The Zanzibar Coffee House Hotel offers a touch of magic and romance in an authentic Arabic house deep in the heart of Stone Town. Transformed into a stylish hotel with harmonious interiors, antiques and rich fabrics, it is one of the oldest buildings in Zanzibar constructed by the Wazir to Sultan Said Bargash in 1885.

This hotel is beautiful and in a nice location for exploring Stone Town. It's not right in the middle of the tourist area, but definitely in a place where it's easy to access the seafront, a few nice restaurants, and the local market. It's in a unique, historic building and the space on the roof is downright lovely. Having delicious coffee at breakfast (including cappucinos/lattes!) is a definite highlight.

Overall I enjoyed my stay. The rooms were beautiful and very clean. The manager and staff were welcoming. That said, though, given the price of my stay, I wish there had been a few additional touches to justify the higher price, especially this stay was meant to be a treat to myself following a difficult life event (this may also have been due to the rooms I stayed in). For example, I think the mattresses could have been of higher quality. There is no turndown service (this is not 100% necessary to me... but given the price and service I received elsewhere in Zanzibar, I was a little surprised it was not included since I thought this was a higher quality hotel). On two occasions, in the later afternoon and evening, I asked the staff it would be possible to have a coffee or a cup of tea, but was told no. I found that surprising given the price of the hotel! I think having a hot water kettle in the room would be a nice touch for guests.

This hotel is a good option for Stone Town, but given the price I wish there had been a few more amenities. I would definitely recommend visiting this hotel for coffee/breakfast/and the view. As other reviewers have stated, I recommend reserving a room with an attached bathroom.

Response from Noreen Cichon, General Manager at Zanzibar Coffee House

Dear Erica, It has been a while since you stayed with us. I remember that we spoke a few times during your stay. After reading your concerns, I wished that we would have been more welcoming, even though we are all going through a challanging time. You are right! The turndown service is an important service that we take very serious. However, due to staff shortage caused by the current Covid19 pandemic we didn't manage to spray the rooms every evening. I apologize and assure you that we changed back to our regular operations meanwhile including daily turndown service. Furthermore, I haven taken your request to have a coffee or a cup of tea by heart and decided to provide a kettle and different teas next to our minibar for our in-house guests. I hope that we will be able to welcome you again one fine day! Warm regards from Zanzibar, Noreen & the ZCH team

This was our first ever visit to Zanzibar so we didn't really know what to expect. Once we'd got through the traffic-choked roads of Stone Town it was a pleasure to arrive at the Coffee House. It took a while for us to be checked in but while we waited we were able to indulge in a few cups of the tastiest coffee we've ever tried. Was it the coffee beans, the roasting process, the water or something else that made the coffee taste so good? We have no idea, but we now know where the best coffee in the world is served - at least that's our opinion. Breakfast is served at the top of the tower where there are views to be had across the rooftops of the surrounding buildings. The rooms were fine - clean, spacious and quiet. The central location of the hotel is useful for visitors who just want to stroll around Stone Town. We enjoyed our stay and would certainly choose the Zanzibar Coffee House again.

An interesting building in a hard to get to location within Stonetown. A fascinating view from the roof top floor with excellent coffee and food. This place is NOT for the disabled or those who cannot handle major stairs- stairways. Some of the upper rooms are beautiful however those on the lower floor should not even be sold for stay due to the strange and difficult layout that can be hazardous especially at night. This rooms have horrid views and unforgiving noises coming from adjacent builds just feet away. The room we stayed in had a nasty concrete stairs and sloped walkway leading to the toilet and shower about 30 feet away. The stairs to the bathroom are steep and hazardous with the bottom step looking like part of the floor. My girlfriend whom is young and athletic took a fall down these stairs at 3am which resulted in injury. I had contacted the manager Noreen earlier in the day asking for another room primarily because of the stairs and bathroom location and was told that no others were available- even though Expedia showed several including suites available. I even offered to pay more than the $126 I had paid. During the night you could hear one if not two people vomiting from the building adjacent to the bathroom and walkway. During most of the day the generator next to the room ran continuously throughout the day. I was furious after my girlfriends fall and horrid stay and immediately left the hotel in the early AM skipping the free coffee and breakfast. After contacting the manager again after our stay part of her response was: “I'm very sorry that Leah fell down the stairs! I didn't expect this to happen because many elderly and disabled guests managed the stairs already.”
I will guarantee you that few if any elderly and or disabled can or would deal with the stairways and wells within this building let alone the ones to the bathrooms. I would never even consider staying at the property again. However, if you CAN handle the major stairways the coffee and food with the rooftop view is worthy for a visit.

