Pauntley Court must be one of the most enchanting houses in which to stay. It is said to be the birthplace of Dick Whittington, who travelled from here to become Lord Mayor of London four times over. Pauntley Court has beautiful formal gardens and is situated in a stunning position. The village of Pauntley is on the edge of the Cotswolds, two and half hours drive from London. Mark and Melissa offer luxurious private hire accommodation for family gatherings and special occasions in the main house, the wing of the main house (Elinor Fettiplace) and The Dovecote, sleeping up to 24 guests. We also offer weekend weddings from 30 up to 150 guests. Pauntley Court is a unique and magical place to come and relax and enjoy the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside away from the strains of modern day life.

We booked Pauntley Court for our intimate wedding weekend in June 2022 and we regret nothing! The venue is beyond beautiful with lovely, well kept gardens. The rooms are also very impressive, all individually decorated with their own character. All our guests commented throughout the wedding and since returning home about how lovely the venue was. Unfortunately, we weren't able to have our wedding outside as planned, thanks to the great British weather, but the team at Pauntley were so responsive, attentive and caring about swapping round our decorations to move us inside. We want to make a special mention to Rachel, who helped us throughout the weekend to keep the house clean and tidy and also cooked us an amazing breakfast on the Sunday morning. Also a big thank you to Rebecca and Melissa who were also fantastic, ensuring our day was perfect throughout. If you want a unique wedding venue, that no one will forget, book Pauntley court! We stayed in the Dovecote for a blissful three days. It was well appointed, comfortable and warm. Owner very welcoming. Set in nice countryside with some nice walks and plenty of places to eat in the area.

We had a fantastic 3 night stay early February in the Dovecote, set in a beautiful rural location but with good road links to visit the Cotswolds and Cheltenham. After looking at the photos on the website it’s even more delightful in real life. So much charm and character and plenty of space for four adults. Two gorgeous big bedrooms with very comfy beds and modern en suites. A cosy living room with log burner and kitchen area equipped with everything you may need. Thank you for the little touches Melissa, a generous hamper, fresh flowers and the new experience of an electric blanket to warm the bed on a cold February night! An amazing place to stay.

We are getting married at Pauntley Court later this year (fingers crossed!) and enjoyed a weekend stay in the Dovecote with my family to explore the place a little more ahead of the big day. Every experience and interaction we’ve had to date has been excellent and we are so impressed with the place. It is truly stunning, beautifully kept and the owners are so lovely. They have really taken the time to give us lots of information and answer our many questions. The wedding coordinator Holly has also been great, with an eye on the detail and contacts for top suppliers. I am an event coordinator and a perfectionist, so nervous about handing over the day to another person to oversee, but Holly has really put my mind at rest that everything will go as planned, so that I can properly relax and enjoy myself. We stumbled across this gem and I feel so lucky to be able to marry there.

We had our intimate Covid wedding reception at Pauntley Court. Melissa the owner was extremely helpful when we tried to plan this reception for 20 family members and she reassuringly observed all the government guidelines. The whole experience was so special from start to finish in the most elegant of surroundings! The house and grounds were pristine and we couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful venue for our reception! We were so happy we booked Pauntley and would highly recommend it without hesitation for the most magical day. Our memory of it will last a life time!

We had our intimate wedding at Pauntley Court in mid-September 2020. Melissa and her team went above and beyond to ensure everything went smoothly under these unusual circumstances. The whole weekend could not have been more perfect. The house and gardens are the most incredible place to have an intimate wedding and reception. Our guests enjoyed it just as much as we did. We made full use of the guest rooms in the main house, which are beautifully presented and very comfortable. We also had guests staying in the Dovecote and Elinor Fettiplace, which are separate to the main house with their own kitchens and bathrooms. The gardens are superb with an amazing stretch tent, which is perfect for sitting under no matter what the weather. Together with the surrounding countryside they make the perfect setting for a wedding and have resulted in some wonderful wedding photos! We are running out of superlatives to describe Pauntley Court. All that is left to say is that you would be hard pressed to find a better venue for a small, intimate wedding and reception. We cannot wait to return.

We, an extended family of 16— 8 kids and 8 adults, booked Whittington Manor, also known as Pauntley Court, through BigHouse Experience, which specialises in staycations. The manor was very pretty and as described (though teeming with spiders). However, this is not a child-friendly, or for that matter a family-friendly, place— not unless you are ok with losing a large portion of your deposit for negligible “damages” with no recourse or protection from BigHouse Experience. For our four-night stay, we made every attempt to be considerate guests—meeting with the owner, Melissa, almost daily as she was staying in an annex a few steps away from the Manor (even letting her know when we wandered onto a neighbour’s farm by mistake). We also hired a professional chef for our stay, who would come each morning and leave each night ‪at 10 pm‬, after thoroughly cleaning and mopping the kitchen. Additionally, we hired the manor’s own housekeeper, Rachel, for a daily 4-hour cleaning at 14/hr - our experience was that she barely cleaned— the bedsheets were never changed nor bathrooms cleaned, the common areas were neither tidied nor vacuumed.  Rachel spent most of her time in the kitchen complimenting our kids and regaling us with stories about the area.  Not once did the owner or Rachel indicate that they had any problems with us or our kids  — who spent most of their time in the kitchen drawing, going for bug hunts in the gardens, playing hide-in-seek in the manor, and making flower “perfume” with flowers and water. The adults went for walks daily and after chatting a bit in the drawing room, turned in by around 11 each night— this is all to say we were hardly a “rowdy” or “dirty” group as was implied subsequently in emails once we left the manor. Indeed, despite being very pleasant while there, within a day of our leaving we received an unpleasant and extremely nit-picky email about how there were “damages” to the tan natural-fibre carpet on the main staircase of the manor leading the bedrooms. It was implied that these small stains were made by the children’s “flower perfume”.  We did not notice these stains during our stay, nor did the manor’s own housekeeper, Rachel, ever mention these while we were there. The owner insisted on charging us £360 to replace a significant portion of the carpet. We had no option but to pay it as we had already left and could not verify anything. It’s baffling as to why the owner did not do the final walk-through with us while we were there, even though we met with her just before leaving. Nor did we insist on it as we trusted her to be above board. What was meant to be a relaxing family reunion after a really tough year, ended on an extremely unpleasant note with increasingly unhelpful emails from BigHouse Experience on behalf of the owner.  If you are booking, my suggestion is that you make sure you do a thorough walk through before and after check out— otherwise a disporportionate part of your security deposit will be kept for the most negligible of “damages”. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Whittington Manor/Pauntley Court, nor would we recommend it to anyone but an adult couple who want to spend a quiet few days in the country reading and relaxing We hesitate writing a negative review (and have never had to before), but feel this is something we wish we had known before booking. Holidays (especially these days) are meant to provide alleviation from stress, not add to it!

