For those who want to experience the charm of a classic Zanzibar setting with a touch of ancient Arabian mystique, the place is Beyt Al Salaam, formerly known as Beyt Al Chai. This is an exquisite 11-room boutique hotel within a traditional Zanzibar house, built on 3 floors in what was once a tea house. Sitting only a few paces from the sea, the house is cool and breezy. On a typical day, guests relax in our beautifully appointed lounge and rooms overlooking a square filled with hibiscus and ancient tamarind trees - simultaneously feeling the pull of the mysterious Indian Ocean that lies just beyond the trees and soaking up the ambiance of this World Heritage Site only steps away from the shops, restaurants and attractions of contemporary Zanzibar.

Expected much more from this hotel considering it's 4*, and sister to the Doubletree by Hilton. This is 3* standards at best. On the plus side, staff are super friendly and helpful. It's in a great location in Stone Town, walking distance to everything. The majority of the room was clean. The beds are comfortable, and the AirCon in the room was perfectly crisp and cool, and the ceiling fan added extra air flow. However, the rooms don't have an iron/ironing board, no telephone, you need to walk up and down the horrendous stairs to ask the desk anything. The towels in our room were frayed. Toilet seat was broken, the shower knobs were broken. The water pressure is very low. The bathrooms clearly are not cleaned properly before and after guests, because there was used contact lenses dried up on the shelf when we arrived. The windows in the bathroom do not close properly, so every morning we woke up to a plethora of dead bugs all over the bathroom, even in our toiletries. The restaurant is ok, but very uncomfortable in summer with no AirCon. Breakfast is good, but the same everyday. Really wanted to love this place, but was a big let down.

Me and my fiancee were here for 6 nights in January. We were uppgraded to a deluxe room without even asking. We did have a request to switch to a room upstairs and without any trouble they upgraded us to a suite on another level for the same price as standard. On top of this we got complementary massages! Really good service!

Overall the rooms, food and staff were very good. For ex. comfortable beds for a good nights sleep, clean rooms and we recommend the more deluxe rooms to have more space.
Hamim in the reception was always happy to help with different matters, along with the other ladies as well. The lady in the spa did really good treatments and the staff In the restaurant was always Nice.

We had a really good time at the Beyt al salaam and you should really choose this Hotel in Stonetown.

Small hotel in convenient location downtown, not on the water. The staff were welcoming, friendly and accommodating. The room was clean and AC felt great. We just ate at the restaurant downstairs for our first dinner where we found the food to be good, but the service SLOW, even for Tanzania. We had an early AM checkout and they were all set with a (limited) breakfast to go and help with our baggage. I booked directly with hotel, and wish I had used another method as they wanted funds transferred instead of credit card - it worked, but cost me $50 in transfer fees. I would return to this hotel again.

I spent one month here for a business trip, and it was absolutely amazing. I`ve been to Zanzibar many times before, and therefore stayed at many different places, but this is without a doubt my favorite one. Whenever I go back again, I`ll without a doubt stay at this hotel.

The people working in the reception are amazing. Always helpful, taking care of your every need or request. They are also very welcoming and interested in how you are doing and your well-being. They truly want you to have a good experience and they are invested in their work.

The restaurant has very good food, the chef is great, and the people working there are so, so nice. Even the cleaning staff at the hotel are extremely welcoming, making you feel right at home, and always asking how you are doing and how your day has been.

The rooms are 10/10. Especially the one at the top, which I would highly recommend (201). It`s a little more pricey than the other rooms, but it is well worth it. So much space, a decent view, and the light there is amazing. The bathrooms are also great.

The location at this place is also amazing. It`s very central. Basically right in the middle of stone town. Stone Town can be a very busy and noisy place, which is what makes this place so amazing. It`s so well placed. It`s a two minute walk from the "main" part of stone town, which makes this place so much more relaxed and quiet, while still being close to some of t he best resturants and shops. It doesn`t get better. It`s a one minute walk from Travelers Cafe, Beach House, Six Flags and many other places which are must see resturants/bars.

I was sad to leave this place after my month there, and I felt like the people working there had become my friends. Looking forward to going back!

Wonderful hotel in the hear to Stone Town, close to the seafront, shops, museum and restaurants. It's an absolutely beautiful place to have a glimps of the Zanzibar History during your stay. Located right at a green square, you hear birds singing when waking up. Our room was very big and bautifully furnished, with original furniture from the time where traiding was on it's peak. The bathrooms were very special, with Omani elements. The restaurant on the ground floor swerves delicious Zanzibarian food to a good price. The people running the hotel are very friendly and helpful. Great thanks to Hamim to help uns out with our postcards, befor flying home. We can absolutely recommend this place, especially if you look for an authentic and origial location to stay. It will enrich your memories of your trip.

My husband and I lived in Beyt al Salaam Hotel for 13 days on our recent trip to Zanzibar. We were particularly impressed by how warm, courteous, respectful and loving the staff was. I would like to mention some names here- Charles used to serve us breakfast every morning with a bright warm smile. Priyanka would clean our rooms and once she knew our schedule she would keep the room cool and ready before we would come back. Kelvin and Hammim were always around to take care of our needs and helped us with whatever we needed. Mariyam arranged for us for an early suhoor when we wanted to observe a fast. Asiya in the restaurant was always ready to help. All in all, more than the property the people who ran it made it a memorable experience for us!

Liked · The hotel location is great as it's walking distance to the beach, restaurants, shops and museums. The staff were friendly and the room was comfortable and clean. I arrived late at night and the hotel receptionist was friendly and check in was seamless.

Minor considerations · The room I booked was on the second floor and the steps were steep and really high. On a positive, it was a workout getting to my room but if you have any mobility issues this will definitely be something to consider. They had limited alcohol beverage options, most of which were out of stock but then again there was the option of dining in another nearby restaurant.
