We spent 1-1/2 days at the Estancio and had a great time! We went out on horseback to check on the cattle (there are 1500 cows, plus sheep and horses), rode in the truck to feed the animals, and canoed in the river. Mariela took us into Durazno, where she was running errands (selling some animal skins, picking up groceries,... More

If you are looking for something a little different, non touristy that gives you an educational look at the life on a Uruguayan estancia then this is for you. This 100 year old estancia has all the charm one can only imagine. The owner,Mariela has lived here her entire life. She along with her husband Carlos run this working ranch... More

We wanted to see a glimpse into life in rural Uruguay and booked at El Silencio with just these TripAdvisor reviews and Mariela's email to go on. We couldn't have been happier with the leap of faith. Mariela, Gonzalo, and their family and employees blew us out of the water with their hospitality and warmth. We loved learning about life... More

We looked at doing a gaucho experience in Argentina but were put off by the cheesy shows and high prices. My partner luckily found Mariela y Gonzalo's estancia. Sadly we could only stay two and a bit days, but it was easily two of the best days in our six months of travel in South America! Mariela picked us up... More

We are a group of 6 students, staying in Montevideo for an internship. I wanted to experience a bit of the gaucho lifestyle during our stay and found this estancia on tripadvisor. We stayed for one night and it was an amazing experience. We arrived at the Durazno busterminal where Mariela (the hostess) was waiting to take us to the... More

Whether you're with a family, with friends, or with a lover, this estancia has it all. Delicious food, great horseback riding, and the most scenic landscape Uruguay has to offer. The living space was spacious too. Mariela and everyone who works/lives on the estancia are some of the kindest, most generous people I've ever met. This estancia is as good... More

We spent 4 days in Estancia el Silencio in the month of July and it was one of the best experiences we had during our 5 weeks in South America. One thing is very important - the estancia is a working cattle ranch and a family home, not a hotel or tourist resort, so if you're expecting 5* accommodation and... More

This was one of our best experiences on our trip through south america! 6-8h per day on the horses together with Gonzalo, great meals and a very warm atmosphere. Get a real insight how life is like on a cattle farm and "work" with the cows. Well, "work" means it is voluntary, so you can join as often as you... More

I stayed here with my financee for 3 days and we loved it. We want to go back, in fact we want to move there! So as not to mislead, its important to say that this a working cattle and sheep ranch, not a tourist resort and its not 'luxury'. But it is a fantastic insight into rural life in... More

We found this estancia searching for places to stay in Uruguay, as we wanted to cover quite a lot of the country while there from Canada. Had some trouble with e-mail communication: we were supposed to pay a deposit to hold those days for us, so we phoned Mariella. As she spoke little English and our Spanish rudimentery, she said...