Responded 25 Oct 2021
Dear Mrbillone, Thank you for your comment. We take pride in doing our best for all our guests, and are truly sorry that your second stay with us didn’t live up to the first one, due to issues largely beyond our control. Please let me begin by clarifying something about your booking with us: When you first arrived, it was already evening, and we had several rooms available that night; so we upgraded you without charge, and you booked the same room again for your return from the beach hotel. As you came back one day early, it was still occupied. I offered you the best alternative we had available that day, inviting you to take a look at the other option as well (and no matter what Expedia showed, we really didn’t have a suite), but it was a step down from your previous room; that is why as a courtesy we gave it to the both of you for the single occupancy rate. It was never a question of payment but only one of availability. The Zanzibar Coffee House is located in the heart of Stone Town, so some noise from the street or adjacent buildings cannot be avoided; but we sincerely regret that you had to suffer through someone in a neighbouring house being sick, and several hours of generator noise due to a power outage that afternoon. It is also very unfortunate that your girlfriend fell down the stairs, and I am relieved she hadn’t sustained any major injuries! The Zanzibar Coffee House is an original Stone Town building with many stairs, nooks and crannies - which is part of its charm, but may also be hazardous. Thankfully our guests usually negotiate the house without incident, but of course even one is one too many. Therefore, please accept our sincere apologies for the troubles and inconveniences you met with on your second stay with us! Thank you for also mentioning that you found some of our rooms beautiful, as well as our excellent coffee, food and our cosy rooftop with the fascinating views! Best wishes

If you want an authentic experience of Stone Town, great coffee, beautiful rooms, good service and a lovely staff and manager - this is the right place to go. For a reasonable price you get an unforgettable stay with a sumptuous breakfast on the rooftop tea house. Surrounded by the multiple sounds, smells and colours of Stone Town, this gentle start into the day was a highlight for us. Located behind the busy market, the house is nestled in the alleyways of Stone Town, everything is easily reachable by foot. The rooms are equipped with a safe, AC, authentic Zanzibar furniture and are thought- and tastefully decorated. Staff is super friendly and very attentive. We can not wait to come back!!

We stayed here for 2 nights. The room was exceptionally clean and the a/c worked brilliantly. The ladies looking after the rooms are lovely. The location is excellent with most places of interest less than a 10 minute walk away. The one thing that let it down was the breakfast included in the room rate. This is served on the roof terrace before it opens to the public. It wasn't great and when compared to the food on offer to walk in guests downstairs the comparison was poor. For a coffee house I would have expected breakfast to be excellent - sadly it was far from that and it really felt as though the walk in customers were more important than those who had chosen to stay there. Such a shame.

We loved our room (we chose one with an en-suite). Breakfast was great on the rooftop (usual spread of cereal, fruit, yoghurt and eggs/omelettes made to order). Obviously (given the room rate), the included breakfast will not be the same as what is offered at the cafe downstairs, but that is also available to guests should they want to pay a bit more. This hotel is excellent value.

I stayed at the Zanzibar Coffee House for two nights upon my arrival on Unguja/Zanzibar.

I had a great stay. The room was just like on the pictures, room and common areas were really clean, the breakfast (and the food served in general) was delicious and from the rooftop where it is served you can enjoy a beautiful view on Stone Town. Also from there it is easy to walk around and discover the city. Finally, the staff is really helpful and care about it guests ! If you look for a cozy place to stay in Stone Town this is your place !

Excellent Start to our Zanzibari holiday. After travelling for so many hours, we got here and received the warmest welcome and best tasting coffee of our choosing. The room designs are antique and beautiful with center pieces dating back ages. Only 8 rooms in this hotel with an awesome roof top accessible to the public in the day and only for guests from 6pm. This means we could enjoy drinks at the rooftop by ourselves watching the sunset without stress.

They run an honesty bar in the hotel and drinks are half priced compared to restaurants and bars. The food is so beautiful, be sure to try the chicken sandwich and the chocolate mousse tart. Hotel is very central and easily accessible. Staff are super friendly. We had amazing breakfast included in our stay. Otherwise the hotel offers breakfast at 25,000TSh for walk-in guests.

The views from the roof top are beautiful. The coffee is crisp and delicious. We received a beautiful gift basket of soaps and body scrubs and coffee. The only issue was the Internet wasn’t great from our rooms but they did share their office wifi with us which was very kind of them. This is the best hotel we’ve stayed at in Zanzibar so far and I totally recommend.

Fantastic customer service from the moment I walked in. Rooftop is stunning with amazing views of the city. We enjoyed the coffee however seeing some of the food being served, it looked perfect.

Whilst I personally did not the enjoy the slight bitterness of the coffee, the experience was great from all fronts.

Customer Service: 5/5
Coffee: 4.5/5
Food: 5/5
Ambience: 5/5

We left buying loads of premium coffee beans, which make for great gifts.

Definitely worth trying
