Fothergill Island has re-opened on the 1st of August 2021 after an extensive refurbishment program and aims to maintain the rich traditions and history of the island. The inspired design and refinement of the new tented structures embrace pastel colour tones that are a delicate spectrum of olive greens, lily pinks, turquoise blues and chic yellow hues that encompass two unique and intimate camps blending in and out of one another as one and are both gathered around large sitting, dining, library, bar and pool areas that are perfect for relaxation and subsequently melt into the surrounding natural environment, that is a mix of lake, mopani forest and the large floodplains of Matusadona National Park. The overall atmosphere of the camp is cool, light and airy, in keeping with the beauty of the environment and taking inspiration from the profusion of lilies populating our central eco-pond. The wildlife and environment across the lake, flood plains and into the mountains of the Matusadona National Park are so diverse and boast enormous concentrations of plains game and predators, that land and water activities conducted by foot, on vehicles or boats can deliver an all round truly African safari experience.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's hard to review this place without reaching for superlatives. The attention to detail is amazing, and clearly a lot of thought has gone into the design and operations. For example, every tent has its own bird bath and jar of bird seed - an easy thing to offer that really enriches the experience, as the place is full of interesting bird life. We stayed two nights, which was just about enough to experience a flavour of everything on offer, but another night would have been good. A boat trip to Sanyati gorge is a must, with dozens of crocodiles just a metres from where we fished. For me, the highlight was the guided walk with Adam and Jasper, and we tracked fresh lion prints in a meandering sandy riverbed. We had several close encounters with elephants while on foot, but felt very safe with the guides. Another highlight was the evening sundowners on the lake shore - watching kingfishers hunting, and then bats emerging from a hollow tree after sunset. In comparison to other camps we visited in Zimbabwe, this place is more groomed and less "wild" - fenced to protect the many new trees from the elephants and its watered lawns look nice but also prevent dust blowing around. The overall impression of Matusadona is a park that is on the good trajectory, well-managed with wildlife being reintroduced (cheetahs next apparently). Now, is not busy and has few lodges, but this will change, so get there soon if you can. It fits well as a place to stop between Victoria Falls and Mana Pools, and has its own airstrip.

The worst part of the visit to Fothergill Island was having to leave. We stayed for 4 days, and it has been the best thing we have ever done. The care and attention to detail that the team puts in is exceptional. There is full freedom to do a range of amazing activities, and we did multiple fishing trips and game drives, that just kept getting better and better. We were looked after so well by Fothergill staff, continuously fed by a team of talented chefs and learned a great detail from very experienced guides. There was never a moment the next beer was more than 2 meters away and having a glass of Amarula while watching elephants is a must! Its obvious these guys are passionate about their work and its reassuring that some of your fees go towards conservation too. When you consider everything available to you, it makes the visit exceptional value. I highly recommend you come see for yourself. Can't wait for next time. Henry and Georgie

Thank u to Adam and an incredible team for the most amazing stay at Fothergill! Service and attention to the tiniest detail was phenomenal! Adam, Lionel, James, Wayne thank you… game drives were off the chart! Your knowledge of not only the animals but birds, plants and tiny little creatures was awe inspiring… making each and every game drive so very special! Of course the lioness and her cubs feasting was more than enough to fill the soul, but then the next day we were privileged to see the male lion in all his glory! One cannot forget to thank Oscar and Shorty for the most delicious food! Every single meal! Thank you!! Morris, Richard and Graham for pandering to us like royalty! Mike and Woody..: great fishing as always, professional boatmanship and a rod ready at every turn and snag! Thank you! I hope I have not left anyone out… but thank you to those staff we don’t get to meet who work tirelessly behind the scenes! We thank you! We will be back!!!

We really cannot put into words how thankful and grateful we are to have chosen Fothergill as our wedding location. Jono and the team are beyond special, and we were just totally blown away. Their kindness and pure care are reflected in every decision made. We really do thank your team from the bottom of our hearts for making our day truly special, something we only thought we could dream of. I wish every person in the world could experience what Fothergill has to offer… it is truly a magical experience. Adam and the guides are so professional, friendly and warm with their guiding and knowledge. The food is absolutely stunning, and the drink selection is like nothing you’ve seen before. If you’re even thinking about booking this place, your mind should be made up… please please go. You will not regret it, I promise! The game is totally amazing and so wild. Everything you can imagine, Fothergill have thought of and have gone the extra mile with it. A special mention to Jono who worked above and beyond for weeks/months before we arrived and during our stay to ensure it was perfect. Our family and friends had an experience of a lifetime and we thank you for providing this for us. We will be 1000% be back! Thank you again. Love Hayley & David
