Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband and I stayed at Mill Glen and our son and his family stayed in Boll Cottage for two weeks in June/July and we can recommend both without reservation. The location is perfect, very picturesque and it feels quite rural, but Alva’s Main Street is just a five-minute walk away. There were even two highland cattle in the field opposite the cottages. The cottages were very clean and well appointed and the owners, the beds were comfortable too. Gemma and her husband were extremely friendly and accommodating, but we never felt monitored in any way. Although I only used it only once, there are regular buses to and from Stirling. The area is wonderful for scenery, castles and hillwalking. You can take a walk up Alva Glen into the hills and Dollar and Tillicoultry Glens are also lovely. Boll Cottages are a great base for sightseeing in Central Scotland. There are regular trains to Glasgow from Alloa (just a very short drive from Alva) and trains from Alloa connect in Stirling to Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, etc.

An absolute gem! We stayed at Boll Cottage and it was PERFECT for us. Clean and fully stocked with everything we needed. The woman running it (Gemma) was a sweetheart. She even offered to help us out when our luggage didn't arrive for 4 days. Great little town and the cottage was within walking distance to some pubs and restaurants as well as a couple grocery stores. Highly recommend for your next Scotland adventure.

We rented the lovely Boll Cottage this summer for three weeks. The cottage was absolutely outstanding in every way: spacious, comfortable, quiet, clean, with all the appliances and features you expect in a holiday cottage. Our host Gemma was delightful and helpful. Despite the weather being unseasonably warm, we still managed to experience some traditional Scottish weather, wind, rain and beautiful cloudy days. We look forward to our next trip to Scotland with great anticipation.

Since the first lockdown ended, I have stayed at Boll Cottage regularly in different seasons with my husband and dog, and latterly with friends. There is so much to see and do, within easy reach. It is very clean and comfortable with attractive contemporary furnishings, cosy in cold weather and just feels like a second home. Gemma and John always make us feel very welcome. As it is such a pleasure staying at the Boll, we will certainly return and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

We spent a long weekend here and cannot fault it at all. The accommodation is excellent..warm, comfortable and spacious. It's a great position too, allowing you easy access to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife and the South Highlands, not to mention Stirling and its amazing castle. Gemma is an excellent host, and is friendly, helpful and patient too. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.

Boll farm is convenient, short walking distance to shops; cafes, pubs and eating places. The accommodation is excellent as are the hosts. Our cottage Ben Ever was peaceful with a beautiful view. To be enjoyed, almost on your doorstep cycling, hiking and walking. Within 20 minutes by local transport history aplenty in Stirling plus their castle. Glasgow , Edinburgh and Perth are all within easy reach by car or rail. Alva has its own golf course as has Tilliecoultry 2 miles along the road. The trossachs National Park is 40 minutes away and shows Scottish scenery and culture so well. Rivers, mountains and friendly locals.
