Toa Hotel and Spa, located in Pongwe is a modern, well-kept resort with a lot going for it. Our expectations were set high by the high rating and although we had a very pleasant stay, there are several areas in which we felt there is room for improvement.

On the positive side, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Each of the rooms was modern and comfortable with air conditioning and a large deck with seating to enjoy the lovely weather. During our 4 night stay, several food and beverage employees went out of their way to make us feel at home, even remembering our names. The food was delicious with a lot of options to choose from. Each night there was entertainment by the pool or on the beach and the Friday evening beach barbeque was amazing. The hotel sits on a semi-private beach and has multiple pools to choose from so there is always a place to relax outside.

The resort was recently opened and as a result, we expected to see some issues. We were pleasantly surprised that most things went quite smoothly. With respect to service, the only areas we noted that could be improved were in the areas of billing (we were charged for a massage we did not have), table bussing (staff cleared plates and silverware before we were finished), and housekeeping (the staff entered and cleaned our rooms even when the ”Do Not Disturb” light was on). Additionally, safe drinking water outside of the rooms was only available at an additional cost. All of these are easily addressed.

There were several areas that are not as easy to address and likely cannot be improved upon. One of those is the proximity to the main road through Pongwe. A couple of the guest buildings are set within a few feet of the road, homes, and businesses making traffic noise and other local disturbances easily heard. Toa is located in a somewhat remote area on the east side of the island making taxi service a requirement at an additional cost each day to get to any activities (i.e. Stone Town, snorkeling, shopping, restaurants, etc.). The beach is semi-private allowing locals and vendors access. Vendors along the beach often approach guests at times making a leisurely stroll on the beach uncomfortable with their “hard sell” techniques and shaming.

Although our stay was pleasant and we enjoyed our time at Toa, the location and minor issues with service do not warrant a 5 star review.

The stay here was excellent. The staff was very pleasant and entertaining to us, rooms and bathroom in the apartment is immaculate, and throughout the walking perimeter of the complex, regularly cleaned and maintained.

Meals and quisine really exoressed the culture and was incredibly tasty. The beach was like out of a movie, with inwater and on sand hammocks, perfectly white sand and clean shore. Everyone in the resort, from the manager to the staff were really trying to makr our stay as pleasant as possible and suceeded with the mission, because definitely, it will stay in our memories.

We would recommend this resort to everyone, with no downsides from our experience.

We stayed 5 nights at Toa Hotel and couldn't have wished for a better place to stay in Zanzibar. It has a modern vibe and you can tell a lot of thought has been put into every detail. We liked that it was not an enormous resort - just the right size (more intimate). Having only opened a year ago, everything feels new and immaculate. We chose all inclusive (which included all drinks as well) and the food was delicious, varied, plentiful and fresh. The level of service is exceptional (from reception, waiters, housekeeping, bar staff, porters, cooks and management) every single member of staff was welcoming, polite, friendly, attentive and greeted us with a warm smile every day. Nothing was too much effort and anything we asked was seen to immediately. Ally the manager checked with us every day to see if we needed anything which was a very nice touch - he clearly cares about every guest and wants them to have the most enjoyable stay (which we did). Two of our evening meals were on the beach with live music which we loved. Our room (honeymoon suite) overlooked the beach and was nice and spacious with a beautiful bathroom and terrace with sunbeds and pool - it had everything we could need: air con, fan, power shower, wifi, safe, robes, fridge with free drinks, lavazza coffee, blackout curtains. We enjoyed the beach bar as well as the pool bar for their tasteful decor and setting. Couldn't fault anything and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

I recently stayed at the TOA Hotel for a couple of weeks. The hotel is beautiful as soon as you walk into the entrance you are greeted by the warm friendly staff. My room was stunning with the bed decorated with flowers and luxury toiletries in the bathroom, soft towels and robes. The staff in every area of the hotel where amazing friendly and helpful, always smiling. The food was excellent and always a good selection to choose from. The pool area, bars and gardens immaculate even the beach is cleaned daily . The hotel provides excellent entertainment in the evenings around the pool and on the beach. I felt so at home and was made to feel special, I was even supprised with a birthday cake ,nothing was too much trouble for anyone. TOA is an excellent run hotel, the General Manager Mr Ally ensures he speaks with his guests every day and is available if required. I will definitely return to this hotel and would highly recommend it if your looking for a special place to stay.

