Dumfries House Lodge was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Rothesay, Prince Charles on 4th April 2012. Sitting on the edge of 2,000 acres of the Dumfries House estate and only a few hundred metres from Dumfries House itself, Dumfries House Lodge is an exclusive country Guest House offering luxury accommodation. Built in 1750 and in use a few years prior to the completion of Dumfries House, the ‘Garden Cottage’ as it was known in the 18th century, became the Factor’s house and remained so for over 200 years. We encourage our guests to think of their stay as a home-from-home and to make good use of our facilities during their stay.

During these strange times, with new restrictions being added by the day, we wanted to get away for a night of peace and relaxation. On previous visits to the lovely grounds (great for families) of Dumfries House, we had noticed they had onsite accommodation and thought we would call to see if they were still open. Luckily they were and although the latest covid guidelines meant that the restaurant was still closed, the very helpful Helen explained that a cold platter could be brought to our room with drinks from the bar (also closed at the moment) so we booked our lodge and a private tour of Dumfries House. We arrived at 1345 and was welcomed by Colin who explained everything we needed to know about our stay. We then headed off to the main house for our 1400 appointment where we enjoyed a 90 minute private tour (it really was only the two of us with the guide). We then walked around the estate before returning to our gorgeous lodge room which was warm, cosy and extremely stylish. Our drinks and cold platter was delivered on time and it was delicious. In the morning our continental breakfast (ordered the night before) was also delivered to our door and this too was all freshly prepared. We then checked out but were able to make the most of the wonderful surroundings for another long walk and a wee treat at the cafe onsite before leaving our Royal hideaway. We will definitely return again when we will hopefully be able to take advantage of the full restaurant experience, once covid guidelines have been relaxed. This said, even under local restrictions, we managed to feel like a one night stay was a truly relaxing stay-cation and in these times that's saying something! Thanks again to the wonderful staff for all their care and attention to our needs.

The bedroom was like walking into an antique shop with all the bits of furniture squeezed into a rather cosy little room. Most surfaces had pieces of porcelain or ornaments and lots of pictures on the walls. No room for a luggage stand or a proper mirror, but quality bedding and a comfortable nights sleep. The restaurant was also a good experience, spread over two levels with white table linen, quality porcelain and the waitress had little white cotton gloves. All rather professional with quality food and a fine bottle of wine. Breakfast was a little more problematic, although they had a timed schedule for guests it looked like most had come at the same times so the few free tables had not been cleared. When we got seated it all worked smoothly and they served a very good breakfast. There is a good woodland walk with some mature planting that leads down to the visitor centre where we found the staff particularly helpful. Needless to say don't miss a tour of the house, the guides are very knowledgeable about the ancient and recent history and the exceptional contents.

Stayed here for a night ahead of visiting the house. Spent a wonderful evening walking around the grounds ahead of a really tasty dinner served in a delightful dining room. Our room was super comfortable with a king size bed, very well presented and maintained in excellent condition. There are also very well appointed reception rooms in the lodge buildings available for staying guests. Free parking is in plentiful supply right outside the lodge buildings and there is a quiet courtyard around for relaxing on a fine evening. Remember to book dinner when reserving the room; the dinner menu is very good with options for either 2 or 3 courses. An extensive breakfast menu sets you up very well for the day ahead.

My wife and I stayed just one night en rout to catch the afternoon Belfast Ferry at Cairnryan. Our welcome on arrival after a four hour drive could not have been more friendly and helpful and our lodge room was just splendid. The only breakfast available because of the pandemic was a ‘continental’ but this was served in our rooms and was more than adequate. We will certainly return plus we can’t wait to tell our friends about their jewel !n

This was our first visit to Dumfries House, staying in a property that was self catering. The house was much larger than expected, very clean and well equipped but with so much furniture, every surface and wall covered in ornaments and pictures, a little 'busy' for our taste. Quality bed linen and a very comfy bed ensured that we slept well during our stay.
Although self catering, we booked for dinner each evening prior to arrival. I think we reduced the age of the other diners by about 30 years which may explain the delicious but very small portion sizes. Half a small carrot, two tiny pieces of broccoli and two very small turnips are a garnish, not vegetables! Maybe the Chef needs to revisit portion size even if means a price increase.
The house and estate are well worth exploring, not just the areas near the house but collect a map from the visitors centre and explore the wider estate and many wonderful walks. Most staff we came across, especially in the garden, said hello or were happy to chat. They are clearly proud to be part of the Dumfries House family.
Our plan had been to visit local places of interest but we abandoned our car for the week and enjoyed all the estate had to offer.
This is an wonderful place to stay, beautiful gardens, an exceptional walled garden, children's play area with high tree houses and ropeways, various education centres, wild spaces, a farm, woodland walks and far reaching views, well done to everyone who works at Dumfries House.

