Jafferji Hotel and Spa is architecturally beautiful, almost a monument considering it is a merchant house that is over 100 years old. The walls are made of thick stone. We stayed in the African Queen room. The hotel is located smack in the middle of stonetown. Walking to prison island ferry, and the night market was a stone's throw away.

Some of the issues with the hotel are that the WiFi/Mobile Internet is very poor because of the stone walls, we didn't get network in the room. The toilet had a constant sewage smell towards the evenings - but I should say that this smell didn't travel to where we were sleeping so it wasn't such a big issue for us. There is no phone in the room, so if you need anything you will need to go down to reception. Our room was located on the first floor facing the street, at night it would get quite noisy. The hotel is similar to a basic 3-star hotel, in terms of service and amenities.

The staff at the hotel are amazing, very sweet, and friendly. The breakfast option is quite limited, however, considering the low price of the hotel it is justified. Important to note is that the rooftop restaurant is only open for breakfast. They do not serve lunch or dinner, but this in my opinion is good as you can explore the many restaurants outside the hotel. There is a late checkout fee of 15USD, but since our flight was late at night they agreed to 25 USD to have the room till 8 PM which was great.

I would still recommend this place because of its excellent excellent location. It's a good hotel to just come back to, to sleep at night after a day of sightseeing.

I also want to add that Stonetown is an extremely safe place to travel for women as the entire city is covered with surveillance cameras, we would often come back towards 12AM walking back from the night market. The people of Zanzibar are also super friendly and helpful when it comes to getting directions along its winding streets.

We enjoyed very much our stayment at Jafferji House. The historic building/ rooms give a very special feeling.
The staff is very kind and helpfull (especially) the manager Rosemary.
The room was always cleaned very well and the quality of the food (breakfast-dinner) is very good.
This hotel is perfect to stay during a city trip of Stone Town.

I enjoyed my three night stay here. The buildings and rooms are each unique. The Princess Salame room was exactly as shown on their went site. Lighting is a bit dim and windows are stained glass. Super friendly staff throughout. They did their best to answer all my questions and even walked me to a location I couldn’t find. Breakfast on the rooftop was enjoyable, great view of Stone Town. Eggs, yoghurt, muceli, fruit, breads, juice, coffee and tea. Due to Covid and the lack of many guests there were no breakfast buffets. The historic nature of the building make it different than typical 4* properties. May not be for you if mobility is an issue… lots of stairs. Bed was a bit hard for my taste, AC and WiFi worked fine. The place was clean but could use a good once over. With low number of guests each room should be given a deep clean and polish. They provide bar soap, liquid soap and shampoo. Hair dryer outlet is in the bedroom, not the bathroom. Little quirks of a historic property but highly recommended if you want a stay in a non-chain property.

We recently stayed in Jafferji House for 2 nights and had a mixed experience.

Pros:
Well situated if your goal is to explore Stonetown
Cool, very interesting and unique building, and decor
Breakfast was nice, in a high level semi open air location.
Great spiced coffee.
Rooms are interestingly and well decorated, liked the door locks etc.
Air conditioning is unbelievably good (ice cold room) when it works (see below).

Cons:
Make sure the air con is working. We were here for two nights and the first room we recieved (Massai) the air conditioning did not work (we kind of felt that this was known as we were given the room). As a result the room was damp. We survived the first night with no sleep in swealtering heat, but asked to be changed for the second night. The staff responded well and we were moved without question / complaint which we appreciated. The difference between the two rooms was significant and we were pleased with the second. Honestly I would have checked out and found another hotel had we not been able to move as Massai room was not usable.

Aside from the Air con, we did also feel that the Massai room had not been cleaned at all. Hairs in the bed, mould on the pillow (probably damp related). My wife cleaned the toilet on arrival.

Our second room (Out of Africa) was much better but we still feel the cleaning might have been a bit better in the bathrooms. The shower had dirt in the bathtub for example.

Showerheads in both rooms need some maintenance as they throw water out of the shower (and on to the electric socket in the second room) quite a bit.

In summary if we had the out of Africa room for the entire stay i think i would be giving a fairly good review but given that 50% of our stay was in an unusable room its why i am leaving the rating i am.

We stayed here two nights in a signature suite (Livingstone room) and were slightly underwhelmed. The reviews here, on Agoda, and in Lonely Planet left us with high expectations. The building itself has a very unique layout, in a great location, and a brilliant view of the water on the terrace, but we felt on a whole it didn't live up to our high expectations. The room smelled and felt musty, and the corner where the toilet was smelled like pee for the duration of our stay, despite leaving the fans on all day. In a room that has no door (or wall really) to separate the sleeping area from the bathroom, we found this to be a major factor in our enjoyment of the place. Adding to that, the wifi only worked on the terrace and our bed was very short (uncomfortably short for me at 183 cm (6'). Perhaps if we had a different room it would have been a better stay, after all, the hotel itself is a visually unique place.

This historic building is really beautiful. It has a nice atmosphere - a winding staircase leading up to the generous sized rooms which are nicely decorated. The breakfast was very slow when we were there - one morning we left without breakfast before our tour despite leaving ourselves 50 mins to eat. However we mentioned this to the management and the problem was resolved. Our luggage arrived late from Precision Air during our stay and Mwanasha on reception was super helpful - she called the airline loads for us and didn’t stop until the bags were returned! Thanks for a lovely stay :)

Utterly enchanting- from our 5am arrival until our departure 3 days later we were looked after so incredibly well. The hotel organised our airport pickup and opened up with a gentle tap (you may need help to find it as it’s in the narrow streets of old Stonetown). The front of house was superb and Peter took care of us. The hotel has so much atmosphere, full of antiques and lush vegetation. Breakfast is in the roof balcony. Excursions can be organised. I had read a few unpleasant reviews but I can’t think why, cleanliness was first class and the hospitality was outstanding. I hope you are lucky enough to find a room - we stayed 3 nights it was so well located.

Do not believe anything you read on their homepage as everything it states is nonfactual. Jafferji house would never get more than one star. The rooms are dirty, smelly and run down. The beds have horrible mattresses and the pillows are so hard that I used my jacket as a pillow. The air condition worked for 15 minutes and if I needed wifi I had to go out to the hall. The fixtures for the shower was broken and the bathtub had no plug, not that it mattered because it looked horrible.
The lock on the door was not working as it should have been.
The staff was unfriendly and rude.
Do not under any circumstances believe anything on their homepage and stay away from this hotel. It is horrible.

You are right in the centre of Stone Town here and yet only a stone’s throw from the sea. The whole hotel is wonderfully atmospheric with rich colours and a great selection of Javed’s photography and Tanzanian artefacts. We were lucky to have the Princess Salme suite which we adored and was beautifully appointed and had everything we needed. The rooftop terrace here although small compared to others has one of the best views looking out over the old fort to the sea and the islands. Magical. Great staff and food round off the picture for this great value gem of a hotel.
