ZOV is about an hours walk out of Stone Town but has everything you need especially good air conditioning.

African checklist: Working toilet √ [all accessories present]; running water √; hot water √ [give it an hour or two to heat up]; clean bed √ [spacious and beautifully arranged in room 109]; electricity in room √; mosquito netting √; WIFI √√√ [best I’ve seen in East Africa – must have a high bandwidth pipe]; restaurant √ [well done and beautifully situated over the beach]; bar √ [wine and beer only, that I could see]; secure rooms √; in-room safe X. Caution: slippery, clean floors.

ZOV came to get our group of Nomad travellers at the ferry dock in a wonderfully air conditioned bus and the good treatment continued throughout. Apparently, there had been some violence in Zanzibar around the presidential elections two months previously so there weren’t a lot of other tourists around. ZOV was sparsely populated, but undeservedly. Thus, they could focus on us.

ZOV is right on a nifty beach that abuts the warm-water Indian Ocean. By “warm,” I mean tepid; your shower will be cooler. When you go down there, ZOV’s security souls will show up to keep an eye on you and warn you not to go wandering down the beach. The people I encountered were friendly, curious and absorbed with playing soccer on the sand. Pretty good at it, too.

Uphill and to the north is the restaurant/bar perched over the beach where it catches the breeze. About 10 of us ordered various items and all came our perfectly done. I recommend the pizzas. Service was perfect and the beer, wine & water chilled properly for Europeans.

From the hotel, excursions downtown can be arranged for about US$15 or so. These turned out to be well worthwhile. The slave trade is well covered, plus the local markets, restaurants and the black market (after hours). It will take about 3 – 3 ½ hours and unfortunately starts in the heat of 4 PM. Perhaps a morning departure can be arranged. After that, it’s time to move on even if you must leave the lovely ZOV.

The rooms were basic but comfortable and cleaned every day and have a fridge but no closed wardrobe. Towels and sheets were clean everyday. The bathroom was very basic and the water pressure was awful, the shower was nothing more than a few drips. Breakfast was very basic. The staff are all really helpful and friendly, wifi doesn't work in all areas of hotel. Advertised as having its own private beach, thankfully this wasn't the case as we spent a lot of time watching the locals playing football etc on the beach, as there was nothing else to do. Very large rats running around the garden areas. Need to be careful if walking to the restaurants at night, as I had my bag snatched off my arm by guys on a scooter. The reception at hotel didn't seem interested even when I told them all my money had been stolen.

Yes the service is slow however the hotel is cheap compared to others in Zanzibar.
The ocean views throughout the day were amazing to say the least. I throughly enjoyed swimming in the tranquil ocean. I loved the fact that I could get to the ocean from my room in 20 sec, literally. The food was great, I couldn't get enough.

The walk to the restaurant from the superior rooms is a bit far however you could walk on the beach for 5min and take the short-cut while enjoying the view.

If your looking for a budget hotel, with amazing views, that serve awesome food, that's close to Stone Town and other tourist sites, this is your choice.

I've stayed in stonetown, I've stayed in nungwi, and I'm heading to paje later this month. If you're looking for a place to stay that is quiet relaxing and away from the action of stonetown, this is where you want to be. Zanzibar Ocean view has incredible views with an amazing staff of people that are willing to help you at the drop of a hat. I stayed here for business but my family is coming next week and it's the perfect place to relax and enjoy the views. It is my best kept secret that is surprisingly at the bottom of the list of hotels to stay in on trip advisor- this place is Wayyy underrated! I will be staying in amaan bungalows later this month as well which has shown promising reviews and will be flying to Pemba and staying in misali Pemba beach bungalows for a week starting tomorrow. I highly recommend this hotel chain and also recommend getting to know the incredible staff that will make sure you feel at home with them. The food takes a by long to come out but the service is too notch and they find a way to get you what you ask for.

