Impressed by this place. Felt very COVID-safe and we were given a choice of tables in a very spacious, airy room with spaced-out tables. Staff were somewhat friendly, but very attentive and our food and drinks were served quickly. The pork chop was amazing! I really liked the saltiness of the mustard sauce and the texture of the potato cake. Also it was a proper slab of meat so I was stuffed afterwards and didn't even have space for dessert.

Although relatively quiet on a lovely summer Friday, our mixed family group enjoyed a well presented lunch from an imaginative menu. Although well above "pub grub", prices are below "gastro" levels, the beer is well kept, and we were seated in a covered outdoor terrace and served pleasantly and promptly. The pub is in a delightful village close to the White House and Ridgeway, and has a good sized car park. Well worth a visit!

We stayed in The Rose and Crown for a night and had a really lovely time. We were looking for a quiet pub hotel with good food and got everything we wanted and more. The village is very pretty and extremely quiet (the pub is the only amenity that we could see). It was easy to find by car and plenty of parking was available. It was very Covid secure; you were asked to scan the QR code upon entry and masks were mandatory if moving around the venue.

We checked in and were shown to our room, which was a beautifully presented and spacious family room. There was a huge double bed in one room and twin beds through the interconnecting door. The room was very tastefully decorated and very clean, with a shower over the bath. Basic toiletries were provided as well as tea and coffee making facilities, flat screen tv in each room and a hairdryer.

We had dinner in the pub which was excellent; the lamb croquette with pea purée to start was exceptional and worth visiting again just for that! We had burgers for main and sticky toffee pudding for dessert, all very tasty. The pub had a nice atmosphere and there was a nice patio area outside with beautiful flowerbeds for outdoor seating.

The beds were super comfortable and we had a very peaceful night’s sleep. Breakfast the next morning was absolutely delicious! We had a full English which came with the works - sausages were especially superb.

The whole experience was excellent and we are already looking forward to returning. Although the purpose of our visit was solely to meet in the pub and have a catch up, it seems the area is known for walking and certainly had some beautiful scenery locally.

My one tiny gripe would be that the music sound system downstairs was switched on at around 8am in the morning and could be clearly heard in our room above- I was awake anyway but if I hadn’t been I think I would have been a little peeved! A very minor gripe from a very light sleeper which may not affect someone else at all!

Thanks to all the staff who were super professional and efficient and made the stay all the more exceptional. We had the perfect weekend!

Stopped at The Rose and Crown as a break in the drive from Cornwall to Colchester and were pleasantly surprised by the incredible food. I am a foody and not easily impressed but Calvin the Chef's food was sublime. Excellence in sauces and duck cooked to perfection and beautifully presented (not ott or gimicky).
We were initially warmly greeted by Conrad and Richard who were both very affable as well as very clued up about the local area. The upstairs of the hotel could really do with some money being spent on a refurb as it is somewhat dated (windows painted shut, plastic baths etc) but the downstairs was lovely.
A warm friendly Inn with just Michelin standard food. Highly recommend this place.

We booked for one night during a cycling trip along the the Ridgeway, it's a great place for a stopover.

Holly and her team were so friendly and welcoming and really helpful when we had a bike mechanical issue, asking her locals for support, which they kindly provided

Our room was spacious and nicely decorated with very good bathroom and shower facilities.

The pub area is has character and a good selection of beers, nice area outside to sit in the sun.

The breakfast was really excellent

All in all a very enjoyable stay

Although email confirmation said checkin was at 5pm, in fact check in was at 5.30pm due to a staff shortage. Small hotel: the cook for breakfast doubled as wait staff which meant service was a bit slower than what you might expect but it is a real full English breakfast. Socket for shaver didn't work but my room did have enough electrical sockets for my gear unlike some others. Room was large and very nice. Rooms are above the bar so the sound of the music from the bar can be heard in your room which might bother you if you need to get to sleep early. People who work there are very friendly and helpful. Dinner was good and filling. Ashbury itself is a very pleasant village with thatched roof houses opposite the hotel. If you are hiking the Ridgeway, as I was, this is a good option as it's a day's walk from Wantage to the East and Ogbourne St. George to the West and the hotel is right next to path down from the Ridgeway (and the bus stops if you are arriving that way).

Holly is a fantastic manager of the R&C. From the moment I arrived there was a welcoming atmosphere. I was staying for a nearby work event so had to skip the evening meal offerings which was a shame as the menu looked great. There was a lovely atmosphere on the patio outside as I arrived.

An extra early start for me meant I missed breakfast from 8 but one of Holly's lovely team arrived extra early to make me a gorgeous Americano to take with me and Holly had left a little bag of flapjacks, fruit and treats to keep me going. So kind! I felt very looked after and nothing was too much trouble.

I was allocated Room 5 - the family room with two bedrooms. A fan in the room was a nice touch and helped me sleep in the mini heatwave. My only constructive feedback would be that the bathroom in Room 5 could do with a bit of a refresh or refit. Some tired tiling/grouting. The shower screen wasn't really doing a great job and the shower was pretty tricky to turn on and off. But it was powerful and woke me up a treat!

Day 2 I stayed for breakfast which was cooked to order. My porridge was lovely and a generous portion with honey on the side. There were full English options available which looked good!

I loved my chats with Holly and her team during my stay. I would recommend staying there definitely.

The Rose & Crown gave us a very warm welcome.
There was also dog biscuits on offer as soon we walked in.
We had a very nice meal with our pooch curled up at our feet.
The room was very comfortable with an en-suite bathroom & tea/ coffee making facilities.
Dogs allowed in the rooms too at no extra cost.
We had a great breakfast to finish our stay.
All in all a lovely , comfortable place to drink , eat & sleep.

Arrived for Sunday lunch said "hello" no reply, okay never mind! Service was generally slow, roast was okay,(my beef was blue, and sent back) nothing special for the prices charged. The décor and spot of the pub is great, I wanted it to be special. Such a shame, this place missed a host, ship does not sail without a captain!!!

My husband and I found ourselves child Free so decided upon a last minute visit to The Rose and Crown for dinner. Although the restaurant was nigh on empty, lacking a social atmosphere, the food more than made up for it! We had private dining and top quality food. I had a steak and my husband venison chilli, the portion was huge! The quality of the steak was outstanding and cooked to perfection. I also asked for a salad to go with it rather than fries and was delighted when a huge bowl of salad came out with different types of tomatoes etc, it really was good quality and quantity! We will def go back, just hopefully when there’s a bit more of an atmosphere!
