Reviews summary

Waterton Park Hotel offers a mixed bag of experiences, according to travelers. While some guests find the rooms spacious with stunning views, others describe their accommodations as dated and uncomfortable. The hotel's amenities, particularly the spa and leisure facilities, generally receive high marks for providing a relaxing environment, despite some grumbles about additional costs. The atmosphere is often seen as lacking vibrancy, with sterile spaces and dated decor. Cleanliness in the spa is lauded, but room maintenance sometimes falls short. Opinions on value vary, with praise for inclusive packages but criticism for extra charges and dining quality. The location is celebrated for its scenic beauty, although it is deemed remote by some. Service is usually well-regarded, with staff commended for their attentiveness, yet there are occasional reports of slow service.

Beautiful location with the hall located on the island in the centre of the lake which has stunning views across the countryside. We stayed the main hotel building but there was a lovely terrace outside Charlies bar where you could have a meal or just a drink. The food in Charlies bar was good and the staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was well decorated with a good shower and nice toiletries with bottles of still and sparkling water which were replenished on the 2nd day. One minor problem on the second morning, we hadn't finished our cereal and fruit and the waiter arrived with our cooked breakfast. He looked a bit stunned when we said we weren't ready ! All in all we had a lovely weekend stay and I would highly recommend it.

Points for location and staff, not much else

Similar to reviews below, this place seems to be entirely modelled around being a wedding venue; but if you’re there for another reason, there’s not a great deal to recommend particularly given the premium price it charges.

We stayed here for one night en route to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. We paid £152 for a superior room including breakfast.

The pluses are the location and the staff who are very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is in a lovely location and has taken full advantage of that as a wedding destination, with at least two or three taking place whilst we were there. However, possibly through Covid (but it looks like much longer) the hotel has clearly not much had investment so the rooms and bathrooms are tired and lack air-conditioning, mini-bar etc. There were also a number of small but irritating things that you’d expect of a cheaper hotel eg a short wire on a hairdryer that doesn’t allow you to properly use a mirror and no conditioner in the toiletries. Arguably these are small, petty things, but they’re charging top rates.

More importantly, there was often no internet access in the rooms: 3 or 4g was not available and the hotel wifi was terrible, often logging us out every 2 minutes (there was no way any business person could have worked there). We reported it to reception and there was an unsurprised response that they would get the connection point reset - if that happened, it made little difference.

We didn’t have dinner there, but did have breakfast. While it had a full range on offer, the quality was really mixed with anaemic looking pastries, undercooked toast and not great coffee.

If you are staying, we walked (20 mins) to the nearby New Inn and had a very good, value for money meal, which we would recommend.

We stayed at the hotel for a 4 day break in April, which was our first one since before lockdown. We arrived a little early, but were told that we could access the pool and leisure area whilst we waited for our room to be prepared.
There was a wedding at the hotel that afternoon, and there were some beautiful floral arrangements and decorations in the hotel, and it looked stunning. We never felt that we were in the way of the wedding party.
The reception staff were all very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. In fact everyone in the hotel, bar, restaurant and leisure made us very welcome and were lovely.
We had treated ourselves to an upgraded room, with the four poster bed, and we couldn't fault it. Very clean, and serviced every day.
The view to the front of the hotel was great, and being across the bridge, it was very quiet.
We swam and used the gym every day, and they were probably the cleanest, well maintained leisure areas we have used. Whenever we went in, there was always someone cleaning either the changing areas, or the pool/gym. Again, the staff were all great, and helpful.
We stayed on a B & B basis, and breakfast was a mixture of self service (cereals, fresh fruit, yogurts etc) then a good choice on the hot breakfast menu, which was served to your table, along with fresh toast, tea and coffee. It was always hot, and we didn't have long to wait for service.
We were lucky with the weather, and enjoyed some time sat out on the lawn area with a drink, watching the geese and ducks on the lake.
There is plenty to do in the area, and we will definitely be back.

On August 12th I sent a couple of friends who had just got married to spend two nights in this hotel. When they checked in they went to the room and saw that there were cobwebs everywhere, they went to the reception and let them know so they could clean. The lady at the reception asks them to go to dinner and the room will be ready when they arrive. When they returned, they closed the curtains and saw the spiders fall. They opened the bed and another spider came out. My friend went back to reception and asked to speak to the manager who told her that he had only one more room but that it was even worse than that one. Without a possible solution they left that hotel at 10.30pm to look for a hotel to sleep.

