The only true guesthouse in a colonial mansion in front of the river for travelers in Mompos. We have comfortable, spacious and clean en suite private rooms as well as more economical "backpacker rooms", a communal kitchen, a sitting room with cable TV and a large colonial main room. The Casa Amarilla is equipped with wifi and hammocks sway between the pillars of the house around the internal garden and those who come for just a day or two often end up spending more time enjoying the roof terrace and company of other like-minded voyagers. Come and enjoy colonial Mompos - the Garciamarquian heartland.

I stayed here with my husband and his parents. The rooms were neat and clean. We felt safe. Everyone coming into the hotel had to disinfect their shoes and hands before entering the hotel. Everyone must wear face masks when in common areas. The staff was so helpful and kind. Great central location. The breakfast was DELICIOUS! If you want something special, (like an egg arepa) you can request the day beforehand. Absolutely loved this place.

I enjoyed my three nights at the Casa Amarilla. It’s a small hotel just a 30 second walk from Magdalena River. It is located in the old town at one end of the main strip of historic houses, churches and plazas on the river. The city is making a pedestrian area going the other direction, so when it is finished the hotel will be even better situated.

The rooms are cozy and comfortable. The hotel was a private residence in its past life, but the current owner did a great job converting it to a hotel while maintaining a feeling of an intimacy. They have a private bath, air conditioning, and are cleaned daily.

The Casa Amarilla is not a destination in itself. It is a comfortable place to sleep, have breakfast take a rest during the day, but if you expect a resort style stay, it is not for you.

A tasty breakfast of fruit, eggs, arepa and bread with orange juice and coffee to drink is included.

The clerks and housekeepers were so friendly and helpful. They would go out of their way to provide information, give recommendations and arrange excursions. They worked hard to make sure we had a great stay. (fyi to the best of my knowledge, the staff is not bilingual, so be prepared if you don’t speak Spanish.)

I enjoyed my visit immensely and would stay at the Casa Amarilla again on a trip to Mompos.

This is nicest place in a town of enchanted of places . You will feel like you are an honored guest in a local estate of times gone by. Everything is spotless. The staff is incredibly helpful and attentive. They can book you a river tour. English is spoken as Richard the owner is a renowned journalist in Columbia. His wife is local and the whole family makes sure to that you feel at home . I loved the breezy sitting room. The location is central with everything the town has to offer in walking distance. The place is super clean with hotel amenities such as shampoo etc. I hope to return soon! Thank you Richard it was a privilege staying at Casa Amarilla.

Very nice colonial house in front of river Magdalena at one very end of the town (but it’s no problem given the size of Mompox). The rooms have a window facing the inner courtyard, unluckily without window panes, so that if you want to have AC you have to close the blinds and it’s pitch dark. The furniture is basic, no closet, no fridge, no safe and no complimentary water. The mattress was too soft and the pillow too high. The bathroom is large enough with space for your toiletries, no glass for tooth brush, no hairdryer, the shower had no hot water and it tended to spray a little everywhere. AC works well (it’s only in the rooms but there are fans everywhere) and so does WiFi. Breakfast is served in the courtyard and you get a bowl of fruit, juice, eggs and tea or coffee. My eggs were very salted on the second day.

We stayed 3 nights and our party had 4 rooms. Ours was quite big but there was a second bed that we didn't need and our main bed was a bit too small. Our daughter who was alone in her room had a bigger bed for herself !
The house was very nice and located by the river.
There was no exterior chilling space and no hammocks. Only big interior rooms.
The breakfast was taken in the open air kitchen. There was no choice (only eggs, every morning) and the bread was stale.

Nice and beautiful hotel, but...

Casa amarilla is without any doubt a beautiful place to spend some days in Mompox. The colonial house with its patio, rooms and the two rooftop terraces is well designed and in a good shape compared to other hostels/hotels in Mompox.