Ali my dear friend,
We had the pleasure of staying at the TOA Hotel from October 3, 2023 to October 12, 2023.
A thousand words cannot describe the experience and hospitality at the hotel you manage,
On the day of our arrival at the hotel in the evening when we arrived from the airport to the hotel we were received
by the hotel staff with a big smile and with a good feeling and positive atmosphere,
Ali immediately asked us to go down to the beach for dinner, which takes place every Tuesday and Saturday.
After dinner we got the room with a balcony and a sea view according to the order,
Ali's personal attitude was felt from the moment we stepped foot in the hotel lobby and continued
that every morning Ali would come to meet us at breakfast to ask how we were
and make sure that we don't lack anything and that we enjoy our stay at the hotel.
Ali, we saw how you manage the hotel and are involved in all the smallest details,
Ali, you are one of the best managers we have met and an admirable figure,
This is also felt by the hotel's staff, who are all nice and helpful
Their work is faithful with a smile always.
The hotel is maintained at the highest level down to the smallest detail and we have no one to thank you for.
More than that, every evening you made sure to personally come to every table where there were guests and ask if everything was fine
OK, if we enjoy the food and if we lack something, personal attention.
On October 7, 2023, war broke out in Israel and during the day we were informed that our flight to Israel
Canceled, we asked you to extend the stay at the hotel for a few more nights until we are found
An alternative flight and you immediately hugged us and said no problem I will take care of everything you need
And so it was, you immediately sent the lovely Esther who took care of all our needs.
Ali, we cannot describe how much you made us feel at home and were kind and attentive to all our pain and needs
It is an honor to know a nice person like you, humane and a manager at the highest level.
We will make sure to recommend the hotel in every possible media and tell our story and everything you did
For us during our stay at the hotel especially when there was a problem and what a personal treatment we received from you and all the staff
Yours at the hotel. We have decided that every year we will return to stay with you at the TOA Hotel and we will also take care of everyone we know
will arrive at the hotel.
Ali,
We would like to personally thank you from the bottom of our hearts and all the staff at the hotel for making us feel
At home with the highest level of service and a smile worth a million dollars.
We were privileged to know a dear friend and a wonderful team, thank you very much for everything.
Itzik and Rebecca - we will be happy to be in touch.

Where do I start…

Hotel is brand new, well thought out layout and excellent facilities. We stayed in two rooms during our stay. The royal suite offered an exceptional elevated view of the whole beach and yet felt private. The second was the honeymoon suite, offered direct access to the beach from your private patio. A well designed room with private pool. The reflective glass on all the windows allowed you to enjoy the view from inside with privacy rarely available to beachfront rooms.

Lastly I’d like to mention the outstanding level of service and hospitality. From front desk, house keeping, resturant/bar waiters and to the chefs it’s clear that they all have a clear directive to ensure the guest is happy. I can only attribute this to the training and professionalism of their general manager.

If I could leave a higher rating I would.

Thank you Tao Hotel & Spa for a magical stay.

The service at the hotel and hospitality of the staff is amazing, from Ally the general manager to through every member of the hotel staff, they are all extremely helpful and do everything to make the stay enjoyable. The pool is very nice and the pool bar has great drinks. The amenities on the beach is very comfortable although you cannot really get to the water before 3 or 4 in the afternoon because of the tides in Zanzibar are extreme. The food is very good, although there is still work to be done regarding the vegan options.
pay attention that "Superior Sea View with Balcony" rooms varies a lot, we ordered three rooms and from one you could barely see the ocean standing at the edge of the balcony tilting your body out of it and from the other you could see it from bed.

First time in Zanzibar and maiden visit to Africa.
A beautiful, modern hotel, with all the facilities you would expect. Genuinely friendly, attentive and professional staff attend to all of your needs. The hotel is right on a beach of pure white sand with the blue and green Indian Ocean ebbing and flowing.

Buffet style eating for all meals but the food quality and choices were incredible with several fresh fish, shellfish and meat options available and cooked to order as well as other prepared dishes.

The weather was interesting. Most mornings there was 5 minutes of rain, which seemed to come from nowhere, which was followed by either sunny and cloudy afternoons, or completely blue skies and brilliant sunshine. A cooling sea breeze and sometimes stronger winds made for a very comfortable and relaxing beach/pool holiday.

A new and luxurious property located at Pongwe, a 50 minute drive from the airport. The hotel has a boutique vibe with friendly staff and unique rooms each having its own charm. We choose the Honeymoon suite with swimming pool having direct access to the private beach. This room has breathtaking views of the sea and you can wake up to watching the sunrise. The best part of our stay was the delicious food prepared by both the chef based on our dietary requirement. My husband and I loved the food so much that we even asked the chef to write us recipes. As we went in low season, the entire property was mostly to ourselves which made our stay even more special. The bartender Salum made us best cocktails and is a very fun person to be around. The manager Ally took very good care of us and ensured we were comfortable at all times. Would totally recommend staying at Toa Hotel and Spa Zanzibar if you enjoy slow living lifestyle (Pole Pole Zanzibar) :)

My husband and I spent our unforgettable honeymoon at this incredible hotel in Zanzibar.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and a genuine sense of hospitality. The staff at this hotel truly goes above and beyond to ensure that every guest feels welcomed and pampered. We appreciated every single one working at this hotel. Special thanks to the General Manager, whose personal attention made our honeymoon truly special.

The room was incredible and modern, and the whole bathroom is a dream and the balcony is really nice. The location is really quiet and ideal for recharging your batteries by taking romantic beach walks and just to chill by the pool or on the beach. The tidal ocean added an exciting dimension to our stay - when the tide was out, we enjoyed long, leisurely walks along the shoreline.

All the food was so fresh and tasty. Every morning we got a fresh made omelette of our choice and for lunch and dinner we were treated to the freshest fish and seafood. And lets not forget the romantic dinners on the beach with live music and fresh lobster.

Thank you to the entire team for making our honeymoon an experience we will cherish forever!
