Detailed Reviews
We stayed 1 night after a long day walking. I'd only contemplate staying here the one night, though. The site is a sloping field meaning 1/3 of it isn't really usable. Fabulous views and very close to Ullswater. The facilities are poor. There's 2 showers in the gents and 2 in the ladies which is paltry given the potential number of guests. There's also a 50p charge for shower use (4 minutes). The toilets are portacabin and in real need of an upgrade / more regular maintenance - especially considering the current climate. All in all - not bad but certainly more of an overnight stop location.

I’ve camped here solo in August mid week and it was quiet, not many on and was all fine. Portacabins clean. Wash up area ok but no hot water.
Didn’t use the showers.
Went back with friends over an August weekend and the negatives were that the rules they give you when you arrive just aren’t abides by. Lots of big groups. There was loads of loud music into the early hours. Fires everywhere. Loads of noise in general. So many piles of rubbish that we ended up clearing some up ourselves just so we didn’t have to look at it.
The port cabins weren’t very clean and the soap and sanitiser ran out.
The positives though. It’s basic and we were self sufficient so suites us.
Was cheap (£14 per night for my solo tent).
The views are amazing of the lake and mountains.
I only dealt with the lady owner who was very pleasant (I’ve read the reviews about the husband).
The field is sloped a lot but you can find flat spots.
The field across the road can be used for picnics and to get into the lake for swims, paddleboards kayaks or boats.
It’s 25 minute walk to pooley bridge. I recommend cutting through the waterside camp site and finding the lake path rather than going by road.
I would visit again but being wary of the other reviews.

We just returned from two nights at this campsite and I was on edge the entire time having read these reviews before going. When arriving I hoped it would be the woman but I got the man.. who as people have said, is a complete see you next Tuesday. So so rude despite us being paying customers, he drove around the campsite in the morning asking to see people’s tickets (which was a label with the day you left wrote on in marker). I said it’s in the car window on display and he said put it on your tent? Obviously this would fall off in the night due to condensation? Just appeared he was going out of his way to be unpleasant. As others have said, the site is a free for all.. on a slope, which luckily we managed to get pitched up at the top of the hill looking on to the lake. That view in a morning and at night during sunset was beautiful and the only reason for two stars instead of one.
As people said, you pay cash and it’s 50p for three minutes in the shower, which is filled with cobwebs. No hot water in women’s toilets to wash hands and when the site got busy all paper towels ran out. I loved the area so would come back but not to that campsite and would advise you avoid.

Where do I start. Terrible site. Red flag should’ve been waving like mad when they had space at the last minute on a bank holiday weekend and then when we arrived it was cash only payments with a big sign saying NO REFUNDS. At £25 per night we could have been on a better site with much better facilities and electric hook up.
It’s a sloping, muddy field where you pitch wherever you like. As the weather in the lakes can be very wet the entry to the field becomes muddy very quickly. Some of the other clients were very inconsiderate to others when pitching. We had a Motorhome park horizontally directly in front of us blocking our view of the lake and preventing us driving our campervan away from our drive away awning. A lot of people have fires so be prepared if windy for damage to your tent/awning/pop up roof on a brand new campervan. And then there are the large groups pitching 3-4 tents together with a central gazebo for them all to sit and drink while listening to loud music until late at night. Great social distancing adhered to right there.
Toilets, showers and washing up area are all up at the top of the hill. No warm water in the toilets to wash your hands, not good when Covid 19 should be fought by washing your hands with warm, soapy water while singing happy birthday, twice. The soap was thick and difficult to wash off with cold water. The showers were 50p for 3 very fast minutes. If you risk just 1 50p it will run out leaving you in the dark and cold with no running water. The washing up area did however have hot water for washing dishes so once you looked past the food mess that everyone seems to leave in the plug hole and around the sink you can wash up. All in all though the washing/showering facilities were not very clean, I felt dirtier after using them and I couldn’t wait to have a bath at home to wash it all away.
On our first full day we saw the site owner at the entrance and asked which direction we walked to the nearest village for supplies. The way he looked at us you would have thought we’d asked him to lick the mud from our shoes. He didn’t seem approachable and came across as quite rude. Reading the other reviews customer service doesn’t seem to be his strong point.
Good points - the view of the lake and also not too far to walk to Pooley Bridge. Pooley bridge has a couple of friendly shops and pubs but if you want to stay near here I would look at a different site. Other than that nothing good to say.

