We were unlucky on our moose watching tour in that it was too hot for the moose to leave the trees to browse at the lakeside. Our tour guide was determined though and we did get a long distance view of a moose through binoculars and heard another crashing through the undergrowth. She was well informed and informative but the...

We just returned from our first trip up to NEOC and our experience could not have been better. We stayed in one of the cabins with our 2 small children (ages 5 and 6) for 2 nights and wish we could have stayed longer. The property is gorgeous, and there is no shortage of activities (we did a guided Moose...

What an amazing trip down the Penobscot with 88 other rafters and 12 boats and guides. 2 runs and lunch which was really quite good, and plenty of. Opt for the wet suit if the water is below 68 degrees. The photographer and video graphed did an amazing job of capturing the trip. I would do this trip again in...

My wife, brother, nephew and I visited NEOC in October and cannot wait to go back – next time to stay right on their Twin Pines campground! The entire property is amazing – right on beautiful Millinocket Lake, with a gorgeous view of majestic Mt. Katahdin from basically anywhere on the property. What brought us to NEOC was a pre-arranged...

Our tour guide really tried to find moose. It rained the day we were supposed to go out and the center called us and gave us the option to postpone for the following day, which we did. We drove 13 hours to see some moose. Maybe it was the wrong time of the year I don't know but it was...

Dear Christe: I know it is very disappointing to not see a moose, especially after such a long drive to get here. The prime season for seeing moose in Maine is June and July. We hope that you will take advantage of our moose tour guarantee sometime in the future - we will be happy to bring you out again...

The campground has a lot of well-spaced out camp sites and bathrooms (both pit and flush) within easy walking distance. We stayed in a canvas cabin and it was rustic, basically a tent that we didn't have to tear down before going rafting all day, so that was a plus for us. If you are looking for a luxury cabin,...

Be aware there are two NEOC sites; we were unknowingly sold a package with a cabin at the Penobscot Outdoor Center but all the meals at Twin Pines. So we were expected to make an 18 mile round trip to get our breakfast! Twin Pines is really nice but the rafting centre is very basic. If you decide to go...

Matt - I am sorry that there was any lack of clarity on our part regarding our 2 different locations and what it means to be at one or the other. We own the Penobscot Outdoor Center - our Campground, that is where our whitewater rafting base is - it sounds like you stayed at our basic bunkhouses there. We...

I pitched a couple of tents with two friends of mine at the NEOC for five nights, and it was perfect for us. The tent sites all have a picnic table and a fire pit, plus enough room to park a car. The campground has hot showers and flushable toilets. The office is normally open til 10:00 at night, and...

“We stayed in Wax Wing cabin and loved it. Big two bedroom, good kitchen, which we did not need to use. A few steps from the lake.”

“We stayed in #8 Snowy Owl, one of the newer rooms. It was very quiet. Fully equipped kitchen. View of the lake is blocked by the forest, but you could still see it a little bit through the trees. We chose this cabin because it is further from the main lodge area, which means there is less traffic, quieter, but some of those other main cabins (I think those are also the older ones) have views of the lake so that's the trade off. There wasn't a "real" patio area but they may be planning on building one. When we were there, there was a table and chairs set up to the side of the house by the grill, which worked but we ended up moving it to the front of the cabin by the lake so we didn't have to look at the cabin next door! The cabins are fairly spread out. You can see the ones to either side but there is a decent distance between them.”
