We offer bed and breakfast in Brightwell cum Sotwell. Our home, Hope Cottage, is an 18th century cottage situated down a peaceful lane in a delightfully unspoilt Oxfordshire village. One of our rooms is a quirky Shepherds’s hut which is really comfortable with en suite shower, toilet and sink and wood burner for cooler times. Thatched cottages and country views abound. From the house there are many lovely walks taking in the Thames path, the Ridgeway and Wittenham Clumps to name just a few. The village itself is the home of the Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary and the world famous Bach Centre for herbal and flower remedies. We are within an hours drive from the Cotswolds, London, Bath, Oxford, castles, gardens, historic houses, churches - The world (or our area of the South east of England at least) is your oyster. . After a busy day exploring the area you are welcome to relax and hopefully catch a glorious sunset from our conservatory or west facing terrace.

Sue and Bob are delightful hosts. They do everything to make you feel at home, away from home. Their property is a little slice of heaven that you get to enjoy too when staying there. It is on a quiet road in a small village and looks out onto a field of gold wheat and green trees. The property is filled with flowers and many birds make it their home too. Our accommodation was cozy and sweet and the bed was comfortable. The view from our room any time of day was relaxing and peaceful.
If you get up from the breakfast table hungry it's your own fault as they have a huge variety of options for your morning meal and they are all delicious! Fresh fruit, yogurt, homemade jams and jellies, warm croissants, coffee, tea, eggs, sausages, juice, etc. We only stayed four days but could easily have stayed much longer.
Thanks again Sue and Bob for a wonderful few days,

I have been staying at Hope Cottage over a period of more than 10 years now, mainly whilst working away from home. Sue and Bob's hospitality is second to none and it now feels like a second home. Hope Cottage is a wonderful peaceful oasis in the Oxfordshire countryside. Both the Shepherd's Hut and Garden Room offer fantastic accommodation with beautiful outlooks of the gardens and nearby countryside. The stove in the Shepherd's hut is to be recommended. There is a lovely pub within walking distance and a greater selection of restaurants in Wallingford a short drive away. If you enjoy walking there are plenty of opportunities from Hope Cottage or within a short drive. I have also enjoyed cycling the surrounding country lanes many times. I can't recommend Hope Cottage highly enough, don't think twice. I feel I arrived as a guest and became a friend.

Hope cottage is an absolute haven! Nestled in a beautiful little village outside of Oxford, this is the perfect getaway to the countryside. I stayed in the Garden Room and was struck by the beautiful views and flowers visible from my bed in the morning. It’s lovely to be able to walk straight out from my bedroom into the magical garden. I think that any time of the year, it would be great to stay and see the different seasonal plants and flowers in this abundant garden from your bedroom window.
The room was comfortable & had everything I needed, with a lovely en suite and comfy large bed. The place has real soul and character.
The hosts are incredibly welcoming and friendly - we had a great evening sharing stories over a bottle of red wine!
Thank you for the lovely stay :)

One of the best places I have been hosted. Susan is a great hoster. The breakfast is delicious and very complete. The rooms are super clean, and quiet to take the best rest. Also, there is a warmth that makes you feel like home. I liked to wake up every morning with amazing view of the english nature that you can see from the rooms.

We have just returned to Hope Cottage for another two night stay whilst on a work trip to Oxfordshire. What a fantastic experience. Sue and Bob are such welcoming hosts and ensured we had everything we needed. The shepherd's hut is located in their gorgeous cottage garden with wonderful views across the open countryside. The breakfasts were quite delicious and included croissants, homemade bread and jams as well as freshly squeezed juice and fresh fruit. The shepherd's hut was spotlessly clean and all Covid cleanliness rules were adhered to (and exceeded)! We couldn't ask for more and will definitely be returning.

I stayed in the Shepherd's Hut for 5 nights with my wife - we were on a Bach Flower Course - for which Hope Cottage is very conveniently situated. It was a great stay. The Shepherd's Hut is very comfortable and the log burner makes for a cosy stay. Breakfast is great too! Strongly recommended!

Had a lovely stay at Sue's shepherds hut. Peaceful spot, great host and what a breakfast! Great location in their garden on the edge of a friend. The local pub 3 minutes walk away was very welcoming and does food most nights.

Have a lovely time staying here. I stayed in the shepherds hut and even though it was November it was lovely and warm - either via the log burner or the electric fire. Sue is an amazing host and the breakfast spectacular. The quiet location within walking distance of a great local pub was excellent. Lots to do in the local area. Highly recommend.

We booked Hope Cottage for a short notice weekend away and we were very happy with our stay. Sue was quick to respond to our enquiry via her website and she was happy to accommodate my wife 3yo daughter and me. The room was nice, very clean and the garden was lovely. We all enjoyed the hearty breakfast and warm welcome. Fully recommended.

We were lucky enough to be able to stay in the Shepards hut for two nights in early October. The hut was incredibly cosy and clean and a lovely place to relax in between visiting friends and exploring the village. The breakfast was exceptionally good (we'd love to recreate some of the jams at home!) and it was lovely to meet Sue; we hope to return and will definitely recommend to our friends.
