Kurhula Wildlife Lodge is situated on the banks of the always flowing Olifants River in Balule, Parsons Nature Reserve. Balule Private Nature Reserve borders the Kruger Nation Park. Most of the fences between the Kruger Park and bordering private nature reserves have been removed so animals can move around freely. From Kurhula Wildlife Lodge you can acces the Kruger Park for a day trip via the Phalaborwa ((1 hour drive) or Orpen gate (1.5 hour drive). Kurhula Wildlife Lodge is particularly valued for its high personal service, excellent home cooked cuisine and beautiful surroundings. Our aim is not to show our guests the Big Five, but to educate them about the synergy between animals, flora and human being. The best of ‘in the heart of nature’ in combination with western comforts, contributes to a unique experience!

I spend 3 nights with my wife at Kurhula Wildlife Lodge. I must say that the highlight of this place are the owners Sander and Kim. They are excellent host and make yourself feel at home. They arranged the game drive and a daytrip to Kruger. They are also great cookers. The

We stayed at Kurhula for two nights on the second stop of our visit to the greater Kruger area. The rooms are all situated such that the sliding door and small deck face the Olifants River. We had monkeys roaming right in front of us multiple times. The beds were comfortable,

Dear guest, Thank you for your honest and good review. We are glad you had a good time at Kurhula and that you enjoyed the environment. We are very happy to let you know that a piece of new road has been created, replacing the terrible hill just after the entrance gate. We are also re-painting all the walls and are re-varnishing the slate tiles in the rooms to make them look as new. Please know that every guest should have a choice to eat separate or in a group. We have talked to our staff and made sure this question is always asked on arrival. Kind regards,

Loved remoteness and the river view. Small units, calm, suitable hosts; giraffes + elephants + kudus + nyalas + ... closely seen around. Take the bush walk with Johann, very exciting and competent. Safari Drive through Krueger well organized but distance to gates 1,5 hours.

Thank you for your good review of our lodge. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Regarding the gate distance, it is mentioned on all our sites that the Phalaborwa gate is a 1 hour drive and the Orpen gate a 1.5 hour drive. It depends on the safari company and the wishes of the guests which gate you will enter and through which gate you leave. It can be Phalaborwa in and out. Phalaborwa in and Orpen out, or Orpen in and out.We know it is a very long day and I have discussed with the staff as well at the safari company that they should inform and discuss with the clients what they want, to make sure it lives up to the clients expectations.

Hi, our lodge is situated in a reserve that is home to the Big Five and open to the Kruger National Park. We take our guests on game drives to find the animals for them, but we cannot guarantee you that you will see them. It is not a zoo. We love educating our guests about the small things as well. Why we need insects, what certain calls of birds mean, why certain animals live in each other's company, Besides that we do not have a standard amount of rangers and vehicles going out every day. Sometimes we drive around as the only vehicle and the lions can be miles away from the game drive vehicle. Going into the Kruger Park will also not guarentee you to see the Big Five. I know plenty of people who did not see lion, leopard or rhino on their whole trip in SA, It also depends on the time you will stay in a nature park. The more days you spend in the wild the better chance you have on seeing animals. If you do not have much time, say 2 or 3 days I recommend you book your stay in a reserve that is fenced in, so they know how many animals they have. Or book at a big lodge where they have plenty of rangers going on a drive and communicating with each other. I hope you will find suitable accommodation and that you have a great holiday in South Africa

Hi Mikey, Kurhula is situated in Parsons Nature Reserve which is on the northern side of the Olifants River and part of the Balule Nature Reserve. Balule Nature Reserve consists of several smaller reserves (like, Balule Olifants West, Balule York, Balule Maseke, Balule Parsons etc) There are no fences in between these smaller reserves and between Balule and the Kruger National Park. Kurhule has their own open game drive vehicle and qualified rangers and they offer morning and afternoon game drives for 3 hours each. Because there are no fences animals can walk around in a huge space. Although not always easy to spot we are situated in a Big Five area. The fact that Kurhula is situated at the river gives you a big change of spotting wildlife while relaxing in the pool, sitting in front of your room or on the viewing deck at the river. So spotting animals does not stop when the game drive is over :-)
