Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have nothing much to add to what so many others have written. Julie and David really are the perfect hosts, and I will be taking every opportunity to stay with them again when I visit the Somme battlefields. I really couldn't recommend them highly enough. Thank you both for an excellent stay, and I hope the children like my books as much as I've enjoyed my time with you 😁 See you next year, all being well. K

Property's Favourite Review
Worthy of a six-star rating, if Trip Advisor had such a thing. Stayed in 2019 and has since become my most favourite place in France. This year, I enjoyed a seven-night stay; five nights to start, and two more tacked on at the end of my travels. Julie and David are indeed a class of their own when it comes to B&Bs. While most hosts will welcome you, direct you to your room and set you up with a morning meal, a stay at Fifty6 is more like visiting family. A warm, genuine greeting awaits you as you pull into the driveway (along with an offer of a drink/snack). Having stayed in three different rooms, all offer the same amenities and are spacious and comfortable (they recently replaced the mattresses so the beds are firm and cozy). The breakfast offerings are vast; from cereals, yogurt and fruit, to personally cooked meals with local ingredients. You could easily make it a two-meal day after filling up at breakfast time! The property is huge with plenty of space to spread out, whether it's a beer in the back garden, a tea in the "library", or a glass of wine on the front patio. Often, you are able to connect with the other guests staying there, which can be a truly rewarding experience. You genuinely feel at home here. What separates this B&B from others I've stayed at is the hosts themselves. Julie and David are a perfect balance. Their knowledge of the area is immense and their helpfulness, regardless of the situation, is unmatched. Example: Julie kindly helped me sort out an issue I was having with a French SIM card in my phone, which was an endeavor in itself but she never wavered. I highly recommend taking advantage of the dinner meals they offer as Julie's culinary skills are top notch. It's a true French meal complete with cheese and dessert. David is a fabulous story teller and his passion comes out when he speaks. Our walk to and from Ovillers British Cemetery across the valley at sunset was one of the more rewarding moments from my trip. David's Walk With Me tours are well worth the time and investment. Beyond this, both hosts do everything possible to make your stay pleasant and memorable, as you can probably tell by the reviews of returning guests like myself. If you're looking for a place to stay in the heart of the Somme, look no further than this quaint B&B overlooking Mash Valley. You won't be disappointed.

The welcome, accomodation ,food and kindness is obviously so genuine it sets David and Julie Thompson apart from many other B&B and Hotels we have stayed in across the UK and Europe. At Number56 you are welcomed into a home not just a business, David and Julie share so much of themselves with you including valuable knowledge and insights , hints and tips to make your visit to the area the best experience it can be, enlightening tales of the heroes and the fallen on the Somme with insights gained from facts and the many visitors they have shared thier home with. After long days exploring the area it is lovely to share a dining table with other visitors and to hear other tales and adventures. Staying with David and Julie is like visiting a relative, warm welcome, good good and excellent conversation. 10/10 for breakfast and dinner 10/10 for the welcome and genuine hospitality you have shown us

This is an outstanding B&B hosted by Julie and David Thomson who are wonderfully warm and welcoming. The accommodation is very comfortable and the food was the best of home cooking with a French influence. The added bonus is the knowledge of the Great War and the Somme that Julie and David share so openly. The relaxed walking tour with David was engaging and educational and provided insights that one cannot get from books. He had researched a tour based on specific areas of interest we had communicated to him in advance. Merci

A perfect hosted B&B, just like they used to be. Julie and David are perfect hosts and are eager to please. If you are a battlefield enthusiast this is the place that you want to stay. The house is situated on the former German front lines for the Somme battles of WWI and David is extremely knowledgeable both about the history and the geography of the battlefield. Aside from that, this is a lovely place to stay with comfortable beds, clean facilities and great food and hospitality. If you have the need or the desire to stay in the Albert area I highly recommend it. I recommend booking dinner if you can.

This is the most amazing B&B I have ever been in. Julie and David are just perfect hosts. The food is easily as good as you'd get in a top restaurant. The rooms are very comfortable and homely, and the atmosphere is one of staying with family. I was with a group of 5 other bikers and our hosts could not do more to make our stay more enjoyable. A very knowledgeable couple on the events of WW1 especially the Lochnagar Crater. You even get a daily weather report. I really cannot rate this gem highly enough. Thank you both for making and enjoyable few days, perfect.

This is the second time I have visited here and, hence, the second review. It deserves an excellent second review as well as the excellent first review as it really is a great experience. Starting with the accommodation, it is very clean and comfortable with a small number of well decorated themed rooms. There are many First World War artifacts and books in the common guest areas to keep any First World War enthusiast fully entertained. There is a good choice of breakfast options including a fine cooked breakfast to build up the energy levels before any battlefield tours. Dinner is optional but you’d be crazy not to take the option. It’s always a delicious home cooked four-course meal with drinks and a very convivial atmosphere amongst a cozy number of guests and the hosts. The highlight of the trip were the optional battlefield tours. These are absolutely excellent tours given by David and researched by Julie. David will drive to select sites in the Somme and provide incredible narrative. This brings the battlefield to life and is a superb addition to book based research. David has walked the trenches many times and the knowledge gained from this and thorough research cannot be underestimated. If you are looking to trace a relative who fought in the Somme area, this is the way to do it. To summarise, excellent accommodation and dining. Very hospitable and caring hosts with a deep well of Somme battlefield and history knowledge. Superb battlefield tours. Good value for money. Looking forwards to another trip in the future.

This is the best B&B I have ever stayed at ever and it is so outstanding that it puts most hotels in the shade. Number 56 is owned and operated by the amazing Julie and David and I reckon there are no better hosts in France. Everything from rooms, food (oh the cheese board!) ambiance, comfort and location are superb. If you are on a First World War Somme battle field journey, stay at Number 56. Stay for all the reasons I have listed but also because David is THE man for understanding so much more about not just the battles but also the landscape and its impact and effects on the soldiers of both sides. Don't hesitate, stay here, you will not regret it. P.S. David, both my grandfather and I thank you for finding and walking Brompton Road Trench.