BUT I do not share the overwhelming comments of the other travellers. Because a hotel is only as good as their staff.
We arrived in the morning and our room was not ready - which we knew would be the case and not a problem for us! But the two ladys in charge of the reception aparently had a problem with it. No welcoming words, no explanations about the town or the facilities, no map. Instead they would running around without talking to us, giving us the feeling of not beeing welcomed at all. On their website its said they have a kitchen for their guests, so we asked if we could use it for making our breakfast. One of the lady then hold a long Monologe that using the kitchen is not very welcomed as they had some Problems with previous guests and that we only can use it sometimes and we have to properly clean it up afterwards. She spoke to us as if we were chaotic teenagers, that don't know how to behave and that would ruin the kitchen. (Maybe because we're backpackers?) Also we were told not to use one of the Roof top terraces because we might disturb other guests sleeping in the room next to it.

We stayed in a room, that was supposed to be for Budget travellers. The room itself was nice, big and worth the money, but both TV and Toilet were broken, so we asked the ladies to fix it. Unfortunately it took them several reminders and 1 day to call somebody for the toilet. The TV we could never enjoy. Since our room was right in front of the kitchen, our night was over at 5:45 am when they started preparing breakfast. Some excusing words would have been nice, but they did not seem to care at all.
During the daytime, it is quite difficult to get any useful information about Restaurants, Busses etc as the reception is not occupied most of the time.

Maybe the success has already gone to the staffs head, maybe we just had some bad luck with given circumstances. But we were quite annoyed most of the time.

What a pity, casa amarilla! Hospitality is definitely not a strength!

Response from R N, Owner at La Casa Amarilla

Thank you for your comments regarding the Casa Amarilla, with a critique of this nature we will clearly look into your issues. Yes, the kitchen is for your use after breakfast hours as was explained, yes, you can use the roof terrace as was explained, yes, the transport info is all clearly displayed, yes, there are maps...I apologise for the delay in the repair of your toilet, things move slower in Mompos. How fast do repair men come in your hometown? I can assure you that success has not gone to our heads as we are still working on improving the establishment for all of our guests.

Clean and friendly with good sized rooms. Old colonial town with charming buildings.

Ran into the owner who is a wonderfully charming English gentleman. Great hospitality and thoroughly recommended.

The hostel has great location. It is located in the first row from river Magdalena, near nicely restored church, and within a pleasant, short walk to the town center. If you arrive by direct bus from Cartagena, the bus will make its final stop hundred meters from the hostel.
Casa Amarilla is tastefully restored colonial house. A lot of effort went into the restoration. Rooms on the main floor open onto a relaxing courtyard with flowers and other foliage. Another great feature is the roof deck. It was a nice place to sit in the evening, enjoy the cool breeze, have a beer with other travelers and enjoy the view of the illuminated church nearby and the thunder-less lightning. There is also new shared full kitchen with free coffee and optional breakfast on the main floor. The Wi-Fi was good and strong in the common areas but did not reach the dorm. One thing that the hostel was missing is a small pool.
I have seen three private rooms. All were very nice, fully renovated with modern bathrooms. Some had TV and air-conditioning. They were very clean, bright, had nice furniture and good quality white linen. The private rooms were more like those of a small boutique hotel than a hostel. They were also priced accordingly, higher than average and above average hostels in Colombia.
This review is for the dorm I opted to stay in. It seemed to be a very good value. With only three beds, it was the smallest dorm, in sense of number of beds, I have ever stayed in. Usually dorm of this size and layout would have five beds. The room was large and renovated with high ceiling, wall and ceiling fan and a private bathroom. Door and window opened onto the pleasant central courtyard. Although it was very hot and there were few mosquitoes in the evening, we had nice comfortable sleep without being bitten, even with the door and window fully open and with the ceiling and wall fan on. The beds were very good, comfortable, with clean white linen. Unfortunately, the bathroom was very dirty. There was a very large lump of hair, clearly visible on the wall even after the bathroom was “cleaned”. The cleaning involved emptying garbage and moping floor. Sink, toilet and the shower looked like they were not cleaned for weeks. The shower head was broken and it would have been much better showering without it than with it. After seeing the rest of the building it was hard to understand why this bathroom was like that. It felt like it did not belong to the rest of the building. Contrary to the advertisement, the dorms did not have lockers.
I met some interesting people there. The staff was very nice and helpful.
Mompox is very hot town with interesting character and very friendly people. However, it was the “weakest” World Heritage Site I have seen so far. But I was still glad to see it.

