The Inn at Charlestown enjoys a reputation for its welcoming vibe and modern decor, making it a sought-after spot for celebrations or unwinding. Guests appreciate the picturesque setting and praise its prime location for sightseeing. While the rooms boast modern comforts and scenic views, some visitors have noted occasional heating and hot water issues. Service is typically highly regarded, though not without some minor delays. Cleanliness is a standout feature, with particular commendations for pristine bathrooms. Opinions on value are mixed; the well-regarded amenities are sometimes contrasted with dining costs that some guests find steep.

We didn't stay at the hotel but popped in for breakfast.

As you see everywhere now on entry into the restaurant there was a sign asking everyone to sanitize their hands.

When we arrived just after 9:30am the restaurant appeared to be very busy and we were asked if we had booked, we weren't aware you had to book for breakfast as I didn't read anything on the website to that effect however the waitress went to check and it was okay. Apparently they were busy as the hotel had had a wedding the day before and all the rooms had been booked out.
By the time we were seated there were only a couple of tables occupied with the remaining wedding guests.
We were given menus and offered tea or coffee and our order was taken.
Tracy, the waitress was extremely efficient and very friendly chatting as she cleared all the tables.
Breakfast was excellent, eggs cooked to order, bacon, haggis and beans were a good size portion and the food was hot and the coffee was very good as well.
As we were leaving Tracy asked us if we would like a quick tour of hotel and the function suite which was being set up for another wedding that day, the new owners have made a lovely job of the renovations and there are further plans to open up the restaurant a bit more with patio doors onto decking which with the views will be stunning.
We will definitely be back and I would highly recommend a visit to the The Inn at Charlestown.

Hogmanay 2022 celebrations

We decided last minute seeking for New Year’s Eve Venue and most places were fully booked and some were inoperative due to covid restrictions. At last “ The Inn” - Charlestown - By Dunfermline- managed to book us in due to their last minute cancellation.
This is a magnificent Inn set back and snugged in a small village surrounded by beautiful garden. On arrival we were welcomed with a glass of champagne and selection of canapés and ushered to our function room where DJ was already entertaining live music. The atmosphere was serene and soon our appetite was filled with four course pre booked menu, food was delicious and amazing. Fun began after the meal with DJ’s music soon filled the dance floor. The entertainment ran full swing non stop into the countdown to celebrate Hogmanay. Management staff Tina and Kevin couldn’t do enough and with their generosity served us with further free glasses of champagne. The atmosphere was dynamic and vibrant and we all thoroughly enjoyed it till early hours of morning. Made new friends, some from Kenya.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the for their service and hospitality.
PJ, Amelia and Girls.

We have just got back from a short overnight stay at this lovely hotel. We wish that we’d chosen to stay more than one night as it was so lovely! The staff were so friendly and made such a fuss of our little dog who was very spoilt during his stay with treats and attention. Location is perfect and so quiet, lovely for a walk along the harbour and around the little village.

We also ate in the restaurant on the evening and the food was lovely and very reasonably priced. Drinks were also well priced and there is a really nice outdoor seating area to enjoy the sun.

Hotel and restaurant were both immaculate. It’s so lovely to be able to take our dog with us to such a lovely place, we are already looking at dates to come back.

Thank you so much to all the staff for making our stay so wonderful and relaxing.

This is a lovely little venue and the new owners have clearly made great efforts to make the premises aesthetically pleasing. We live in the area so we’re always pleased to find somewhere new we can consider for a lunch or dinner out. The sea change in appearance is quite remarkable and makes the venue a pleasure to visit.

We are keen to spend local and it is important to us that local businesses succeed but there is still some work to be done if the Inn is to match up to the competition and compete for a share of the trade….and keep people coming back.

We both had steak pie which was delicious but I’m afraid the chips weren’t great - too thin and slightly over cooked, as were the vegetables. The mains were competitively priced but I’d almost rather pay a little more to lift the standard of everything on the plate. We tried the sticky toffee pudding and crumble, which we both thoroughly enjoyed.

There were a lot of young staff, very friendly and polite but, seemed to be lacking in direction/coordination. We must have been attended to by at least 6 different staff, the service swinging between between being asked twice if our order had been taken to having to ask ourselves to see the menu to order a pudding - despite the gentleman clearly in charge having taken our main course plates away and walking past the table a good number of times afterwards. We noticed other tables were having to call on staff for service and tables were lying dirty for a while before being cleared. We were bemused as to why tables were being set in full, including wine glasses, for only half of it to be used. This seemed like a lot of unnecessary dish washing and setting up and clearing when the staff were already challenged to stay on top of what is going on.

Overall the experience was good enough and we will be back and we look forward to seeing the business progressively flourish as it irons out some of the areas for improvement.

We didn't stay in the Hotel, but I had made a reservation for the two of us to have our 'night out' and when we arrived, the person who took the reservation and read it back had forgotten to add it to the book. While we were standing in the bar, the staff were trying to work out where they could put us... all this in front of us. Eventually they offered a table in the part of the restaurant where you had to walk through to get to the bar or other tables. We just left. Bit of a downer after arranging dog sitting etc so we could get out for the night. I did email and tell them about the experience, and was offered a free glass of wine... not everyone is a drinker.

