Our stay at the hotel was fairly pleasant, but I'm not in a rush to return.

The hotel is set in the grounds of a golf course and the views are spectacular. The location is fabulous and quiet considering you literally come off the motorway and it's right in front of you. Every member of staff we encountered was polite and punctual and check in was quick and easy with free parking. We stayed in room 11 in the stables block. There isn't a lift which is fair enough given the age of the building but this could have been advertised. Our room was a decent size, however.. the headboard, lamp shades were extremely dusty, the window didn't shut properly, the TV was not tuned in and would not find any channels when we tried to tune it ourselves, and there was a mass of dead insects on the bathroom windowsill.

I think it's good that the facilities i.e pool & sauna are included in the price however, the pool could do with a good clean as I felt extremely slimy afterwards, much like I'd swam in a pool of snot. The bar services in the main building was a little slow but we enjoyed a drink while looking at the view nonetheless.

The stables building is very creaky, and you can quite literally hear every little noise so being away as a couple, we bad to be very quiet in that respect. I myself had an awful night sleep, as the bed and pillows was extremely firm, it was like sleeping on a paving slab.

It was a fairly ok stay, but I'm not in a rush to return and I am so happy to be sleeping in a comfortable bed tonight!

Stayed here for one night stay with bed, breakfast and evening meal basis.

Arrived early, so had lunch in the small restaurant by the pool. It was very good value for money and tasty too.

We checked in and were allocated room 35. The room was warm and cosy with a comfortable bed and the bathroom had been updated and contained a shower over the bath.

We ordered dinner for 6.30 pm and were shown to a table in the dining room. We were advised that we could order 3 courses from one menu or 2 courses from the other menu.

I ordered a rump steak, which carried a £2 excess, the other meal was a chicken dish. Our meals arrived and they were delicious.

For dessert we ordered the chocolate torte and the cheese board. When these arrived we were amazed by the size of the dishes. We left the restaurant replete.

I enquired at reception if the hotel sold morning papers. The young girl said she started work at 6.30 am and would call into a paper shop on her way to work to get a paper for us, surely above and beyond what would be expected of an employee.

We came down for breakfast and picked up our newspaper. We chose our cereals and were asked if we would like a cooked breakfast, which we ordered with poached eggs. The breakfast was very good. We then went to make some toast and encountered a problem we had noticed earlier, the knives are not sharp enough to even cut toast in two.

We read the paper for a while, then went for a swim. The pool isn’t large, and there is a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna in addition to a small gym. The local people using the spa were very friendly.

The staff were all efficient, friendly and efficient.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend staying here.

Stayed for one night for a spa break. The hotel is well connected by bus from Darlington centre. The bus stop is on the main road (ask for Forrester's Arms) then a 7-10 Mon walk down the road to the hotel.

As we were unable to check in until 3pm we took lunch in the very quiet restaurant overlooking the golf course then headed straight to the spa (separate building) for our treatments. The staff were very friendly although the health club is incredibly tired with condensation and mould on the windows, a rather heavily chlorinated, grubby pool with peeling plastic on the edges and an out of order jacuzzi. The sauna was nice and hot although didn't use the steam room. Treatments were nice with lovely knowledgeable staff. Clean towels and robes provided.

Heading back to the hotel to check in, we were provided with twin room no.7 which we'd hoped was allocated following our request for a quiet room. It soon became clear that this is not at all a quiet room thanks to the location directly above the kitchen, a very vocal chef who likes to shout rather than speak and sing at the top of his voice, accompanied by some foul language made for a rather disturbed evening. We did mention to the reception staff on two occasions and the lovely Mandy said she'd have a word with him as previous guests had also complained about the noise. We were assured that the kitchen closes at 9pm and the noise will cease. It remained noisy until around 10pm unfortunately, with music pumping and his terrible foghorn voice blaring out above the tv volume in our room.

The room itself is tired, but maintains its charm. Very old furniture, traditional furnishings and an old carpet isn't to our taste. Nor were the very cold single layer windows (this is the case throughout the hotel) which meant we had to keep the curtains closed and the heating up high to remain comfortable. The bathroom was clean but needed some TLC - two dead spiders on the ceiling, some hair dye stains on the grout and a partially blocked plughole.

