We picked the White Horse for a family weekend as a base for local walks. It served this purpose perfectly and the rooms were clean and comfortable. But It is worth a visit just for the food, which was outstanding. Every single member of our family of four was delighted by the choice available, the presentation and the taste.

It’s reasonably priced for food of this quality (the most expensive starter was £8 and main courses ranged from about £13 to just over £20). The staff were friendly and attentive and it was well-equipped with social distancing measures and widely available hand sanitizer. It has an atmospheric bar, too.

As we were staying for the night, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast the next morning and then returned after a long Sunday morning walk for Sunday lunch. We couldn’t get enough of the place.

Huge thanks to the staff for a warm welcome. Can’t recommend enough this as a place to stay or just to dine.

Just what you need, a nice village pub with a good restaurant and rooms in an annex at the rear of the property so there is no pub noise to interrupt a good nights sleep. Our room was not large but perfectly comfortable for our one night. Immaculately clean bedclothes, large fluffy bath towels and very quiet. Dinner in the restaurant was from a good varied menu, well prepared, tasty and reasonably priced. Easy to find with a large car park it was perfect for a stay when visiting the sights of the area.

Didn't realise that there are separate listings for the accomodation and the restaurant. hey ho.

Anyhow, we stayed for 3 nts in the first week in June having stayed there several times in the past. The rooms are in a small annexe to the back of the pub so are secluded and away from the inn itself and on two floors. Chairs and tables outside the ground floor rooms with a view of the adjacent small field make for a peaceful early morning coffee spot. Very very quiet location.

Breakfast is great with fresh fruit; local yoghurt; juices as well as other excellent menu choices. Do go & visit

We have had good meals here over the last few years but we were disappointed last night. The burger, which isn't cheap, was the size of a meatball - the smallest burger my husband has ever seen. The pepper sauce which came with the steak was watery and lacked flavour and our waitress was sultry to the point of being rude. We won't rush back.

Just returned from 3 night break here and was disappointed when we were shown to our room it was very small and the bathroom was tiny. I assumed the hotel was full so we'd been given what they had left even though I booked a while ago. We made the best of our stay even though we couldn't sleep in the heat the room was stifling. I mentioned to the girl when we paid that a larger room would have been more appropriate for our 3 night stay but she was quite rude and said you get the room you book ? Not sure what that meant! It turned out the hotel was half empty which really annoyed me. Apart from that it was ok not sure it deserves 4 stars but that's just my opinion

Disappointing experience in a lovely old pub in this pretty village. Unknowledgeable lack lustre service, mediocre food did not justify the unexpected 10% service charge added to the bill. Bland Risotto. Pastry on dessert tart was overcooked, it was replaced with no apology.

We recently stayed here just the one night and what a lovely place. We were greeted by James in the bar who checked us in and showed us to our room. The rooms are all in a well decorated external building and although the room was not perfect it was an honest, genuine comfortable room.
We then had drinks in the small but pleasant bar then after a short rest and change of clothes we had a lovely meal in the restaurant.
We both slept really well.
Breakfast was again really nice with a good choice.
We checked out and Chris was really friendly and helpful (as were all the staff) and said how tough it had been with the lockdowns.
The White Horse Inn is an 18th establishment and you really will not be disappointed if you stay here.
I hope this review is helpful.

We selected The White Horse based on its location and just hoped that it would be a good place to celebrate a birthday and stay overnight. All four of us were delighted with the amazing food and excellent service. We took advantage of the great D,B&B offer. Although the rooms are quite small, they are clean, bright and comfortable but it is the quality of the food that we will remember most. Already planning to meet up again for a winter overnight stay.

We visited yesterday evening for a friends birthday celebration and also stayed overnight. What a lovely friendly place. There were six of us . The food was brilliant. A good choice of food. The meal went well helped by really attentive but not intrusive staff. A drink in the bar afterwards was relaxed, Both the restaurant and bar were comfortable. The accommodation is in a separate block to the rear. Modern and warm and again comfortable. Our room had a lovely view over the countryside. We had an enormous breakfast which was filling. Again a good choice of items. There is a large car park and I noticed an electric car charging point, which is an asset in such rural location. It is obviously a great base for walking as the weather improves. All in all a lovely stay.

Having visited the area on day trips we decided to find somewhere with a restaurant to stay over and the White Horse fitted the bill. The food was good, the staff friendly and the room comfortable. My only criticism was the lack of a plug socket near the mirror which made hair drying difficult but that is a minor point. The location is excellent for walkers and there are many places to visit locally. I would certainly stay again.

poor reviews about pork pie
Answer from WHCompton
Calne, United Kingdom
We are sorry to hear that that our home made pork pie hasn't been enjoyed! We take great pride in our customers experience being a delightful one from the warm welcome, delicious food (or drink) and exceptional service throughout. We would like to clarify our pork pies are all home made using only the finest pork shoulder, which is always local and sometimes home reared at The White Horse, so very local indeed! The pastry is a traditional lard recipe also. If ever a dish is not to someone's' taste we are more than happy to rectify this if informed.
