Our second visit to Marebella ... Gerhard and Shalene welcomed us warmly to their beautiful modern home. The views are spectacular. The house is in a perfect position and the rooms which are on the ground floor are very comfortable and quiet. Gerhard and Shalene are very friendly and helpful with advice and bookings of restaurants and activities in the area. The have a fascinating collection of natural artifacts. Shalene produced a great breakfast each day. Many thanks Shalene and Gerhard and happy Christmas!

Our first visit to Marebella. Gerhard and Shalene welcomed us warmly to their beautiful modern home full of history from their life, which they are more than happily to share. Gerhard and Shalene are very friendly and helpful with advice and booking of restaurant and activities nearby. The location is very beautiful with an admirable sea view where you can spot whales! I would without hesitating recommend everyone to stay with Gerhard and Shalene if you ever want to go De Kelders and do some whale watching.

Thank you Gerhard and Shalene for a memorable stay. We will definitely visit you and this amazing place again in the future.

Dearest Shirley and Wolfgang, we thank you very much for your kind and lovely words about us and our Marebella and we are extremely happy that you again enjoyed your stay with us. You have been in luck as most of the whales have left Walker Bay and are now on their way down south. It was a dream whale season what you have experienced during your stay. Everything of the best to both of you, stay healthy and as happy the way we know you and we are already looking forward to see you again. Gerhard and Shalene

I'm Filippo, Im Italian. My wife Patrizia and me we went to Marebella, Shaleene and Gerhard's guesthouse, at De Keders for (unfortunately only) a couple of days before leavings for Kruger park.
We had our best stay in South Africa there!
Marebella is fantastic and in a wonderful position. The coast is very interesting with ancient caves to visit and fabulous beaches.
Most important is that we've found new friends because Shaleen and Gerhard are not only excellent in welcoming guests but they know how to create bonds that go well beyond Marebella's environment.
We will forever remember the sweet breakfasts on the terrasse with that astonishing view and the good talks when we drunk a fantastic "millesimé" as aperitif!
We hope to have them as our guests in Italy this summer and for sure we'll come back again to Marebella in the good whale season! (July - November).
Thanks again Shaleene and Gerhard!

We visited Marebella Guest house in the middle of February 2023, It was wonderful, the house is so esthetic and artistic so just walking inside make you feel so inspired but also at home and relaxed. You look into a very nicely decorated house with a stunning view over the beautiful coast line. The house is a perfect place for sitting down and watch the sea. I visited the place in 2005 and 2006 and since that time always wanted to come back. The visit in February was so pleasant in all means, wonderful breakfast overlooking the ocean. Shalene and Gerhard create a very nicely and homely atmosphere and recommend nice bathing places just outside the house but also the local beaches. Their local knowledge and attachment to the place is really worth a stay and Marebella. Gerhard is a wonderful tourist guide and recommend places and other bed and breakfast places with good and safe quality. I will always return to the this place. I recommend the place highly. You can take long walks and the scenery is stunning. I hope to come back soon.

We thank you so much for your kind words about us and the experience you had in De Kelders. There are so many beautiful places to see and hidden gems to experience around here and it would just be delightful to see you again and spoil you some more. Shalene and Gerhad were wonderfully friendly and helpful hosts. They obviously take great pride in and care of their home. The Marbella is so clean and well-kept. I loved the beautiful natural art work that decorated the home. I was taking pictures of almost every different part of the house and walls. The rooms are very spacious. The surroundings are quiet and the views of the Walker Bay are simply unbeatable.

De Kelders with Gerhard Shalene to discover Gansbaai Bay and Hermanus, a secret tip everyone should know.

3 times South Africa, 3 times in beautiful Marebella. This is the ideal place to explore the spectacular coastline between Hermanus and DeKelders.
Almost even better, Shalene's breakfast, prepared with a lot of love.

Great views of whales which swam in very close to the cliffs immediately below us and there is a really lovely beach nearby. Rooms were rather bare and unwelcoming e.g. tv aerial but no TV. Not clear whether we could use any other "common areas" and the fact that all the lights were off (even the entrance) when we returned at 8.30 pm from the restuarant meant that it appeared somewhat unwelcoming. Being charged for the "welcome" beer was a surprisng sting in the tail.

We stayed here in early February 2015. The reason for choosing Gansbaai was so my husband could do a shark dive, which Shalene from the Marbella helped us book. They also booked restaurants for both nights we were there, and their recommendations were great. One of the restaurants we went to had no liquor license, so Shalene and Gerhardt have a great wine list that you can choose from (the nearest shops to the B&B are a good 3-4kms away).

There are only 2 rooms, and both are right at the entrance to the building. The room is simple and clean. The facilities in the room as somewhat lacking-there is no fridge, no air conditioning, no fan. It was very warm when we stayed, and the first night we sweltered. The second night we were provided with a fan which was better, but due to the short cable on the fan, we had to have it right by the top of the bed to have any effect, and the fan was loud.

The bathroom is simple as well but a decent size.

We only had breakfast here once due to the early start for the shark dive. It seemed ok.

My main issue with the Marbella is that at all the other places we stayed at whilst in South Africa, we were welcomed with a drink, shown around, told when breakfast was, what the wifi code was, told about the honesty bar etc etc. We had none of this here. I also found Gerhardt very forceful, but appreciate that I shouldn't mark down this review due to a personality clash. I do think however he should be aware of how he comes across.

Not somewhere we would go back to, both due to the location of the B&B and the personality clash.

Dear Anna, If you read our Tripadvisor reviews you will notice that there are many comments about how much we care about our guests. Our suggestions and recommendations have always been highly valued and appreciated. Unfortunately we now realise that you did not want to accept any help and in fact experienced our attention negatively when we simply wanted to save you hours of queuing at Home Affairs in Cape Town and suggested that you rather visit one or two other offices en-route to Cape Town with very little waiting times. Perhaps with too much enthusiasm in your opinion. We both welcomed you personally as we do all our guests, congratulated you on your recent marriage, showed an interest in your experiences in South Africa and told you about the area and the evening dinner options. It is true, we only discussed breakfast time and the wi-fi password later. There are six power points in our guestrooms so the fan which we provided did not need to be on top of your bed if you had taken a little time to look around. Furthermore our website does not indicate that we have air conditioning nor an honesty bar and since we are strictly non self-catering there is no provision for a fridge in our guest rooms. You did make use of our private fridge which we did not mind at all. You also spent most of your time with us on the internet using the free wi-fi we provide. Besides, as you put it, a personality clash, we are disappointed about your comments about our location. As we always make very clear in all our correspondence and on our website, De Kelders is a nature paradise and totally un-touristic. It is of course a matter of personal taste, but if you don’t like enthusiasm, incredible natural beauty and 180 degree uninterrupted sea views, don’t stay at Marebella! Gerhard & Shalene Pirker
