Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have only stayed here a couple of times but in general like the property. The rooms are good, some even with a nice balcony. The workout room is very good with several treadmills, bikes, etc... all you need and certainly more than you typical find in a hotel of this price range. The food and service at the courtyard is fine and is convenient. But the real difference is made by Nini from the front desk who is always very friendly and ready to help you with a big smile

My wife and I stayed there last September to get away from the kids for a night. Room was fine and it was inexpensive. Just tried to book another night there and now there's a bogus parking fee? It's a motel, not a luxury hotel in the city... I'll be staying elsewhere

Nice professional staff. Very pleasant at the front desk. Hotel lobby is nice. Rooms look okay and hallways are pretty dark and old. Internet quality is good. Parking is easily accessible and plentiful. Probably wouldn’t stay here again unless they renovate the facility.

Lovely hotel. Fantastic layout, great gym, nice rooms, friendly staff, well decorated, comfortable bed and great courtyard feature. I loved every minute of my stay at Sonesta and would love to stay at this location again.

Our group was attending our daughter's wedding and occupied over 50 rooms for two nights. We had previously booked a block of rooms at another nearby hotel. When we learned in July that our previous hotel, which had closed during the pandemic, would not open in time for our event, we had to scramble to find suitable accommodations. The Sonesta Select came through with flying colors.
The Sales Director, Giulia Racchi, did everything possible to ensure that our experience was everything we hoped for. She and Nini Sears, the Front Office Supervisor, re-booked the rooms for our guests and worked with us and the groom's parents to make sure everything was exactly as we planned. Giulia arranged transportation to and from the wedding venue and provided space for meals and an after-party.
The rooms and common areas inside and out were spotlessly clean. The hotel was refurbished in 2018 and everything looked brand new. Some of the rooms also had sofa beds convertible to twin or full beds, which were convenient for families with children or other extra guests.
During our stay, Giulia and the General Manager, Meagan, regularly checked with us to confirm that everything was meeting or exceeding our expectations.
Nini and Maria also contributed to the success of our weekend, and the housekeeping staff were the friendliest I've met in many years of traveling.
I wish we had time to use the gym, because it was far more extensive than 90% of hotel gyms.

After a stay of 16 nights and had not my room cleaned at all, I complained on this at the checkout. It seems that the policy is that the guest is in control when the room needs to be cleaned. Obviously this should have been told during the check in.

The receptionist gave me the managers card so I could adress the complaint to her. The receptionist was interrupting me all the time, nevertheless I was boiling inside I kept my kalm. When I pointed out that I was not pleased with her interrupting me she told met that there where other guests waiting. Well it was not crouwded at all (at 8am on sunday) she just did not like to hear what I had to say. Apparently I/it was not important, at least that was the feeling I had when I walked away from this useless conversation.

It apears to me that the hotel employees are not capable to be a good host.

If the room cleaning policy is that the guest should ask for a room clean this should have been told add check in which was not done. It might be good to lay a flayer in the room with this information as guest may be tired from a long journey and may mis the info at check in. For me I'm positive it was not addressed.

All things considered it is not likely for me to come back....

I needed a hotel room on short notice, and I was on a strict budget. This hotel was the best reviewed I could find for the money I had, and I was pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious, impeccably clean, and well appointed. While it was not "luxurious" per se, I wasn't paying luxury rates either. This is a fabulous value for the money, and I would highly recommend it based on that.

My husband and I unsuccessfully tried to find a hotel on Rt 10 in Whippany, NJ. The 4 or 5 we first tried were all sold out. The Sonesta was our last chance. The desk clerk,Nathan, was understanding and helpful. He had 1 room left. The room was very clean. The bed was very comfy. We were very happy.

This was my second stay here. First time was ok---typical courtyard marriott experience--clean room etc. This time, I did not make it in the door as I received an email at 4pm the day of my arrival that the hotel was in an overbook situation and did not have a room for me despite my reservation 2 months earlier. They set me up and were going to pay for a room at The Avenue in west orange (2 stars on trip advisor and was a "motel" not to mention an hour from my meeting the next day). for my inconvenience, the hotel gave me 5,000 marriott points. I declined their reservation at The Avenue and booked a hilton at the newark airport which was great but still an inconvenience as it was the closest hotel to my meeting and an hour from my meeting the next day. I emailed marriott corporate looking for points as a compensation from my bad experience and they referred me to the courtyard property who has since gone radio silent.

For the record, the property is fine---but the unprofessionalism and non-responsiveness was terrible. If you book there---are you confident that your room will be there when you arrive? Never again!!!!!!!!!!

Been to this hotel plenty of times before, but things seem to have changed. Gone is the old breakfast buffet, with its economical and generous offerings. This hotel now has a "Bistro", and we're back to heading elsewhere for breakfasts. But that's not what we found troubling.

We found a thick layer of dust on the back of the couch, bits of red wax in the carpet, bits of lint in the bathroom... and a sex toy in one of the bedside tables. Eeek. I'll be the first to admit, this is not what I'd expected, and I don't expect anyone else to find this, either.

Beds were comfortable if a bit soft; TV was rigged so it wouldn't allow any hookups to anything like a game system, DVD player, etc. In between all of these issues, we're having second thoughts about keeping this hotel as one in which we regularly stay.

Response from HanoverCourtyard, General Manager at Sonesta Select Whippany Hanover
Responded 28 Mar 2012
Dear Hildemar, Thank you for your feedback as it provides a learning tool for our property. I am truly sorry about the condition of your room and can assure you this will be followed up with our staff. Our housekeeping team takes much pride in their work and they would be very disappointed, as am I, in your experience at our hotel. I have posted points to your Marriott Rewards account and I invite you to contact me at the hotel to address the issue personally. I hope you choose to consider returning to our property so we can provide you with a better experience. Thank you again for your comments. Warm Regards, Matt Garber General Manager
