First time visit to King John, but definitely not the last. We loved everything about this place. Beautiful location, great decor, ambience, professional and welcoming staff. We only had lunch, but I think the idea of small plates menu is great. High quality cooking as expected and great value for money.

We stumbled upon this pub driving through the Dorset countryside, they have decorated throughout and all looks very good. Unfortunately the menu for lunch was priced as high as possible. Expecting a nice lunch we ended up with child size portions and felt like we had been overcharged for the size of portions. It's a shame because the place is...

The idea of this small plate menu does not sit well at the King John. The portions are neither big enough to share and are too small for a starters. Could not understand at all what the idea was. We have been used to a traditional menu which has been wonderful in the past. Shall wait for this small plate...

I am sorry to learn of your disappointment with the new small plates menu now served at lunch, here at the King John. We are intending to provide the same high quality cooking as expected, whilst providing better value for money. The style and substance of my cooking has not altered, and I hope that this menu will allow a...

Had two suppers here last week... One in the middle of the storm with no power! They managed admirably where many would have failed miserably! The service both nights was impeccable ... Friendly professional and efficient... Good wine list. Excellent fresh well presented no nonsense food! This place is superb at what it does. Highly recommended !

This is a well sited pub in the centre of the AONB of Cranborne Chase. There are normally helpful and friendly Antipodean staff but the food prices have now escalated to an embarrasing level. The long term reputational damage this can do a respectable business is often under-estimated.

What a great place! Tastefully decorated (gorgeous tartan woollen curtains) and a truly warm welcome. Young staff but so pleasant and professional - we had phoned first but they really didn't mind us walking in for lunch at 2.20pm having been rather longer walking than we had planned. Evidently they cater for locals and regulars as well as visitors, all...

My wife and I went for a single night this weekend to the King John to get away from the kids! This is these condition time we have been and, once again, it was absolutely fabulous in all respects. We arrived for a late lunch on Saturday and, after a very decent pint of bitter, enjoyed a superb crab bisque,...

It was the perfect venue for a small & intimate wedding reception. Everyone at The King John Inn looked after us & our guests with such care - nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were beautifully decorated & immaculate. The food was delicious (particular thanks for the sticky toffee pudding!). It was a wonderful & happy occasion that we...

You would have to go a long way to find a gastro pub that serves better quality food that The King John. My uncle and I were doing some work locally and found this place in the good pub guide. The food was seriously good, the staff very attentive and the decor was warm and inviting. This place is certainly...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Situated in the scenic village of Tollard Royal in rural Wiltshire, The King John Inn is a Victorian and award-wining country inn offering beautiful accommodation, delicious food and a warm, friendly service. Our eight en-suite bedrooms combine modern comfort with rustic elegance and feature luxurious linen, Nespresso machines, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, direct dial phones and luxurious toiletries. Our Head Chef is an accomplished fisherman, bakes his own bread, makes his own cheese and still finds time to get up early and catch local game when in season so you can expect that every plate on the King John menu is as fresh as it can be and is expertly crafted with a passion for the local countryside. We are proud to have recently received 1 Rosette from the AA. In summer, our terraced garden is the perfect place to dine alfresco while watching the chefs in action in their Victorian-inspired outdoor kitchen. In winter, relax near our roaring-log fires in our open plan pub or in the informal restaurant. The bar provides an ever-changing selection of imported drafts and local beers as well as an extensive wine list. Salisbury and its cathedral are only a 30 minute drive away whilst the beautiful hillside town of Shaftesbury is only 20 minutes. The King John Inn also sits within a 5-minute walk of the historic Rushmore Park, an area of lawn and open woodland home to the Rushmore Golf Club. ... more   less