Roll on a few months (for a second chance) and we arrive with friends, get seated and place our order - there's only 4 of us. The two gents ordered starters, they arrived, then 45 mins later I had to ask where the main meals were, as I noticed other tables that had been empty but filled whilst we were waiting received their food before us.
I'd asked what the bistro salad was, no-one could tell me, so I ordered it anyway. When the main meals arrived, the two fish dishes were warm, the veg (that I didn't order) was cool and the bistro salad arrived in a wee bowl (I'd asked for the salad rather than the veg. My husband's chicken pasta dish was dry, the chicken pieces were sitting under the heap of pasta, very little sauce. Whilst Tom's dish arrived with vegetables that he hadn't ordered and had to ask for the chips that he had.

All in all a very poor experience x 2. Such a shame as it looks amazing, but it's chaotic, the service is poor and no matter what you order, you may not get it, whether it's late or not.

No, we won't be going back.

1st time visit for us and what a wee gem of a find . Sadly it was only an overnight stay but will definitely be returning for longer very soon . 1st of all we felt completely safe re Covid no issues there whatsoever. Our room was lovely tastefully decorated and spotless with stunning views of the forth bridges . The bed was so comfortable which is a bonus . After we checked in we headed downstairs to the bar to kill some time till our lunch booking . The bar was decorated very tastefully and was quite quaint and comfortable. We then moved to the restaurant area for lunch which was absolutely delicious my husband had the haggis pakora which he said was the best he’s ever had. I had prawn cocktail which again was fresh plentiful and delicious. Hubby then had Cajun salmon and I had nachos again all delicious. Our evening meal that we pre booked our table and thank god we did because it was really busy and the amount of times people either phoned up or turned up on speck and had to be turned down tells me a lot about the quality of the food in restaurants and after an amazing fillet steak dinner for both of us we were not disappointed. Breakfast in the morning didn’t disappoint either. From start to finish all the staff we came across from check in check out reception to the waiting staff at lunch Dinner and breakfast all very friendly very professional and it was just overall a very relaxing enjoyable experience and we’ll definitely be returning.

Having lived in the adjoining village of Limekilns for 10 years, I was so excited when the old Elgin Hotel was taken over. The old management had clearly fallen out of love with the place, and with hospitality in general, so it wouldn’t take much to improve it.
Superficially, the new owners have done a great job, and I commend them for bringing new customers to the area, but they clearly have no interest in the local clientele. The menu is dated and there is absolutely no consistency in the quality of the food. The turnover in staff is astonishing, and the lack of basic training shows how little interest they have in improving things.
The good reviews belie the full story, in that it is relatively easy to impress once, but much more difficult to maintain a consistent standard. The management obviously believe their own hype and are basking in their current “ honeymoon period”, however the reluctance of locals to return shows the full picture. There is an arrogance and complacency to the service which I’m sure will eventually undo all of the good work done, which is very sad as there is so much potential here.

Review for the restaurant not the hotel

We had been here before and it was lovely. However, we went for a light lunch yesterday and we were so disappointed. We chose the sandwich and salad option with chips. When ordering I said no onion as it makes me ill. When it arrived the "salad" was chopped onion, peppers and lettuce. No cucumber or tomatoes. The bread was the kind you can buy for under £1 a loaf at the supermarket! When I said about the onion, my plate was taken away and the person didn't seem pleased about it. A new plate was brought to me with the sandwich, chips and lettuce -no other bits of what you would expect in a salad. A rip off at £9.25!!

We've just got back from a great couple of days at the Inn at Charlestown. We booked into a family room with our (large) dog, while my partner's parents took a deluxe sea-view room. Rooms were fresh, clean and spacious, staff were friendly and well-informed and food was tasty and served in lovely surroundings. We were really grateful for the friendly accommodation of our pup's needs, and found the area perfect for him (opposite a large green, a grassy path down to the harbour and near the beach). In general the area is great with lots to see and do. Would definitely recommend and hope to return in future!

Booked for a birthday treat. When booking asked for room with a view over Forth. Was told when we arrived we couldn’t now get that as guests get priority. The place wasn’t even full. Young girl serving was left to do everything , we felt sorry for her as she was serving at the bar, welcoming guests and waitressing. We were put on a table t the door. Asked to move as no heating on and the place was freezing. Moved to another table which wasn’t much better. Someone else came in asked if they could get a table and were shown to,where we wanted to go. Our table infested with little flies, table behind had a huge bowl on the table catching the water from leaky, stained ceiling. After ordering waited about 25 minutes for food. One meal was ok, the steak pie, my daughters chicken and haggis wasn’t great with the chicken pink in the middle. My burger was tasteless, certainly didn’t taste or look homemade. Customer service wasn’t great no attention to,customers. When asked if the meal was ok said it wasn’t great, just ok but nothing said to apologise. We will not to back. The place is in a beautiful setting but the whole experience was chaotic, place is run down, tables dirty and not somewhere I’d recommend.
