Detailed Reviews
Just got back after staying for four nights at the brown horse hotel.
Two adults and 13 year old.
Have to say what a lovely place ,Julie and Benny were so welcoming and friendly.
Room lovely and clean, daily fresh towels, tea and coffee supplied.
Had breakfast every day great value and enjoyed, teenager is very fussy but made her toast and checked if they could make her something. Great start to our day.
We travelled around the area, mostly Beamish, great place and Durham, lovely day out.
Evening meals back at the Brown horse, again great meals and good value.
We will definitely return.

Called in with my sister in law to see if the coffee shop was open. We had not been before, and entered a large restaurant that was buzzing with happy people and had the most delicious aroma of Sunday roast dinners wafting throughout. A very friendly lady greeted us and we explained we were after a light lunch. I really thought we would be turned away, as this does happen from other places we have visited on a Sunday. She said find a table and we shall get you a hot or cold drink. She also asked did we fancy a hot roast sandwich? We sat down after placing an order at the bar (again lovely friendly staff) and 2 minutes later our host delivered us a hot roast beef bap with a few roast potatoes and a jug of gravy each. We were both in heaven and thoroughly enjoyed our light bite. After finishing we walked by the carvery station and all the food available looked very well cooked, was hot and smelled divine. We have promised ourselves a trip back for a full Sunday lunch. However, the warmth of all of the staff really elevated our visit to another level. The place was packed, understandably, people were really enjoying their experience and we also noticed dozens and dozens of meals all boxed up ready for takeaway. Thank you to the Brown Horse Hotel, you really do have the gift of hospitality.

We were told that we need not book a table unless the group was large. There was ample parking places at the back of the building although the snow was 10cm deep. Signs on the wall indicated the entrance for Sunday lunches. We were told we had to go past the carvery to the bar where we ordered our drinks and carvery meals. After paying we received two receipts. We took our drinks to a table then went to the carvery. A ticket for our meals was handed to the chef. A small plate was taken and the chef placed selected meat on our plate then it was self-service for vegetables etc. the restaurant was fairly full indicating it was a popular place. The meal was full of flavour. None of us asked for a dessert. We will definitely return to this hotel when we are in that locality

The accommodation was clean and the room was spacious. Toiletries are not provided other than a small bar of soap and new pillows are needed. On the plus side Staff were very warm and welcoming. Easy access from A68 and there was no disruptive road noise which was a plus

This is one of the best places ever for a Sundays dinner. It's consistent and gets so busy the problem with that is they do not put the staff on to keep up. One person serving drinks you wait half hour it's that slow. Put staff on the place has plates left all over as they can't keep up. It's greed in my opinion to pay staff

Arrived for Sunday lunch, staff very friendly on the bar.The guy serving the meat never spoke basically we just told him what we wanted. The carvery has plenty of choice of veg and is kept very hot. We all thought that the dinner didn’t have much taste at all. The gravy looked very nice but no taste at all. I asked if I could have a small carton so I could take our leftover meat home and was told sorry we don’t give takeout cartons. Clearly they do take out Sunday dinners. Anyway I was disappointed as it looked amazing but no taste.

We were celebrating our 50 th wedding anniversary with family and we were delighted with our rooms. We had a lovely meal there and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back there again. So handy for exploring Weardale, the villages are well worth a visit as well, Stanhope is an absolute delight,