This section is about transportation: The biggest disadvantage Mompox and Casa Amarilla have is the remoteness. Mompox and Casa Amarilla may be nice and romantic places but the journey to get there is not. From my experience I can say that the journey to reach Mompox is being downplayed significantly in articles and websites I have read about it. The only way of reaching Mompox that I can recommend is with the direct seven hour bus trip from Cartagena.
Leaving Mompox to Bucaramanga through El Banco was quite different. The taxi colectivo to El Banco was a pickup truck with only a steel roof top covering seats in the back. The roads to Mompox are dirt roads through plains that are frequently flooded and thus very rough. By the time we left the town we were already covered with (and could actually taste) the fine brown dust from the streets. At one point one of the local passengers started vomiting. It took quite a while and yelling for the driver to stop. What followed was a verbal fight between the arrogant driver and the rest of the passengers over the way he drove. The guy was directed to switch seats; vomit over the back and off we went again. After 2.5 hours we arrived to El Banco. By this time my bag and I were completely covered with the fine brown dust. It was everywhere. My attempt to dust off and wash in the terminal did little to improve my appearance. It was not the beginning of my 15 hour journey to Venezuelan border I wanted. By taxi collectivo most people will understand a taxi or a minivan (as it is in other Latin countries). I feel that I should have been told what kind of transportation it was at the time of booking in the hostel. I would have been either better prepared for it or taken different transportation. For those who still want to take this route. It is a good idea to put your bags in a plastic bag, have a change of clothes ready and take a towel or another T-shirt to breathe through. I have noticed that another way of reaching El Banco from Mompox is by boat. Though likely slower, it will be much better way to travel. This trip from Mompox to El Banco was one of the most expensive I took in Latin America, considering the length and what you get for it. It is hard to believe that the locals also paid the 35,000 pesos for it. I was the only non-local passenger.
The day before my departure I met a couple in the reception area. They were waiting for their transportation for two hours. Plan accordingly….

I have never been in Colombia before and I had the most wonderful experience in my life. When we went with my wife to Mompos we stayed at Casa Amarilla in one of their suites. The attention we recieved was first class level. Carmen, the manager, was SO KIND with us, she helped us with everything. We even met the owners of the hotel, who are wonderful, and gave us great advises for out trip in Colombia. The bedroom was great, cozy, bathroom was very neat. And the breakfast was fresh fruit, natural orange juice, colombian cheese. :) I strongly recommend to stay here when you are in Mompos

We had a reservation, which the receptionist ignored and we were also told that they do not have a "colonial room" (as per homepage). So we had to stay in a shared room (we arrived late in the evening and did not want to look around for another accomodation). The next day they aplogised and we got an upgrade, but then they tooka away the remote control for the air conditon ("that is not included in your price" ?!?). In both rooms we found hair in the bathroom, that was definitely no from us and in one used tissues and dust under the bed. I am travelling a lot, but have never experienced a that unfreindly service. The inner yard and the rooms look nice, but better cleaning and friendly service should be included in the price. The staff does not speak English, only Spanish.

Response from LCAMompos, Owner at La Casa Amarilla
Responded 4 Sept 2013
I am very sorry that you have felt the need to write such a harsh criticism of the Casa Amarilla twice! The first time you complained about different things and the review was removed, and you promoted another hotel. This time, you are still complaining about the lack of English spoken. You are in Mompos, Colombia, this is like complaining that water is wet. We have scoured the books and checked records, emails, phone and so on and have no record of your reservation. We can only feel now that this is a "hate campaign" being waged by a competitor as it stands awry of every other review we have ever received in 6 years.