I stayed at the hotel for four days during December 2010. One afternoon while sitting on the patio (we had a sea facing room) I saw this brown mass forming at the point where it was 'injected' into the sea. It swelled and spread (the progress remonded me of the movement of amoeba). Confused by what I was seeing I asked my sister to come and watch this - we then traced it back to the pipe adjacent to the hotel - it was sewerage that was being dumped into the sea. Needless to say I never went into the water again!!!!

To add to the distress of a polluted beach; the shower head fell off and the refridgerator in the room klanked like a motor ready to give it's last breaths. The breakfast - no care taken to even try and make it special. If you are 16 and do not care about the little small things - then this place would be ok. If you have been around and expect at least an attempt to offer quality this place is to be avoided.

We live in the UK but are familiar with Tanzania and wanted to stay at a decent place in Zanzibar. We looked up Ocean View Hotel on Trip Advisor and saw that it had one pretty bad review and we could understand the guests' frustration about the electricity. Electricity cuts seem to be the norm in E Africa but unavoidable it seems. We decided to ignore this bad report and thank goodness we did. We had a FANTASTIC time!! The view from the rooms of the Indian Ocean is gob smacking, the beach is kept very well maintained and the staff were very responsive to our needs. Apart from a visit to Stonetown (a guided tour is highly recommended) we holed up at the hotel for 3 glorious days. Ocean View was charming. We will be revisiting in December and can hardly wait.

We stayed at this Hotel in August 2009 and found it to be an amazing hotel with a great location. However nearing the end of our stay our electricity went off. There are no phones in the rooms and the reception is a bit of a distance away from the rooms so we walked up to let them know. They said they had "flipped the switch" so the electricity should be back on. We walked back to our room to find out that the electricity was still not back on. Gave them half an hour and then proceeded to go back to reception for the second time. We told them that it was still not fixed and that it was getting dark, and so we would go for dinner and would be back in our room in about an hour and could it be fixed by then as it would be dark by then.
After dinner we went back and STILL the electricity wasn't fixed so walked up to reception for the 3rd time. Obviously sensing that we were both quite angry they finally listened to us and sent the electrician down to fix it. It took him about half an hour to fix the issue so in total we ended up having no electricity (including no air con) for 3 hours.
We asked if we could speak to the manager as we were quite upset and angry that we were treated this way with being ignored and nobody apologizing. They said they only have one manager and he wasn't around but that he should be back at the hotel in 20 minutes so we asked if someone could come down and get us or the manager himself come down. After 40 minutes nobody had come down to let us know so we walked up to reception for the 4th time to be told that he still wasn't here. We asked why nobody had come to tell us this but this was just fobbed off.
In the end they got the manager on one of the receptionists mobiles, we tried to explain the issue to him but he would not let us even speak without interrupting us. Trying to tell him that the way we were treated was unacceptable was a mission in itself as he just talked over us. In the end he jut said that this is the way they do business and that if we weren't happy we should leave. So we did!! (after the mini bar guy tried to rip us off by overcharging us for the products)
The manager has to be one of the rudest people i've ever met so I'm not surprised that the staff were not much help at reception. The staff there have been given no authority to do anything so have to wait for the manager for everything and he is not always on site.

All i can say though is that the hotel itself is beautiful and if you happen to have a stay without any problems then it will be perfect but if you have any issues then good luck with trying to get any bit of compassion or service from them.

We booked this hotel for 1 night and it was not even close to what one should expect based on the photos displayed at booking . Com. The restaurant and bar areas were tragic and neglected. The lady in the reception at 19:00 that we arrived the most rude person in the entire zanzibar (hard to accomplish this).

The internet was not working anywhere and although the receptionist agreed there was a problem, did not assist us further. Overall, the worst hotel from the 5 that we tried during our stay in zanzibar.

The only reason we chose it was the fact it is near the airport, for our morning flight.

Ps: don’t book in advance, the hotel is empty and they make last minute offers with a significantly lower rate (compared to the 90$ i paid 4 months in advance).

Stayed for one night as part of tour group. Went for lunch and was only table in restaurant. Waitress was rude and unhelpful (rolling her eyes when asking questions about the menu). Food arrived and two meals had shards of glass in vegetable samosas (after we had eaten). We did not feel welcome at Ocean View!