Unfortunately we had forgotten to bring toothpaste which is an absolute necessity. However, the lovely Mandy on reception was kind enough to source some from another guest for us which saved the day. What an absolute gem she is!
Mandy also greeted us on checkout and we for to meet her gorgeous Cockapoo Bertie who kindly gave us some cuddles.

Taxi back into Darlington was £9.

Overall an okay stay only made good by the wonderful staff (bar the noisy chef). Not sure we'd return as we felt the price was expensive for such a run down hotel.

My family and I have attended the New Year's Eve party for a few years running and it is fabulous! This year the room was decorated in a black and gold theme- clearly attention to detail was at the forefront of Vicky and her teams mind. A very well done to them. We all loved it.
As always, the lovely Mandy on reception gives the warmest of welcomes and goes above and beyond to make sure you're happy and looked after. She is an absolute credit to the venue and the staffing team. She's a joy! Honestly, Mandy noticed my struggle with my bad hip and offered me a different room, but I insisted I'd be fine. She later noticed my Dad's struggle with the stairs, so we've booked for this year and we're in a more accessible room. We can't wait already. Oh, and hats off to the catering staff who served up some delicious food. Also to the dj who had everyone dancing. I highly recommend this wonderful place. I can't think of a better way to bring in the new year- family, friends, beautiful venue, great food, great party, lovely staff, and a good old merry time!

Could be a lovely hotel as has some beautiful views especially around the golf course, however the whole hotel is run down and in need of some serious renovation. We had booked one of the feature rooms but we’re disappointed to see every surface was either sticky or covered in dust. The walls were covered in dirty marks and the whole room needed re-plastering. The chairs and other seating in the room we’re visibly dirty, there was hair in the bathroom and one of the towels had blood on it from a previous guest. We actually wiped the services and got rid of a lot of dust and makeup from previous customers (wipes in pictures below)

The restaurant then couldn’t find our booking which I pre-booked before arrival and confirmed with reception when checking in. The manager had a conversation about us literally 2 metres away from us where she said no we don’t have any tables for them. We were eventually mmmmm seated but the service was very poor and very slow. We were in the restaurant for over 75 minutes before we got our main meal. Our drinks were wrong and we ordered water for the table which never arrived. While we paid the manager asked how the meal was when we explained how slow the service had been she said we’ve been really busy. The food wasn’t great, my starter was really salty and the mains were not worth the wait although they weren’t terrible. We were given complimentary chips for the wait but we didn’t eat these as we were fed up at this point and just wanted to go back to our room. There was no communication during the meal about waiting times and staff were seen rarely.

You could hear people moving around above us the whole time we were in our rooms.

For a hotel that describes itself as a stunning period property we were just left feeling disappointed.

My partner and I arrived on the Sunday afternoon and were greeted warmly at reception. The lady receptionist saw I was using a walking stick and immediately offered us an alternative room with fewer stairs to climb. That was an incredibly generous and well appreciated gesture.
The room was spacious and clean with a large comfortable bed. The TV was large and the Wi Fi was amazing. The bathroom was very clean and had a shower and bath. The view from the room was outstanding too.
The only area open for drinks was the Brafferton Suite which was extremely large as it doubled a dining area. We decided to eat here for the first evening and the food arrived quickly.
My partner ordered a burger and I had the fish and chips. We also ordered a side of buttered vegetables.
All were well cooked, delicious and ample.
On the Monday we ate in Oswalds restaurant and were well looked after.
My partner went for the rump steak, with blue cheese sauce and I had the pork steak with garlic butter sauce. Both came with tomato, mushroom, onion rings, corn on the cob and hand cut chips. Again we ordered a side of buttered vegetables. Everything was perfect.
Both mornings were started with a full English Breakfast which again, was delicious.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were looked after superbly well by all members of staff. They are a credit to the hotel.
We will most certainly be returning.