Response from Melissa Hargreaves, Owner at Pauntley Court
Responded 26 Sept 2020
Oh dear, we are very distressed and upset by this review, as we work extremely hard at ensuring the very highest standards are met and as such, I am so very sorry about how you felt about your stay with us. We appreciate your time writing this review and highlighting your concerns in such detail. Please accept our sincere apologies that your trip did not end up how you had imagined. I can understand how you might feel and react to having a small part of your damage deposit retained, something which we would never do, unless when absolutely necessary for something which has been irreparably damaged, to ensure that Pauntley Court remains at the highest of standard for our future guests. We thought very carefully about your deposit and did not take it lightly, when asking for you to pay for the damage incurred to the carpet during your stay with us. However, in response to some of your points made, I would just say that Rachel is an exemplary member of our team and is not only friendly, but also extremely hard working and diligent in her work. Also, I am surprised, as I would have thought if you were not happy with Rachel, that you would have said something to her or me about it, or indeed stopped using her each day of your 4 night stay with us, rather than telling us now about it in this review! If we, or indeed Rachel had known at the time, that you were dis-satisfied with her work then we could have done something about it. I can safely say, that Rachel has been used by many of our guests over a long period of time and she has only ever previously received the warmest comments of thanks and praise. With a view to keeping all of your comments made here, both balanced and fair regarding the damaged carpet, as you well know, through Big House Experience, you asked us to provide a full quote and detailed invoice for the work to be done, in order to replace the damaged carpet (just the area affected) along with photographs ‘pre’ and ‘post’ the work, including the ‘type of carpet being used’ and the ‘name & contact details’ of the carpet company, which we duly did. So we did not keep a 'disproportionate amount' of the deposit, and we were completely and utterly transparent with you about the repair, and we only retained the amount on the invoice (which you have seen), which was £360 for the materials and labour, and not a penny more. Furthermore, we have never had a requirement to claim on a deposit before, so as per your title to this review might suggest, there is no need for anyone to ‘beware’ of anything at Pauntley Court. Also, you might be unaware, but I think it only fair to tell you that we also spent a long time cleaning up the kitchen on the final morning after your departure (when Rachel wasn't employed by you). As we are being so open and honest here, and without wishing to over egg the point, the kitchen was left in the worst state we have ever seen by a group staying here, with plates, food, etc...left all over the sides, unwashed and nothing even put in the dishwasher, and all our four fridges left un-cleared with food in them. Other things like a lost croquet ball, beds left un-stripped, felt tip pen marks on the kitchen table and strangely all the cushions from our sofas left strewn over the sitting room floor, were other elements, which we decided to ignore at the time, when reviewing the return of your deposit. You are of course right though, we will certainly from now on, do a run through of the property before guests leave. Up until now we have become accustomed to our guests leaving the property in a reasonable state, similar to when they entered it and to raise any damage with us before they leave. But I can see that if you failed to notice the three large blobs of stain marks on the main stairwell, then I can perhaps understand your dismay when you received the email from our agent about the ‘damage’ deposit. I would also like to say that in our experience, Big House Experience is a professional and extremely well run operation and has been a great help in dealing with this sad and regrettable situation, and we thoroughly recommend them to anyone looking for houses to stay at for a family get-together, to escape from the stress and strains of life. I hesitate responding further to your ‘Poor’ two star comments (as I have never had to before), but more importantly would again like to re-iterate and stress how sorry we are about how it ended up, and for whatever reason, with Pauntley Court obviously not being right for you and your family. We wish you and your family better luck in finding somewhere else more appropriate and inline with what you are looking for on your next trip. I hope any new prospective families/groups/couples or otherwise, reading this review, will be able to also read the other 158 ‘Excellent’ five star reviews from previous guests, and see what we are really all about here, and make their own judgement. Finally, for the record, Pauntley Court is not “teeming with spiders”!! ☺

Summer holiday for an extended family of 13. I cannot imagine a more exquisite house and charming owners. The house was just beautifully furnished - well worn and sophisticated. The gardens are some of the best I have seen in a private house and well thought out spaces for reading, napping, playing croquet or just chatting with a drink meant each of us could do whatever we wanted at whatever pace we wanted. We had grand plans to explore the area, but we just couldn’t get ourselves to leave. Perfect country house.
