We loved the mountains surrounding the Retreat, swimming near the dam in the natural pool, walking to the rock pool and enjoyed the nice food and excellent service. We are ever so happy that we stayed for four nights and could have done with more. Thanks to Marie and Grant and staff!

The Retreat is 20Km along a good dirt road from Calitzdorp. Marie and Grant run a very relaxed ex-farm situated in the Swartberg mountains. It is a lovely place with pleasant walks and relaxed hosts. The room was fine, the food (taken all together at a long table overlooking the garden) is excellent. There are no night clubs, noisy youngsters,...

For the third time in fifteen years, my wife and I spent a couple of nights at this wonderful guest house amongst the Swartberg mountains. Grant and Marie are still most welcoming and kindly hosts, and the evening meal when all the guests eat together is a great way to meet fellow travellers and exchange tales of their travels in...

This was our second trip to the Retreat ( one of our fellow guests had been eight times!) and it was as delightful as ever. Swimming in the dam, following the trails and dining with the other guests was as good as ever. Marie and Grant looked after us very well and it will be the first place on our...

This place really is a retreat, miles from anywhere along a long gravel and dirt road - do not be put off although don't tell your car rental firm about it! . The setting is very attractive and peaceful though and a perfect way to unwind. There is no mobile phone reception so be prepared to relax! The trails by...

This is wonderful retreat miles from anywhere which is what makes it so special. No light pollution so the stars are stunning. Maria and Grant make you very welcome to your accommodation, which is very comfortable and considering they generate all their own power, very well specified. Meals are a communal affair set on the 1901 veranda, which are stage...

Hi Marie and Grant. We are the 2 motorbike cyclers that arrived too late at half past six in the evening at this wonderful peaceful place in South Africa. And we had only one night to stay there. Thank you for the help of Grant with the professionell plug on the tyre. Otherwise we couldn´t go further and would stand...

Have just spent a very relaxing and enjoyable 3 nights at The Retreat. Excellent food and service and interesting meal times spent chatting to other guests, as all dine at long table together on the open veranda. Accommodation very comfortable and wonderful bird life. In fact, can't fault this place and want to return for more.

It was our second visit by Mary and Grand and we spend a wonderful time with other interesting guest at the retreat. We love the remote area with its colorful birds, mountain and very good signed trails. Mary and Grant advised us to go to the "Oude Postcontoor" (open at weekend) and the Peter Bayly vineyard (5 km) and we...
