Horsted Place is situated on the A26 just south of Uckfield and within 15 minutes drive of Glyndebourne. Originally a private family house, it is now a luxury country house hotel with AA red stars set in landscaped gardens with extensive views towards the South Downs. A grade II listed Victorian gothic mansion, it has original architectural features designed by Pugin and historical links to the British Royal Family. The fine dining, AA 2-rosetted restaurant offers modern English cuisine with freshly prepared seasonal local ingredients whenever possible. Afternoon teas (served on the Terrace in summer or in front of the Drawing Room fires in winter)are extremely popular. There is a croquet lawn and hard tennis court and guests also have use of the spa and leisure facilities at the East Sussex National, 2 minutes away by car.

We booked this having read a review with an offer in the Daily Telegraph.
It was an excellent decision. Upon arrival we were met with friendliness and helpfulness. We had assistance with our cases, this was very useful since our suite, Snowden, required us to ascend a flight of stairs after we had entered through the ground floor door.
The suite had a large bedroom with king size bed. A good size bathroom with plenty of soap, gels etc. A sitting room which was really comfortable. TV in both main rooms.
The offer included scones and tea upon arrival which were delicious and served in the drawing room.
Dinners were really well cooked and presented. Breakfast full service, not a buffet to be found. Kippers to die for!
The grounds looked really well kept but unfortunately whilst staying the weather was dreadful so we weren’t able to walk around them.
Thoroughly recommend and plan to return.

Booked through Secret Escapes, very nice welcome, arrived a little early, so we changed our afternoon tea and scones to a later time and then went for a swim at the nearby golf resort, a very nice large and warm pool. Returned to the hotel and given key to room on second floor, wow what a great room and a great birthday surprise for my wife. it was approx 15m x 6m, very warm and cosy, with large bathroom and walk in wardrobe. The staff put a card in the room for my wife which I mentioned when booking, good to see this did not get overlooked. At night the room was not as dark as I thought it would be as light from somewhere was visible either side of the blinds and curtains. At 05.30 a lorry came and I think emptied the bins, the management should not let this happen, at such a luxury hotel, I did mention this to the reception, one thing they do have control over is, at 07.30 emptying bottles in to the bins, luckily we were awake, but this should be left until later in the morning. The shower was not that powerful but plenty of hot water, the shower door did stick a little but not a problem. Tea and scones were very nice, it was served in the lounge area where the staff divided off the room from a small function taking place. The evening menu was a bit limited but the food we had was very good, and a good size main dish, I thought the drinks were a reasonable price for this type of hotel. The only downside to the evening was the smell of paint fumes, I think this could have been dealt with better, maybe use a room that was away from the smell, I think the garden room may have been a better option. The full English breakfast was very nice and hot. It could have done with a some back ground music in the dining room on both occasions, and just tip the staff, when handing out menus say what you do not have then, do not let people decide what they want, only to be told when taking orders, we do not have Avocados'. All the staff that we had contact with, approx 10 in number were all very pleasant and looked very smart. So overall a good stay, the paint fumes was a one off, and hopefully they sort out the early morning noise issues. Would return if we could get a similar deal. Thank you Horsted Place.

Recently returned from a one night Secret Escapes stay and was certainly impressed .
We stayed in the Windsor suite and found this to be very spacious, spotlessly clean, with lovely toiletries and extremely comfortable bed. Hospitality tray provided now.....I believe they were withheld during the earlier Covid phase.
There appeared to be an abundance of staff and without exception they were all very friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed a delicious cream tea in the afternoon which was included in our SE deal .This was served with a choice of teas( served really hot ) with sparkling clean china and cutlery . Our dinner in the evening was similarly enjoyed with some very tasty servings well presented.
We left the next day after a hearty breakfast determined to make a return visit.
A very memorable place with beautiful well maintained grounds.

What has happened???
Horsted Place used to be 100% reliably lovely. Had a family wedding here in 2008, and family and friends have been coming ever since for a treat or special occasion. Was always excellent. Not today sadly.
Came for lunch today for an “0” birthday. No one took our coats, they lay on chairs in the lounge whilst we looked at the menu, then hung on our chairs in the dining room. There were 3 main courses to choose from. We were a table of four, but still one meal was not what we ordered, by the time the correct meal arrived the rest of us had finished eating. We were rather lost on a huge table for eight, and it was laid so every one of us had the table legs in the middle of our chairs. There was a choice of 3 puddings or cheese, but they had run out of one of the puddings. Service was very polite but incredibly slow, an hour after arriving we still hadn’t started our meal. When our bill arrived no concession was made for their mistake with our choice, we had to ask for it. We were sent to reception to pay, who tried to send us back to the dining room to pay.
I don’t know what has happened, but something has gone badly wrong somewhere. It’s so disappointing to look forward to a special occasion and be so let down. Felt very sorry for my Mum, her birthday is going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. A real shame. Will not be returning.

Went here just for a full afternoon tea and was pleasantly surprised with the attention to detail in these testing times. The staff were very helpful, the necessary distancing observed and the food delicious. Without any fuss we were given a couple of boxes so that we could take away the food that we could not eat (far too much for us two). The surrounding area is quiet and scenic, the lounge where we ate, comfortable and the ambience very serene. Thoroughly enjoyable!

We have just returned from afternoon tea, which was unfortunately really disappointing and unsophisticated, especially considering the cost. There was no Lady Grey tea, so we opted for Earl Grey, which was fine. No lemon served with the tea, I had to ask for it long after the tea arrived. The worst bit for me was that the cups and saucers should be bone china for tea, not thick utility items. There should be proper sugar or sugar lumps with a tong or spoon, not paper sachets on the table. There was no serving implement for the sandwiches, scones an cakes. We were served with tea on arrival, but had to wait quite some time for the sandwiches and cakes. However, they were delicious and worth the wait. Such a shame as Horsted Place is a beautiful venue. This is not how afternoon tea should be served.

