Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Arriving in pouring rain, we were quickly shown to our lovely room - a real "wow-factor" view and a spacious room with huge bathroom. Fabulous toiletries and fluffy towels on an excellent heated towel rail, tea and coffee making cupboard and a comfy bed - a perfect base. Food at the bar was excellent but as a treat we booked for the award winning restaurant and it was worth every penny! Cocktails in the sumptuous lounge proceeded fabulous service and exquisite food. All staff were excellent and fully informed on the requirements of a gluten free diet - the gluten free bread products were the best ever! The chef even made a take away lunch for the journey home. The bar staff were so friendly and made great suggestions of local gins, they remembered guests and took a real pride in their job. From the transfer drivers to gardeners and indoor staff - everyone made us feel very welcome. All in all a fabulous, luxurious stay and so special to lie in bed and see the lighthouse!

I was moved to write this review after reading the adverse review that was posted in August. Yes the staff are young but in my experience they are well trained and attentive and help create a relaxed atmosphere in the hotel. As for the food it is excellent. I’m also amazed by the comment about the rooms until I thought about the elephant in the room DOGS! The hotel policy of allowing dogs in ground floor rooms is getting a bit out of hand I feel. During my stay I observed 8 dogs in just 4 rooms below us. Bryher has seen an increase in dogs causing damage to local livestock and many of the locals are very concerned. I’m therefore surprised that Tresco Estates isn’t listening to the locals and putting a limit on the number of dogs at the hotel at anyone time. Personally I come to Scilly for the peace, the scenery and nature . I don’t find my experience is enhanced by staying in kennels or having dogs running free on the pristine beaches. Most Uk councils restrict dog access to beaches to the out of season periods. Dogs are not environmentally friendly and I think the hotel should limit their numbers and not allow them in the pool area . Hell Bay is in danger of following Karma by loosing sight of the environment and community in which it sits. You pay a high price to stay at Hell Bay but the increase in the number of dogs makes me think that price isn’t worth paying.

Dropped in for lunch today. The delicious meals of squid, bouillabaisse and strawberry and tomato salad between us all arrived quickly despite the restaurant being busy . The waiting staff were helpful, knowledgeable and welcoming. All looking forward to our next visit.

Very disappointing. Overrated hotel, poor service and average food. Run by gap year students, no ‘grown up’ presence visible. Staff all chatting about when their last day would be with little attention to customers. Dinner was bland and 2 main courses arrived after the other 2 had finished. Tired decor, musty bedroom, uncomfortable beds. I couldn’t use the pool at 8.30am as the covers hadn’t been removed, no one around to help. Spa closed, no therapist employed. It’s in a beautiful location but don’t waste your money.

My wife and I have just returned from a fabulous 5 night stay at Hell Bay Hotel We were fortunate to have the emperor suite with a stunning view .The suite is faultless, tea and coffee making facilities ,a huge comfortable bed .,and a lovely sitting area The meals are very good - and every member of the staff went out of their way to make our stay so enjoyable .They are truly a great bunch .We enjoyed our boat trips to Tresco and St Martins .Great meal at the Seven Stones pub on St Martins and great view >Tresco -Abbey Gardens and lunch at the Ruin Beach Cafe are both worth a visit The helicopter flights from Penzance are weather dependent but the seemless connection we had to Bryher,to the hotel ,.Helicopter from Penzance to Tresco, luggage and ourselves from Heliport to the quay on Tresco ,boat to Bryher and transport for us and luggage to Hell Bay worked very well and again in reverse when coming home -It is obviously a very well oiled machine J and C

Dear K9063SCpaulw, Thank you so much for your review. It is always lovely to hear that our guests have enjoyed their stay with us at Hell Bay, but it is more lovely still when they have enjoyed the wider island of Bryher so much. Delighted that you made the most of the walks and views on offer, and of course had several tasty meals with us in the restaurant! We look forward to welcoming you back to Hell Bay again soon. We had a lovely stay at the Hell Bay hotel and it is clearly somewhere that invests in the buildings, the furnishings and the staff. Our room, requested well in advance, had a splendid sea view. We loved the little kitchenette and fresh milk for tea and home made biscuits. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent for both breakfast and dinner. We would love to come back.

This was our third visit and we stayed in Room 22 (one of our favourites for the views!). Everything was as excellent as ever. We love the understated, friendly but efficient service and the whole relaxed atmosphere of the hotel. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the food is amazing, but it's the little touches that make the difference - a plug socket near the mirror over the dressing table and massive, proper bath "sheets" instead of the miserly towels you get in some places! Bryher is such a magical place and we will definitely be back.

This was our second stay at the Hotel. We were a party of 4 adults and young children. The hotel is in a beautiful location and rooms facing the sea provide stunning views. We used the hotel pool, really enjoyable. Of an evening we ate in the hotel. Meals were very good the only thing we would have liked was a bit more variety in the evening menu. We could have eaten elsewhere of an evening but on this occassion we chose to eat there. Breakfasts were excellent, with lots of hot and cold choices. Hotel staff were friendly and efficient throughout. Getting to the island from St Marys via Tresco Boat Services on Firethorn was easy, all we had to do was look at boat times on Tresco website and let Hotel know what time boat time we were on. The hotel takes your luggage from quay to hotel and vice versa on return, we walked from quay to Hotel but you can get a lift in the mini bus. There are lots of walks from the Hotel and if you want a grand sunset view towards the small island of Gweal and out to sea walk up the hill opposite. Rushy Bay is about 10 minute walk and beautiful swimming spot, ,bit of shell collecting and lie on the beach. All in all great stay and lookig forward to returning.
