booked (after more than 3 hours the "reserved" sunbeds were still free).

The most total disappointment. Highly NOT recommended place.

We concluded that it is impossible to give this hotel 5 stars – and we cannot imagine how they are there except that it’s Italy after all. While there are many things to like, beautiful rooms, outstanding restaurant, great beach, free shuttle to mainland Venice. However, the service of the rooms is incompetent, the service staff is poorly trained, and the management simply doesn’t care. For a hotel that claims to be top – it simply is not close. What we experienced was similar to what other hotel guests told us about their experience. And a long time Venice resident shared with us that the Excelsior is famous for bad service.

Specifically,
• Arrival at hotel: We paid for a very expensive hotel boat from the airport. No one met us at the dock or helped us with our luggage and no one escorted us to our room.
• There was a big silverfish on the bed. The manager stated that it was because we left our door to the balcony open – on the 6th floor?
• The toilet paper roll almost empty. We pointed out to the manager that even in the lowest hotel (we’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels) this has never happened. She noted this but a few days later it happened again – passive aggressive behavior from the staff?
• There were very few electric plugs, and some didn’t work. If you need to charge something look elsewhere. Clearly not for businesspeople.
• We sat at the terrace at 12:20AM for a nightcap and though waiters were passing by no one made any effort to serve us. Finally, after 30 minutes I went to the bar only to be told that it was closed. Another couple staying there had the same experience.
• We opened a bottle of wine from the room refrigerator and it was undrinkable. The manager said she would replace it and not charge us (that one was true). However, neither the bottle, the glasses, the cork, or coverings were ever removed from the room – passive aggressive behavior again?
• The coffee for the machine in the room was not refreshed. When we called about this we were told that after two days you had to pay 15 Euros per day for coffee no matter how long you stayed. Our complaint to the manager was met with “it is a management decision”. Our response was it is incredibly cheap and makes the hotel look like low life money grabbers. She said she would bring it up with management.
• We stayed three nights but had only one soap. Other guests who stayed 4 nights had the same experience.
• Our shampoo and conditioner were never refreshed and were removed from the bathtub without being replaced.

OK, none of these are life threatening but just too many rough edges for a hotel that claims to be top tier.

So after booking the Excelsior and reading reviews regarding the tired rooms I was a little worried. But I was more than pleasantly surprised. Our rooms were fabulous with views over the famous Venice Lido beach. The air conditioning worked beautifully, the beds were extremely comfortable and was very clean and well presented. Yes there was an old wall hairdryer but a modern one was a available in the drawer. The only down side in the room is there is no iron and we were told that they do not supply them due to health and safety? Which I found very strange. The staff were fantastic going above and beyond. We left my elderly Mum around the pool one day as we went to San Marco for lunch and the lady from the bar looked after her, checking on her and arranging a table for lunch for her, which was great.

My only gripe regarding the pool area is that although there are steps into the pool there is no hand rail for elderly or immobile.

There are loads of options for dinner and were not disappointed a high end restaurant or a less formal option Blu Bar for snacks. The breakfast was amazing but not worth ordering from the menu as this is an additional charge.

The free shuttle to and from San Marco was regular and very handy.

We are looking forward to visiting again and exploring the Lido a little more next time as we found out there is definitely more to the lido than just a beach.

Judging the Hotel Lido Excelsior is really not easy, because it has many facets.

The location on the Lido with the beach directly in front is a dream. You rarely experience this, like the facade of the hotel in the positive sense of the word, has the charm of an old grand hotel from the last century. That alone was the reason for us to spend the night here again this time. An oasis of peace and quiet before you can set off with the free shuttle service in a very beautiful wooden boat every 30 minutes to Venice Markus Platz.

The next very remarkable is the service in the areas of shuttle service, concierge, reception, breakfast and dinner. All, but really all employees were of an ecepting courtesy and attention. Very friendly and always trying to make the guest’s stay as pleasant as possible. (Of course, there were also exceptions). Unfortunately, I have to exempt the housekeeping from this. The rooms could have been cleaned much better and the daily removal of empty plates and used glasses unfortunately had to be reminded. We are already at the point of the establishment. A double room with sea view. The carpet has stains that can probably no longer be removed. Unsightly appearance and the feeling of lack of cleanliness, apart from the fact that carpet no longer belongs in a hotel room due to lack of hygiene. The room interior would also have to be refreshed after so many years. The price is simply too high for that.

In my opinion, however, the restaurant made the biggest move. After our last stay in 2021 ( the kitchen was not worth mentioning, not to say bad), we experienced a significant increase this year. It was a pleasure to enjoy the food sitting on the beautiful terrace. Whether appetizers or main course, we preferred in both cases fish and seafood absolute freshness and excellent taste.

All in all because of the location, the friendliness of the staff and the kitchen are 4 stars for me. The rooms with the housekeeping service rather at one still 3.

The hotel is not dog friendly. They ask to pay 50 euros per night for a dog, but the dog is not allowed to do anything. He's supposed to sit in the room and that's it. The service does not say good morning to the guest. Breakfasts are not good, boring. You wait 20 minutes for coffee and tea and you have to catch the waiters because they don't come by themselves. Tents on the beach terribly expensive: 100 to 430 Euro per day. Nice pool, but service unpleasant. You have to ask for everything.
Very expensive hotel for the quality of service. Nice beach, wide, very warm water. The location of the hotel is very good - right on the beach. There are free boats to Venice that run every half hour.

This is a glorious heritage building in a fabulous setting with a long sandy beach set on the Adriatic Sea.

The hotel provides an excellent reliable Shuttle Boat service to San Marco about every half hour up until late in the evening.

The food and service in the Adriatico Restaurant is of the highest quality. The staff are completely professional at all times although at busy times they are clearly understaffed.

However, the food and service in the Blue Bar was a disaster without even the ability to cook a pizza properly. On a number of occasions two half masked Managers in business suits stood chatting throughout the evening while an excellent senior waiter with one very new apprentice tried and failed to keep up with food and wine demands.

Breakfast ran like clockwork in terms of both waiting staff and kitchen.

The background musical entertainment was of the highest quality.

For such a luxurious and expensive hotel service could be muuuuch better.

If you don't fulfill your guests' requests and can't fix problems because of being fully occupied - why don't you just take care of hiring more people during the festival to be able to take a good care of your guests who pay a lot of money for staying at your hotel just because the festival takes place there and they have no choice other than staying at your hotel?!

Now it looks to me like you take care only about your external appearance, but a hotel isn't only about all this cheap luxury, it's all about good service and satisfied guests, but with your ignorant attitude it's definitely not the place where I'd come back again.

Would never recommend it to anyone for sure.

Hi The Hotel Shuttle works from 9 am to 7 pm only. But you can call them & they can help you with the best option. There are private water taxi as well but that may turn out to be expensive. Public water taxi holds your luggage as well as it is economical as compared to the private water taxi.

This was arranged via the hotel concierge and directly with the hotel. It is for sure the way to do it - even at the quoted price . You may feel only necessary to the hotel and not for your return journey
