Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Lovely place, clean, quiet and excellent facilities. About a 25-minute mainly uphill walk from Hugh Town, but when the community bus runs there is a stop at the nearby gardens. Each room also has a fridge and kettle, which is great and the honesty shop for food bits was lovely, especially the ice cream late at night.

My husband and I had 4 nights in a twin bedded ensuite room with a shower. The room was clean on arrival and had a kettle, small hanging space for clothes plus USB points for charging electronic devices. We had our own private space outside with wooden decking and a bench and 2 chairs to sit on. There were also 2 fold up chairs in our room which could be used in the room or taken outside. There is a shared kitchen with 2 kettles, 2 microwaves, an oven and a toaster plus plenty of crockery and cutlery. There is plenty of seating to eat your breakfast or meals in the kitchen plus a TV too. The kitchen we found was a very sociable space as other holiday makers were happy to chat with you and quite a few we met had stayed at the Lodge before. The Lodge has a freezer full of home made meals made by them which are very reasonably priced and can be cooked in the microwave from frozen. We had their chicken and mango curry one day and a lamb hot pot on another. Both of these meals were excellent and good sized portions. You can also buy other items at the Lodge in the reception area such as cereal, jam, milk, chocolate, teabags, coffee etc. There is also a cafe at the Lodge which is open during the day from 10am - 4pm. There is a small laundry room too should you wish to do any washing. The staff who work at the hostel and cafe are very friendly and helpful if you have any queries. We would definitely stay here again.

An absolute delight! In the middle of a splendid nature, spacious, clean minimalist but very comfortable rooms; an amazing kitchen allowing lovely conversations in a very functional environment…but most importantly, a warm and genuinely welcoming manger. My stay was an absolute joy. Thank you so much 🧡

Absolutely wonderful apartment with sea views right in the centre of the island. Really well equipped and we took full advantage of the home cooked meals available to buy from the hostel. Beautiful gardens too and very friendly hosts. Be prepared though for 25 minute walk to and from Hugh Town Quay.

Whilst staying in Porthloo we took advantage of the 'Lobster Night' home delivery offered by Longstone. What a treat! Delicious home made crab pate as a starter, then a fully prepared lobster and great salad selection ..... all delivered to your door! All we had to do was make sure that the wine was chilled in advance. Can't recommend highly enough!

Fantastic week’s stay here – I would recommend without hesitation. My room was a great size and value (twin room, single occupancy), with my own kettle and mini fridge, ensuite shower room and terrace with table and chairs to enjoy the sunshine. I could even see the sea! Both my room and the communal kitchen were very clean, and the kitchen was well equipped. There is a little shop on site for essentials, including homemade frozen meals from the adjoining café. The lodge is a little way out of Hugh Town, approx. 20-25 min walk – but that was of no issue to me. I did see a few hired bikes and carts in the car park and there are taxi’s, which I expect aren’t that much (but I walked everywhere, so can’t comment on the cost of these). Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, as too where the young ladies working in the busy café – I can highly recommend the afternoon tea. My only feedback would be that it would have been nice to have a desk/table as well as the shelving unit in the room and also some ice cream in the shop for when the café is closed in the evening :o)

Stopped for a weekend break: Great value and exceptionally clean with great staff and amenities. Crisp white bed linen and towels and spotless shower room/toilet. Access to fully kitted kitchen if needed but with easy 20/25 min walk to town, who’s cooking!

Lovely stay here - if you have concerns about this being a hostel I should say that this is the best hostel I have stayed in. I had a solo room which was very clean, spacious and comfortable and a nice en suite. The communal kitchen was well equipped too - there are ready meals on hand you can buy or you can go the to shop in Hugh Town and get your own stuff. As there are a small number of rooms there is always space in the kitchen. You also get a fridge and kettle in your own room so you can keep thing separate. It is a great base to explore St Mary's - the main road takes you to the town, Porthmellon, Garrison etc and there are cut throughs towards Old Town and Holy Vale/Pelistry on the eastern side. Only word of warning - it is around 20-25 minutes walk from the town and shops, so you just need to factor this into your step count! Taxis are of course available too. Great stay - would definitely recommend.
