Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The bathroom has black mold growing on the ceiling. The upkeep of the motel is poor. I recommend that you go elsewhere. Also, there were small bloodstained on the corner of the mattress, like they had bed bugs in the past. This can happen in any motel and they obviously had fumigated as I did not appear to have them but the mattress should have been in a bedbug proof covering and it wasn't.

Hotel's Favourite
My wife and I arrived around 4pm. We were greeted right away, and given a king bed room on the first floor, facing the parking lot. Check in and check out went great. Both desk clerks that we visited with were very nice and friendly. And the other couple of employees we ran into were equally as nice. Our room was clean, and smelled good. It’s not a huge room, but it worked for us. Bathroom and shower worked great. The shower was actually quite powerful. There is a microwave and refrigerator. Tv worked great, with plenty of channels to choose from. I did not hear much noise from surrounding rooms, or the hallway. The parking lot is large, and is well lit at night. The hotel is a stones throw away from one of the entrances to the Iowa State fairgrounds. E Grand avenue heads back towards downtown. It is a straight away easy way to head to downtown and back. You drive right by the State Capitol building. The breakfast serving area is tiny, but it works. They did have biscuits and gravy available. We had a very nice visit, and the price was quite decent. We would stay again.

Stayed here for a cat show in the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The staff were very helpful. Room clean at check in. Felt safe at all times. They followed my requests, and were great to deal with. I originally stayed there because it is close to my event, but I'll be staying there again.

This Econo Lodge is great! Wife was late getting home from another trip. We left our town(S.E.Ks.) around 3:45 pm., Tuesday, Sept. 28,2021. Heading to Wauconda, ILL. Drove to Des Moines, Ia, arriving there about 8:30 pm. Didn't know if we could just show up, and get a room. Jim, at the front desk was very helpful. Got us an overnight stay for under $100. We also got to meet Chandra. Reading reviews on their website, she is highly praised. Jim told us he is 65, and rides a bike a lot. Des Moines has has a large biking population. The room was very clean, and had everything we needed. Also had a good continental breakfast. This is a great place to stay, and employees are very helpful. We'll stop again sometime.

I realize this isn't a five-star hotel, and that's not what I was looking for. I was on a cross-country trip, and I was just looking for a clean, affordable, decent place to sleep. I would arrive late, and leave early the next morning. I didn't need a fitness center or 24-hour room service. I arrived at this hotel at about 10 p.m., without a reservation, and the staff was friendly, professional, helpful and accommodating, and my room looked very nice. It seemed like a clean, affordable, decent place to sleep. (Arrived 8/31/2021, Room 215) I can't say for a fact that my room had bedbugs since I didn't actually see any, but I woke up the next morning with dozens of itchy red bumps on my lower legs. The itching woke me up at about 4:30 a.m., with me clawing at my legs. I got into the shower and washed my legs, and that relieved some of the itching. (I don't usually travel with itch-relief cream. I will from now on.) I was still tired, but I wouldn't get back into that bed, so I tried to sleep in a chair for the next couple of hours. On a trip like this, I usually don't make reservations, since I don't have a set schedule or itinerary. I drive until I get tired, then look for a place to stay. If I'm planning to spend several days in a destination, I'll research and read the reviews before picking a hotel. Had I done that in this case, I would have seen the previous post about bedbugs. Three days later, even with lots of applications of itch-relief creams and ointments, my legs are still itching. Despite the friendly staff and affordable prices, I definitely do not recommend staying at this property. I contacted Choice Hotels management to inform them of my experience. After a few likely computer-generated emails, I was told that they could not refund my room charge (or the cost of the medications I purchased to treat the bedbug bites), but they could offer me points if I joined their customer loyalty program. I told them that I was not interested in joining their customer loyalty program (and providing them with even more personal information), as I would never be staying at one of their properties again.

Response from Econo Lodge Inn And Fairgrounds, General Manager at Econo Lodge Inn & Suites Fairgrounds

Dear 234may, We do not have rooms with one queen bed. We offer 2 full size or one king size. We would have surely taken care of you with either of these options. With out knowledge of how you booked or date of arrival, I can not check to see if a refund is forthcoming. If you care to contact me we can surely look at the situation.

Not the ritzy-est of hotels, but clean, comfortable and very pet friendly. Staff goes above and beyond. So nice!!! I was traveling with my dogs and my puppy had an accident on the bedding. They were awesome about it and told me not to worry. They even found the kong toy for my puppy mixed in with my linens and took the extra time to pull it out and save it for me at the front desk. Made the mistake of staying in West Des Moines at a Best Western Plus... trust me, Stay here instead

Hotel is across the street from the fair grounds so works out nice if you’re a vendor at one of the shows. We stayed on the top floor in a king suite. Room was “tired”. Sink didn’t drain very good, shower insert looked new but furniture was very old! Not enough staff at front desk to handle check ins in a timely fashion. Front desk had a long list of items that needed to be attended to for maintenance (no hot water in one room, air not working in another, hot tub was over flowing). Breakfast was pretty sad and again not a dedicated staff member to tend it. So all in all could be a decent hotel if managed better.

This motel had easy access off of the highways. Located by the fairgrounds, it makes it convenient if you need to be located in that area. Close to the middle town, Yet you can follow the main road east straight out of town. Inexpensive and clean.

We booked this on Hotwire. We checked in and went to our room and neither key would open the room door. After going back down to the desk the clerk advised that the room lock was on a 15 minute delay. There was a strange unpleasant smell in the hallway. The room was very dirty with a horrible stain on the carpet. Breakfast was lacking in choices and the area was dirty. Trash in the parking lot. We returned to our room after dinner and the smell of marijuana permeated the hallway. No one asked how our stay was nor did anyone say thank you. Staff was not pleasant. Take my advice and do not here.
