What a great place is Hayema Heerd! The owners, Wil and Hans, gave us a warm welcome and showed us around. We slept a night in one of their straw igloo's ('stro-iglo') which was not only built with straw but had straw beds inside also. And still there was room for a table and four chairs. The straw beds slept great! In front of the igloo is a grass field with a trampoline and swings. So when we enjoyed our glass of wine at the picknick table, our children had great fun with jumping on the trampoline. On the other side of the grass field is a complet kitchen, where you can cook of make yourself a cup of coffee, and a bathroom. Everything was very clean, which makes me always happy! Because we had to leave early to go walking on the wad, we asked for an early breakfast. That was no problem: In the kitchen a picnic basket was stocked complete with plates, glasses and cutlery and a very good breakfast! We really enjoyed it! Nearby are several lovely villages and the city of Groningen is just a 20 minute drive away. For someone living her whole live in the Randstad, it felt like being on holiday abroad! To bad we couldn't stay longer!

This is a magical place! I am so happy that we had the chance to stay here! Our 2 boys (ages 11 and 9) absolutely loved it and we originally booked for 2 nights and ended up staying for 3. We stayed in the "castle" one night then the "hayloft" on the other 2 nights. The castle sleeps 6 in 3 separate beds and is such a romantic setting it is hard to describe. The beds are so comfortable with the nicest linens. How much fun to sleep in beautiful beds draped with netting and the smell of straw! In the loft the boys chose to sleep in their own individual bed (if I remember there are 8 to choose from!) complete with hay and the cutest linens you've ever seen and they even had a little curtain that they could close and a reading light inside. There are huge stacks of hay bales to jump on in the castle and in the main loft, there is a HUGE swing from the rafters which our youngest barely got off of in 3 days! Every morning we had a lovely breakfast brought in for us right into our room. Fresh orange juice and hot coffee and tea and warm pastries and bread and cheese and ham and fresh eggs (that my boys took right out of the chicken clutch the day before!) It was all so nicely done and the attention to detail was impressive. The boys loved feeding the sheep with our host in the morning and feeding the bunnies and chickens. There is a very cool "barge" that kids can play on and pull themselves along the canal and lean into the water to try to catch the frogs as well as a "tightrope" stretched across the small canal which was fun for all of us to try (nobody fell in!). We went into the small town nearby to get food to make some dinner (there is no restaurant on site) and we cooked in the little outdoor kitchen which was well equipped to make a simple dinner. We ate outside on the picnic table and enjoyed a beautiful sunset and watched the cows and enjoyed a glass of wine while the boys played on the trampoline and the swing set. Honestly, the most relaxing, lovely, unique place we have ever stayed. We rented bikes one day from our hosts and rode through the countryside which is a must I think. Our hosts were so kind and friendly which just added to our wonderful memory of this place. If you get the chance, make a point to stay here. It was a highlight of a month long trip to Europe.