My husband booked this for our 30th Wedding Anniversary. This is the most beautiful place I have stayed. Going through the front door instantly felt warm and welcoming (it reminded me of going to my grandparents house).
The rooms are spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated.
The meals were perfect - I loved the celeriac soup and the courgette and truffle soup.
The staff are beyond polite and professional.
I really can’t speak nightly enough of the Lodge, it’s stunning.
The gardens and the ‘Big’ House aren’t to be missed either - just stunning.
If I could give one criticism it’s a Labrador roaming round the house would make it even more cosy (and like my grandparents house). Just wonderful.
Thank you so much 🙂

Despite living relatively near Dumfries House, this was our first overnight stay. We were not disappointed. Our room, though small, was perfectly well equipped with en suite shower room. Bath robes were provided along with high quality Scottish toiletries. The bed was comfortable ensuring a good night’s sleep without any noise from outside.

Dinner was table d’hote style in the nearby dining room. Choice was limited but the food was well presented, cooked and served.

Likewise breakfast was delicious with hot and cold selections available.

The staff were exceptionally kind, welcoming and efficient.

The icing on the cake was an illuminating short tour of Dumfries House.

All in all exceptional value for money on this short Ayrshire staycation. Highly recommended.

A splendid return to Dumfries House Lodge, greeted as though I had never been away.
Changes in Staff since my last visit, but familiar faces still in situ. Always a delight to be recognised and welcomed with open arms, and to be able to stay in my favourite room overlooking the revamped glorious gardens that surround the courtyard.

This time having been part of the original discussions on revamping the kitchen, dinner was served in the restaurant which meant not having to go out for an evening meal as was necessary on previous visits.
The meal choice was good and the service exemplary.

After dinner was spent in one of 2 lounges talking with fellow guests whilst enjoying a beverage or 2.

Walking the 2,500 acre estate is always a joy, especially when the weather was magnificent. The walled garden was particularly good with splendid colours and magnificent blooms.

Lunch in the estate cafe is a must after walking the estate, it provides both indoor and outdoor seating with a good variety of snacks and drinks to purchase.
Many locals bring their dogs to take advantage of the lovely walks around the estate.

A visit to see Dumfries House is also to be recommended, so much history and great furniture can be seen of historical importance.

We have recently returned from a 3 night at The Lodge at Dumfries House.
We stayed in Room 14 a lovely comfortable and traditionally decorated room in keeping with the age of the property.
The bedroom and bathroom were well presented and clean with lots of hot water and soft towels.
Our room overlooked the pretty gardens which are starting to bloom with spring flowers.
During our stay we enjoyed both breakfast and dinner in The Lodge each day.
The breakfast was very pleasant and plenty of choice with both Scottish breakfast and lighter options.
At dinner there is a simple menu with a few choices each night.
All food is well cooked and presented .
Our only adverse observation is that the main courses are small in size and offer a very small portion of vegetables which we thought was disappointing.
All in all a very pleasant visit with friendly and helpful staff especially Fiona on reception and also in the dining room.
We would visit again maybe in a few years to see the development of the gardens on the estate as they are lovely.
The tour of Dumfries House was excellent and very informative but you need to book in advance as expected it is very popular with professional guides.

We had a nice welcome (luckily some other guests pointed out where to go as there were no signs) and our room was warm and welcoming.
The bathroom fittings were 'interesting' - unsure if original Thomas Crapper refurbished or very good reproductions!
I found the bed very comfortable and had a good nights sleep.
Also we welcomed the tea/coffee tray, with delicious shortbread, for early morning.
We had tea and biscuits in one of the two lounges after returning from a walk.
We took advantage of being able to have dinner on the premises as I do not think there were any alternatives anywhere near. The two members of staff in charge of the restaurant were enthusiastic and helpful.
The dinner was OK, the house wine mediocre, but our views are no doubt coloured by my husband's career.
Because of the 5* rating, and a captive market, a more imaginative approach to the menu choice would help, together with a much higher quality house wine.

Hi. I don’t think so (but please check). There are two self catering cottages adjacent to the hotel that had dogs staying when I was there and the grounds of Dumfries House are very dog friendly.

I have seen dogs during previous stays. They were I believe staying in the cottages/self catering units on site.

You can stay for one night and a lovely breakfast cooked to your requirements and served at your table. You will not get a better breakfast anywhere. If you book direct with Dumfries House Lodge there is no free cancellation however you do pay on departure. I am sure if you have to cancel and you give them reasonable notice they will be very understanding. Don't miss an opportunity to dine in the restaurant and spend time looking around the house and gardens. Peter