My wife and I stayed for one night on dinner B&B basis and free use of the spa facilities and thoroughly enjoyed it. The location, although near a main road and motorway was ideal, very quiet and relaxing. The evening meal was from a fixed menu but the selection available was very good quality and tasty. Breakfast was cooked to order with all the other expected trimmings. I would highly recommend this hotel as the staff in reception through to the restaurant were very helpful and friendly. Rooms were very clean and tidy with the decor very good

Stayed here yesterday in a feature room on a DBB basis for my wife's birthday. Overall the hotel needs a bit of TLC, our room (no 1) had patches of plaster pealing off the ceiling, holes in the carpet and in the curtains on the four poster bed. The bathroom also needs some attention around the bath (re-sealing). Issues with bath towels having 'gone missing', only 1 in our room (although another was acquired for us from the gym) and no toiletries until we went and asked at reception. Staff were really friendly and helpful and are clearly trying their best during the ongoing Covid19 situation however. Bar not open on our arrival, although we were able to order drinks at reception and have them brought to us. Food at both evening meal and breakfast was good, although my wife's Chorizo Scotch egg starter appeared to have no Chorizo in it.

My wife and I booked a single night at this hotel on Saturday 14th August for the first time .We normally stay at the Premier Inn or the Holiday Inn and have done so for for many years . We could not book anywhere neared to Newton Aycliffe as all full . Used Booking.com and booked a double room costing £68 (no breakfast which was okay).
We dropped off our bag in the afternoon in the room , but did not have chance to check the room .
The Stables is an accommodation block separate to the main hotel . On first impression the Stables were tired and in need of cleaning and renovation . Upon entering the room at about 9.30pm we discovered that there was only one bath towel .The room was 'grubby' and I found an empty Durex box and wrapper in a drawer ! Contacted room service and eventually a member of staff turned up with two bath towels , no hand towels . I saw spiders and cobwebs in the room and bathroom . Clearly the room was not being cleaned properly .
Settled down for bed and found the TV was not working at all . I spent about 20 minutes trying to tune it , but it did not work . Sleeping was a nightmare as the bathroom fan did not switch off , so made a noise all night .
In the morning went to have a shower and had to leave it running for about 15 minutes before it warmed up .
We checked out and I informed the reception staff about the issues . Advised that hotel staff have to wash towels and bedding due to problems beyond their control .Also advised that local TV transmitter mast had been struck by lightening and all service was down for the foreseeable future . I questioned why notes had been left on the TV to this effect . Staff had no answers to cleanliness issues etc .
Staff were pleasant enough , but no offers made to compensate .
When we arrived that night the hotel appeared to be very busy .
This was the worse hotel room we have ever stayed in in the UK . It appears that the owners are not offering basic services , certainly in relation to the Stables.
If you book this hotel room , beware of staying in the Stable block .

Stayed here for work for one night, room 11 of the stable block, thought I got the room for quite a good price at £56 but honestly it’s not worth half that. Granted I didn’t use any of the golfing facilities / swimming pool etc and opted for room service rather than eat in the restaurant so that I could work, however the room was filthy.
Bathroom hadn’t even been wiped over never mind cleaned - I could see where the previous occupant had put their toiletries from the marks left, sink covered in stains, bath had hairs, tile grout was mouldy. None of the tables in the bedroom, there were four including bedside tables, had even been wiped over, phone was thick with dust, makeup powder all over the dressing table, carpet hadn’t been hoovered, the cups hadn’t been changed so there were the dregs of somebody else’s coffee in the bottom of them, most disgusting of all the pillows and sheets were dirty, one pillowcase stained and the duvet was halfway across the bed when I arrived. Luckily for me the towels seemed clean so I slept on them as nobody answered the reception phone when I called repeatedly to ask them to bring up clean sheets, I also luckily brought my own water bottle so I managed without the cups.
How they get away with this and call it 4* I don’t know, surely hygiene should be a priority now more than ever but I honestly didn’t want to touch anything in this room, I stay in hotels on a regular basis for work and I’ve stayed in rooms less than half this price and at least felt like they were clean, - don’t stay here they don’t deserve the business.