On my friend’s special birthday, afternoon tea was booked for 5 of us at £20 per head. We were shown to a table which was bare wood with no white tablecloth & was not set - not a good start. We expected china teacups etc but were given just breakfast style crockery. Only 3 plates of food were brought, not 5 as had been ordered. The sandwiches were uninteresting as all were made with white bread, no brown or granary, which again was disappointing. Having asked for 2 more food plates to be brought we were told we could only have sandwiches as they had run out of cakes & scones! We therefore had to cut the scones & cakes in half so that all 5 of us could share them. The 2 teapots of tea were inadequate & we had to ask & pay for more tea! And we were paying £20 a head for this.
This very unsatisfactory afternoon tea spoilt this special occasion so we won’t be coming here again or recommending it to anyone.
A complaining email brought no apologies or excuses, just that a referral would be made to management.

The location, on an island, in the middle of a lake, is stunning. Close to Wakefield, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Nostell Priory this hotel is in a great location.
We were accommodated in the old hall where the decor is in excellent condition, not dated or worn. The room was on a corner so had 2 windows. Beautiful views over the lake and gardens. Very clean and extremely comfortable bed.
We ate in Charlie’s bar 2 nights. Good menu and lovely food.
Every member of staff was friendly, chatty and good at their job.
Breakfast was plentiful with freshly cooked choices plus a buffet of cereal, fruit, yoghurts and pastries.
It was Easter weekend and there was a wedding every day we were there but this do not impact on our stay nor on the efficiency of the running of the hotel, bar or restaurant.
Would definitely visit again.
Beware - Easter is mating season so the Canada geese were very noisy! Ear plugs worked a treat.

What a lovely surprise to find this beautiful setting after the satnav directing us through the backstreets of Wakefield! No problem parking either, thankfully.

Everything about the day was executed with style, by a lovely professional team. Reception and checkout were efficient, our room was large and clean with a very comfortable bed. My only minor niggle was that the toilet cistern dripped for about half an hour after each time it was flushed.

The wedding ceremony was performed in the hall on the island and photos were taken outside - a lovely setting. The meal was served hot, which was impressive given the numbers involved, and everybody clearly enjoyed it.

The evening party was held in a the basement and entry was via door staff for guests’ security. Bar service was efficient, as was the buffet supper.

I would happily recommend this venue for a wedding, reception or other large party event.

My daughter recently had her wedding reception here with many of the guest’s including myself staying overnight. The venue itself is Beutiful and couldn’t fault the wedding breakfast. However just to make people aware the disabled facilities aren’t particularly good. Myself and my husband booked a disabled room due to me having multiple sclerosis the room in question was (Room 38) the room was dark & dingy with the bed been quite small, and whilst the bathroom was an acceptable size there was no mobiliity aid’s whatsoever. Been what was supposed to be a disabled room I’d have expected a chair/stool in the shower and something to hold on to around the toilet? Even the hand towel’s to dry your hand’s after washing them was at the other end of the bathroom. I really did expect better than that for a high end hotel.
The other thing was getting through door’s along the corridor’s was neon impossible to open by a wheelchair user unless you had someone with you!! Having said all that it was a great day that was enjoyed by everyone that attended. The view’s from the majority of the room’s are exquisite however the view from our room was horrendous with staff continually in and of the shed for supplies!!

This hotel is on a stunning location, beautifully situated on a private island! I had a minor problem with my first room and staff moved me very swiftly to a new room, which I greatly appreciated. It's fair to also comment that every staff member I encountered was professional and friendly - great service at breakfast and dinner! The facilities are also great and the vegan options were fab! My only comment would be to make sure that every room is updated to the standard of my second room which was modern, light and airy. My first room had slightly less updated decor and an old fashioned bathroom. Thanks for a great stay. We will definitely be back as we have business in the area.

My husband & I spent a night last week at Waterton Park hotel. The minute we walked into the hotel we fell in love with it. Unique in it’s own way as it’s on a small little island. Parking is free. Check-in was easy and quick. We were in room 18 which had a lovely view of the lake. Swimming, hot tub, steam room, Gym etc are included in the price which was great and pool has lovely views of the lake and it’s open until 9pm. We had dinner and breakfast which was very good. It has beautiful gardens. Staff are very friendly. We will certainly be going back. I would like to point out weekends might not be a good idea as it’s a popular venue for weddings. The hotel also has a 2nd hotel on the main land and do say that they cannot accommodate all guests on the island hotel so there’s a chance you may not get a room on the island. Before booking do check availability. We just got lucky and were not aware of this.

None of the rooms in Walton Hall, the original house, have balconies, sadly. Nor do those in the new hotel, as far as I know. Modern style rooms are in the new section but are away from the lake