Had everything we needed, after check-in we were left to enjoy the trip. Plenty of space between tents, mens showers had a space for dressing in addition to showering. Great views and great location, 30 minutes to Pooley bridge, and very close to the lake. Lady cleaning the loos was also very friendly!

Room Tip:Â Bring 50ps for the shower! Pooley bridge can be busy, best to book pubs etc

It’s a field to camp in....
If you are happy to pop up a tent with no frills this is the place..... it is on a hill but there are some decent spots and the view is worth it alone!
If you’re expecting electric hook ups a club house all the mod cons then this isn’t the place there are porta-cabins for toilets which were clean I didn’t shower but a friend did and it was sufficient.
The only interaction with the owners was when we paid for our stay.
If you walk to pooley bridge you will see that waterside and parkfoot have the better plots and amenities but for back to basic camping Cross Dormont got a thumbs up
P.s we paid £28 per night for our stay it is cheaper for smaller tents

lovely campsite with a great view, the lady on the phone (Avril) is lovely, we have came here for the past 6 years as a group from school and we have never had any problems. staying in July again and cannot wait as its a great weekend with your friends, the campsite has a shower block which i believe takes coins, and the WC block is modern and clean. there isnt much else but it is great as Pooley Bridge is a 10 minute walk away. thanks again for accommodating us this year.

Considering the 1 star reviews, I thought I would give a review of my honest opinion. We have camped most years on Cross and not had many issues. We have just arrived home today after 5 nights away as a family of 4. I agree the cows, bulls, sheep are nosey (buy some ear plugs) but it is a farm after all. The view is lovely, the farmer does have strict rules around the children’s play area (especially 2 at a time on the trampoline) but wouldn’t you at £200 a go if it breaks and also the health and safety aspect. I didn’t see one guardian watching their children (that’s not me throwing any shame, I was that parent as well) you trust your kids to be good. The toilets and showers are always clean, yes the showers are very basic and dated and you can’t swing a cat in there to get changed but the waters hot so you can’t grumble.
My only off putting things are the more people who turned up in the week didn’t appreciate the tent spacing, we had been out on the water all day and came back to someone literally in our tent porch, with their guy ropes, nor did they consider we had a vehicle we needed to park and my other is even though you are camping and have paid on their site, they now charge £5 to park on the launch, I honestly would have thought this would be non-residents only considering the price per night to camp is similar to Waterside & Parkfoot.
Other than this we enjoyed our time camping (even though it rained for most of it) and will be returning next year.

Absolutely awful and worst experience of camping, dirty camp site, cold 50p showers, horrible and rude owners the wife not so bad but the man is a horrible, chauvinist unprofessional
We booked 2 nights here for £40 CASH and let’s put it this way we left before night 2. The owner wasn’t for refunding the £20 and reluctantly chucked it at me and said don’t come back I mean it with a threatening tone… when I calmly and reasonably told them what the issue was.
I wouldn’t dream of treating anyone like they did never mind my customers!!! Very bad customer service and business.
we are disgusted with this place for the stinky poo smell, terrible amenities, unkept grass, no rule enforcement and abusive owner.
Their website says they have a strict policy on being quiet after 11pm otherwise the campers will be asked to leave, well what a load of BS.
A huge family of 6 cars full of people rocked up to pitch tents at 10.45 and it was going on until 2 am me and my partner had to tell them all to be quiet until 2 am because the racket they were making was indescribable - kids screaming, car doors slamming, cars still running til, blowing up beds with electric pumps , 5 men trying to put 2 man tents up and shouting between them in their loud foreign language to eachother…
nothing was done so we had to step in and tell them all to shut up in the end ! We rang the office 3 times and could clearly see that this strict policy did NOT exist whatsoever..
then at 5 am the same families children were on the swings and see saw shouting and screaming so we got just under 2 hours sleep !!!
Don’t come here if you are a clean polite person who wants a nice trip away we’re now coming home to bed !!!
Can’t wait to visit park foot again a PROPERLY RUN SITE.

+1
Just got home after two nights here, a lovely no frills xampsite with excellent views.
We enquired a couple of days earlier and the lady was lovely, as she was when we arrived, remembering her conversation with my wife.
The site wasn't overly busy so there was plenty of space in the flatter areas. I think it could be an issue when busier.
A great little site with nice toilet and showers (remember your 50p pieces) at a great price too.
Good little play area for the kids too
No hesitation in recommending.
