Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

My wife, dog and I stayed here for 2 days/nights. We used it as a base to explore the area including Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby.

It's easy to get to Whitby on the train; the station is right outside. You can change to NYMR steam railway at Grosmont when it's running in the summer months.

The room was OK, a little dated in decor and bathroom, but comfortable and clean. Dog-friendly & you're given a key to open the side door if your dog needs to do the essentials at night. There's a TV and tea/coffee-making in the room.

It's above a pub/restaurant, but there's no noise to hear in the rooms.

Breakfast is cooked to order and is excellent.

Dinner is a choice from the main menu which is of good quality, if a little pricey. The main criticism was that there were no chicken dishes, so my wife (who doesn't eat red meat) was confined to fish. Quality was very good, as was the presentation.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

We stayed here while doing the Coast to Coast Walk as an alternative to the more traditional stop-over in Grosmont. We were glad that we did.
The pub itself has a very friendly atmosphere with great service from all the staff. There was a well kept beer garden to the front that was full of flowers and a pleasure to sit in. The interior is decorated in a traditional style with great quirky touches.
We had been told to make sure we were hungry as the food was very good and we weren't disappointed. The evening menu was a breath of fresh air after nearly two weeks eating in various pubs - the seafood was especially fine and worth every penny.
I would not hesitate to recommend the Postgate Inn to anyone visiting the area and I would most definitely stay there again. Thank you for a great night.

Stayed at the postgame a few times over the years, this time for my Birthday, very nice to feel welcomed here, lovely welcome by Andy who works very hard & always polite and helpful, we had a nice room with fresh crisp clean bedding & big fluffy towels. Hospitality tray etc topped up on request due to Covid & no toiletries so take your own, Shower nice & hot, room cosy & warm so nice to return to on an evening to watch t.v, bed really comfy and warm.

We love the bar which is most warm, cosy and friendly with lots of character, Covid rules in place.
Great to see the same owners and staff here, Tony the breakfast chef still here after many years cooks a cracking breakfast absolutely just right, love little peanut the family’s jack Russell.

The postgate has a lovely nicely kept beer garden and the whole place apart from the restaurant is Doggy friendly which is great, our little dog loved it, the owners daughter Zoe made a lot of fuss of him and they clearly all love having your furry friends to stay, there’s plenty of walks nearby or a short ride to the coast away.

We stayed on the winter warmer deal which we thought to be very good value for money, includes a two course evening dinner bed & breakfast, the food was amazing, we paid extra for the steak which my husband said it was the best he has ever had, the lamb noisettes were to die for!

expect a lovely warm atmosphere here, muddy boots kids & doggies welcome! Good beer, excellent food, warmth & cheer, we all need some of that at the moment. Thank you all at the postgate inn for another lovely stay. See you next time.

Booked a friday night meal for two choose bar area instead of restaurant as last visit only ones in the resturant.
Wasnt told on arrival or befor booking there was a Darts match
In the bar that evening.
Would have booked saturday.
The pub has changed. The food was poor .We ordered goats cheese brusshetta. It was a very small
Starter although quite nice but at £8 over priced.
We had already decided on a steak
befor we arrived so ordered two
Medium rare fillet steaks. Not cheap in fact most expensive steak iv paid in a long time.
Being in the country we thought local beef must be good so was prepared to pay.The steaks were
Awful and we sent them back.
They were replaced and apologised
For the mistake in cooking .
The second steaks were not much better. They didnt resemble fillet
Steaks at all more like old rump.
They had no flavour at all.
They came with too many side orders we think to make up for the terrible steak.Very dissapointing. The staff very friendly and tried to help but the evening was so expensive and
Not enjoyable.Would not eat there again.

We visited today for Sunday lunch, the pub and restaurant were very busy, covid restrictions adhered to from both diners and staff. We both had the Sunday roast, I chose the lamb and my fiancé the beef. Both dishes served were absolutely delicious, excellent meat, vegetables, Yorkshire puds, mash and roast potatoes, gravy boat too. Deserts were stunning, delicious gingerbread and toffee apple pud with custard and chocolate fondant and ice cream. Generous portions, lovingly prepared and extremely good staff who were very efficient and friendly. Definitely we’ll worth a visit if you are in the area, excellent value for money. Thank you so much!

The England game was playing so the restaurant was unsurprisingly very quiet! The staff were all very friendly (keeping us up-to-date on the score!) and for the most part we enjoyed the food. My fish was slightly undercooked but they couldn't have been more helpful in making sure this was addressed. My husband particularly enjoyed his soup and my dad praised his goats cheese starter. It is perhaps slightly pricey for what it is (like a lot of places in the Yorkshire Moors) as it wasn't far off the cost of a Michelin Star restaurant's a la carte menu.

My partner, family and friends had a truly special day at the Postgate Inn on Saturday 11 July. Mark and his staff team were so accommodating, friendly and helpful. I was in contact with Paige, staff at the Postgate, over a number of weeks planning a 2-course meal for friends and family as a celebration after my partner of 18 years and I finally got married at Whitby Registry office. Paige was really instrumental in making the day special for us: adapting the menus to suit dietary requirements and tastes, and suggesting starting the proceedings with a champagne reception for our guests. We were lucky with the weather and spent a glorious afternoon in the garden before taking our seats in the restaurant for our delicious meal. Later, people either spent the rest of the evening drinking and talking outside while others danced the night away in the restaurant where the staff had kindly moved the tables back for us. A number of guests also took advantage of the bed and breakfast accommodation which they said was lovely. Just brilliant, thank you; everyone had such a great time.

Heard the reviews about this place and had to make a beeline for it after visiting Mallyan Spout . I have to say what a beautiful establishment and how professionally run it was . Our experience from the moment we entered to the moment we left was exemplary. I didn't catch any of the staffs names but the three we saw made everyone feel welcome . Some may find it a little pricey but I'm a great believer in you get what you pay for . I had the fillet steak, mushroom, onion and tomato baguette with chips a lovely salad and homemade coleslaw . My wife had the fried chicken Barby baguette with the same sides . . I would thoroughly recommend it .

First came across The Postgate while on a walk earlier this year & noted it down for a future visit. Took the opportunity to make this happen when we saw the Winter Special Offer & booked in for 2 nights dinner, bed & breakfast. What brilliant value! The inn is cosy & homely & the food is incredible. Fabulous dinners - spoilt for choice, amazing flavours, great local produce, beautiful presentation & generous portions. Breakfasts too were hearty & cooked to perfection. What a treat! Whilst our room could do with some general upgrading, everything was clean, we were perfectly comfortable & slept very well. All Covid measures are in place & remember to bring your own shower gel, etc. Location is ideal for exploring the NY Moors & very peaceful. Thanks to everyone at The Postgate for the lovely warm, friendly, relaxed welcome & service. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & can’t wait to return. Cheers all.

We enjoyed lunch in the garden on a sunny day. This is a nice quiet spot next to the Egton National Rail Station. We enjoyed fish and chips between the two of us- we saw the generous portion size served to other customers. Everything on the plate was good. Interesting menu- it would be good to explore it. Everyone had come out for the sunshine and the barman/waiter was under pressure. He managed to keep us and the other customers happy with very good service.

For a drink or food yes. Doubt if they would be happy for yo to stay. Having said that one of their bedrooms opens straight into the garden.

if there is it would be very slow - rather like the service you get. It is in a rural location.
