Having never visited the north-east before we were drawn to the Fir Tree Country Hotel because of great reviews from earlier visitors and also because it offered a reduced room rate for solo travellers which is becoming increasingly rare.
From the minute we arrived we were made to feel welcome by every member of staff. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the standards were maintained by housekeeping throughout our stay. Although they were not big we found more than enough drawers and space for everything and nice and quiet ensuring a good night’s sleep.
The food was excellent. We always think it’s a good sign when any establishment is popular with the locals which this is. We always received attentive, cheerful service from all the front of house staff regardless of how busy they were. Yes, the pie is probably one of the best we have ever had, but the Cod Almighty or anything else with the gorgeous chips come highly recommended. Compliments to the chef and kitchen staff.
The Fir Tree staff have proved to be such great ambassadors for the area we are hoping to return before too long.

Stayed a couple of times for visits home. Friendly service, freshly cooked tasty breakfast to order and room is a reasonable size and always spotless. Small car park but hasn’t been an issue so far. Will definitely return. Everything you need for a comfortable stay.

a credit to the hospitality industry …..we needed somewhere to overnight before a ceremony in Durham Cathedral and found Fir Tree on the Internet. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote “it is better to travel hopefully than to arrive” in our case we travelled hopefully and were delighted by the warm welcome on arrival at Fir Tree, the ambiance of the hotel and the standard of our room. It is often said, when looking for places to eat, go where the locals are eating. There were lots of locals in the restaurant and outdoor dining area …our steak and ale pie and scampi were excellent, washed down with the local beer. We slept well and breakfasted well. Highly recommended

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for four nights at the end of June 2024 and were very pleased with all aspects of our stay. The bedrooms are adjacent to the main building, being recently refurbished in a tasteful modern style and containing a small en-suite with toilet and shower. Two bedside lockers and a chest of drawers provide adequate storage, but it lacks a full wardrobe. Hanging space is provided by a shelf with clothes hangers and hooks. TV is available in each room.
The room was spotless on arrival and every morning the room was fully cleaned and all towels replaced.

Breakfast in included in the room price, but the evening meal isn’t and is paid for, as are any drinks, each evening. They don’t operate a tab system. The menu reflects its County Durham location, they are very substantial, well prepared and presented by friendly and knowledgeable staff.

In summary, it’s a spacious village pub and local restaurant, that offers good quality B&B with the option taking evening meals, that are booked as required. The Sunday carvery is highly popularly with people living in the area and early booking is essential if you want a proper County Durham dinner.

The atmosphere in the dining room quiet and about 40% full, and the staff nice and friendly,
We were seated and viewed the menu, I ordered a sirloin steak and my friend had the same, I asked for mine to be done medium with no blood and was told this could not be guaranteed, my friend ordered medium to well done.
When the steaks arrived mine seemed ok initially at the edges, but in the centre is was raw and bleeding on the plate.

I asked a waitress if mine could be cooked a bit more and it was taken away. It arrived later but when I butterflied it it was raw meat still, I was told by our friends not to make a fuss.
Surely after being returned to be cooked more it should not still be raw and bleeding, I wish I had taken a photo.
I’ll not be having a steak anymore here, I should have guessed when I initially ordered the drinks and the till had a sign in front stating, ‘Chef required ‘!
Can I suggest stay away from the steaks.

I’ll start with a positive, I always enjoy the Sunday lunch here and today, as always, it was very good, hence why we have been a few times.

We have always have felt somewhat rushed but never as furious as we were today!
Were told we had 1hr, happy with that. Proceed to stand in the carvery queue for around 10 minutes, that’s each adult (2) because we had a baby at the table. So 20 minutes in and we still haven’t both got sat down with our meal. I ask for a bowl for my little girl’s food, I am told I can’t have one because I should’ve paid for a ‘baby bowl’ dinner at the bar, however we were not advised of this or able to look at a menu when we paid for the carvery, so didn’t even cross my mind as my baby is 9m and doesn’t each much (I put an extra yorkshire and extra spoon of mash on my plate…………). Why couldn’t we be informed of this when we paid for our lunches? Instead of being made to feel tight and like we’re trying to get our baby’s lunch for nout! I continue to feed her from the table, (high chairs rubbish and doesn’t have a tray). She made a mess, as expected, and I cleaned it up of course.

The bit that got me furious… a young lad who cleared our plates told us if we wanted desserts to go up to the bar and order, happy days. I went to visit the ladies before doing so, and to our surprise, the woman came over and said “I’ll need the table back in 10 mins mind…”. Okay then, so looks like we won’t have time for desserts after all!?

Just abysmal. The system is a joke. For this reason we won’t be returning, which is a shame because as I said, we really enjoy the lunch, it’s lovely!

I don’t usually post reviews, and certainly not off one experience, but a similar thing happens literally every time we visit - is it just us?! Thanks for reading if you’ve got this far.

Very disappointed, been before, bad practice to make people wait for table when only 5 tables occupied to try and make you spend more money, asked if chef had changed as food was different and poor in comparison to previous visits. I had the famous steak pie which was nothing like it was on previous visits to be told nothing had changed, which it clearly had. They might as well of called me a liar. This was not just me saying this as people I was with who had also been before also said the food was of a lower standard than previous visits. Will not visit again or recommend again.

We were looking for a dog friendly hotel for a mini break, the usual dog friendly room normally sees you reaching for bleach before you unpack but not here!
From the moment we arrived we were greeted by Shaun and his team as though we were old friends.
The room was immaculate , the bed comfortable and everything screamed clean, hats off to the housekeeping team who are superb.
Every morning we were greeted with smiles and cheerfulness as we went into breakfast, the food is far the best we have had in any hotel and on our last night we booked into the restaurant, we had the best meal and service. If you stay here the one thing I would recommend you do is have the pie! OMG this is out of this world and I believe they should offer you takeaways or at least a postal service so you can have this experience at home.
The owners of this hotel are gifted with the most hospitable and welcoming team you will find in any hotel and we shall certainly be back.
The one last word of thanks is from our furbaby who was treated and spoilt by all of the team especially Alex !

Booked in at the hotel for a three night stay between Christmas and New Year.
The Rooms and beds are small but clean, well decorated and have everything you need.
The food menu is extensive, very reasonably priced, absolutely first class quality and matched with excellent service.
Travelling frequently, for a three star hotel, I would match this place against any other three star in the country and highly recommend it for food and or accommodation. Make sure you book!

Took Mam here for birthday lunch and it was lovely. The country pub is beautiful and so much to offer particularly for tourists. We're local and will definitely be back. The menu choice was perfect for us, very reasonably priced and a nice choice of sitting/eating areas. Lovely roaring fire burning making the whole place very comfortable and warm. Staff were very efficient and pleasant. A great day was had by all.