Beautiful hotel, lovely staff but not worth the money due to lack of attention and made to feel second best as booked through Secret Escapes.
Mum and I wanted a night away to catch up as soon as we could once Covid rules allowed. We found Horsted Place Hotel on Secret Escapes and paid for a suite. It was £230 for one night so not cheap but included afternoon tea, 3 course meal and breakfast.
We arrived and the hotel and grounds were beautiful. We were given our room 'Sussex' and shown to the lift which was a door with a slide open cage door that you manually open and shut. It was quite noisy. This wasn't a problem until we found our room was literally wall to wall with the lift and about 10.30pm it did multiple trips!
We went for our afternoon tea when we arrived only to discover it was cream tea so whilst we'd not had any lunch and those around us had sandwiches, cakes and scones, we had two scones with cream from a plastic pot and individual jam. So I obviously misunderstood.
We went to our room which we'd asked for in advance to be made as a twin. The room was lovely and very clean but when mum pulled her duvet back the sheet, near where her shoulders would be had a tea stain about 40cm in diameter. There was no way anyone could have made that bed and not seen it. So we had to ask for it to be changed. We went down for a drink before dinner and we were presented with a dinner menu that said 'Secret Escapes Menu' at the top - way to make us feel special!
I ordered duck and mum ordered lamb and both ordered a side of fries. When our dinner arrived they were both the same. When the waiter came back with one side of fries I asked why they were both the same. He said 'oh no I've delivered to the wrong table'. He apologised and took it away. 2 mins later the table opposite got their dinner...
I then ordered a diet coke and was given full fat, I was past complaining by then.
Then this morning we ordered room service of tea and coffee (there are no tea and coffee making facilities in the room, no kettle etc) it took a long time to come so I was in the bathroom when it arrived. The gentleman who bought it said he couldn't bring it into the room due to Covid but the room had an antiroom and my mum couldn't carry the tray and keep both doors open.
We had the full English for breakfast but I asked for poached eggs and got scrambled. I did send that back as I don't eat scrambled. The breakfast was really quite small.
So lovely hotel and pleasant staff but constant reminders that you booked a 'cheap' deal (£230 for one night!) And not enough attention to detail. I've had better service for half the price, a real shame but we still had a lovely night catching up.

Dear Minipickles, Firstly thank you for staying at Horsted Place and posting your review. I was not aware of any of the issues encountered whilst you were at the Hotel. I am certainly aware of some delays with service. I will complete an investigation. There are still important Covid protocols in place, which do impact some of our important traditional service standards. Please accept my sincere apologies, I will be writing directly. We have just returned from a wonderful break at Horsted Place.
In fact we have already booked again to visit next month.
From the minute we arrived we experienced everything that a luxury hotel could possibly provide.
Every single member of staff, without exception was polite, courteous, friendly and eager to help.
Our room, the Portsmouth suite, was absolutely beautiful. The view of the extensive and immaculately kept grounds from the enormous windows definitely added to the “wow factor”
Everything that you could possibly need was provided in the room. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bed linen was very high quality. This room was so quiet even though the hotel was full.
Everywhere even smelt lovely!
Dinner, included in our room price was probably one of the best meals we have ever eaten! Every single course was a work of art and the combination of flavours was superb. The restaurant staff were so well trained in that they were constantly aware of what was happening where, when to approach a table to offer the next course or to clear. This plays such an important part in being able to enjoy a relaxed meal.
This hotel knows how to provide every aspect of fine dining.
Breakfast the next morning was again exceptional with a really varied menu selection, good quality ingredients and beautifully cooked.
We really did not want to leave as our experience from start to finish was exceptional, hence the planned revisit.
Thank you Horsted Place - you have got this spot on!

My wife and I celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the date that we met with a stay in the excellent Horsted Place hotel. We had a wonderful time in all respects. We were most comfortable in our superior suite and we enjoyed our cream tea, dinner and breakfast, all of which were delicious. We also greatly appreciated the superb service we received from all of the hotel's staff throughout our time there. The hotel and grounds are in a lovely quiet setting. Finally, and most importantly, the precautions taken by the hotel to ensure the safety of the staff and guests during the COVID-19 pandemic, were so effective that we felt completely safe in all of the public areas within the hotel. We highly recommend Horsted Place and look forward to staying there again in future.

Stayed here for 1 night in the Nevill suite booked through Secret Escapes & in no way were we made to feel inferior because of this.
Regarding the comment from the daughter who visited with her mother the cream tea was as advertised on SE just that & not an afternoon tea as she mistakenly expected. The cream did come in a plastic pot, not because we were SE customers but because this is how it is also served for those taking afternoon tea.
Meal portions were on the small side but with 3 courses they were adequate. The lamb ordered by my husband incurred a supplemental charge as did the cheese & biscuits we both ordered but this is not unusual in any restaurant which has a set dinner menu.
The decor was dated but in the Pugin style & in keeping with the age of the property. The bedroom ornaments were not to our liking but again were in keeping with the history of the property - this is not a modern hotel & as such should have the feel of an old stately home for which it ticked all the boxes. For us this was a chance to spend a night in a house that had once been frequented by the Queen & Prince Philip with the expectation that it would present the same ambience as it did back in the day & for us it did just that & should not be spoiled by modern amenities .
The staff were friendly, polite & welcoming & we hope to return again in the future.
