Hotels of this standard are vanishingly rare and it’s a pleasure to write this review. Staying in an Elizabethan fortress is probably a unique privilege as a guest rather than a prisoner but it is anything but austere. We stayed in a castle room which was comfortable, well furnished and with views out to the sea. Every journey in and out of the fortress is an adventure past the carronades and the portcullis - but tall folk take care, the Tudors were a lot shorter than modern humans! The atmosphere is relaxed, informal and friendly. We stayed on DB&B terms and discovered that the food is superb, with a strong fish focus. Staff and the service they provide are skilled, friendly and helpful. We noted that many guests are multiple returnees and that helps show the quality of the product. Highly recommended and definitely one of the best hotels in the country.

We enjoyed staying here. We had a castle room and it was fun staying somewhere which such an interesting history. The room rate wasn't cheap but ours including both breakfast and dinner so felt reasonable. The complimentary shuttle bus was waiting at the airport as planned and the driver was friendly giving us details about the islands. Check in was fine with a new perspex screen for added distancing. All staff were friendly and professional. Our room was in the old hotel and large enough with nice views across the terrace and the sea. The room had a bath and shower which was a bonus. The food was very good, both breakfast and dinner. The restaurant in the castle building was quite tight and other diners were quite close. In the other restaurant there was much more space, light and air. The hotel is in a great location with lovely walks right outside and a nice, slightly steep, stroll into Hugh Town and to the quay for boat excursions. Whilst not cheap we felt the hotel represented good vale as the quality and historic significance were worth paying for.

A very dear friend and I had booked a trip to this hotel on the recommendation of an artist who now lives in Cornwall. We booked in October 2019 before the pandemic and were relieved to be able to travel there and have a safe and socially distanced 5 day break with the most stunning weather too! A private hotel minibus collected us on arrival and delivered us and our suitcases in no time at all, being only a short journey to the Garrison. We each had chosen a Guards room, the single occupancy rooms on the ramparts which were super, small of course but perfectly adequate, full of character and with amazing views outside our own front doors. The hotel staff were so friendly, willing and sociable without being overly forward, Tim the boatman came in at breakfast each day to sort out trips for the following day and took bookings, helped out with queries in general on the islands, and James the family owner also came in each morning to chat and check and book dinner requirements either in the conservatory or restaurant in the main building - both different and beautiful. Which leads me onto the food. Breakfast was a tad disorganised with staff having their own duties under Covid-19 guidelines which sometimes led to mixed or missed messages, but on the whole, it all came out in an order of sorts. And it was delicious....but the dinner each evening was exceptional. Perfectly portioned for four delectable courses - the flavours and ingredients were top notch, presentation stunning. Wine reasonably priced too for an island and with a good choice....we plan to return in a couple of years in Springtime but equally I would be very comfortable returning as a single traveller any time of year, so special are these islands, the people and this hotel. Thank you all so much.

Stayed here for a week, we were due to arrive on Saturday but our flight was cancelled from Lands End due to fog which seemed that week to be a persistent problem. Luckily the hotel had people unable to leave who wanted our rooms and we managed to find accommodation for the night. As flying was not guaranteed we took the morning ferry instead arriving at lunchtime on Sunday. The hotel staff were very accommodating around our changing room requirements moving luggage between the rooms without a single complaint. The castle room was smaller and a bit dated ( the shower could do with an upgrade) compared to the garden room which our teenage son preferred. All the team were amazing especially the reception team, Katie the cleaner, the shuttle bus man and the cheerful bar and restaurant staff a few of whom were new to the hotel. The food at the hotel was superb - we stayed on a DB&B package which we were pleased we did as getting a table in the evening in the town because of social distancing could be tricky as I think many people had booked well in advance. Over the course of the week the menu was very varied and the fish in particular was gorgeous. Breakfasts were equally good. Tim the boatman was superb - giving us island and weather recommendations. it felt very special going out in his boat and he took extra time pointing out the sights and trying to see if we could see seals. Our son particularly enjoyed his conversations. He recommended the nature trial past the vineyard and across to the other side of St Mary’s which was attractive. We went to Tresco - the walk up to Cromwells castle is spectacular, Bryher and St Martins. We rented a paddle board and Kayak from St Martins water sports and spent a lovely afternoon on Parr Beach. We hired a couple of bikes from St Mary’s bike hire and they left them and picked them up from the hotel for us. Whilst the weather was a little cloudy and foggy it didn’t rain which allowed us to explore the islands. The hotel is a great base and it was lovely to know we were coming back to a wonderful dinner and wine (recommend the Cornish rose and the islands gin) every evening. Our 16 year old son had been reluctant to come but said he had a brilliant time and how relaxing it had been and on returning home said how much he missed the hotel and the islands. I’m sure we will be back but will book earlier next time to get the garden rooms and not book the sky bus plane!

Staying away with your dog means you don’t often get the best room so l was overwhelmed with the suite, garden and sea views that we’d booked at the Star Castle (room 31). Freshly decorated with quality furnishings in a modern coastal theme. There were dog bowls, mat, treats and a tub of towels on our arrival as well as tea, coffee and biscuits that were replenished every day and were sited in a nice little porch with fridge, large sink. The garden was completely enclosed which was perfect as were the glorious views of the sea and harbour.
We ate breakfast each day in the conservatory. Our dog is too anxious to be left in the room without barking so if we ate here he could be tied to a picnic table in the garden and see us clearly.
The breakfast is really very good but can sometimes be slow due to the fact that, as you don’t need to book, it can get busy. My advice would be to pre book your cooked breakfast for a set time the day before if you need too. During our stay we ate twice in the evening (in the conservatory) and at the discounted rate of £30 for 4 course’s this food was exceptional. A great menu (that did change) and even at the full price of £45 for non resident’s was still really good value.
The indoor pool was beautifully warm and l am only sorry that we didn’t find the time to use the jacuzzi too.
Our bags were delivered to our suite direct from the boat and on our departure, collected from our room and taken direct to the ferry at no charge.
All of the staff were very polite and friendly and when we return will would definitely stay here again. The Star Castle is sited at the top of a hill so while it does offer stunning views if you have trouble walking steep hills it may not be for you?

We spent a week at the Star Castle and found it to be a wonderful base to explore the Isles of Scilly. The hotel is very dog friendly, has wonderful views from the castle walls and is very close to the harbour. The food in the restaurant at breakfast and dinner was outstanding. The staff are all delightful and do everything they can to help. Some have commented that the walls in the garden rooms are very thin and whilst this is true, there was no noise at night so it didn’t affect our stay at all. Whilst quite expensive we thought it was worth it and if you’re on a B&B tariff, a four course evening meal is very competitively priced (£28). The garden rooms are large, well furnished and equipped but PLEASE put a mini fridge in every room! We’ll definitely visit again.

Visited recently with wife and 2 lively labs. The staff did everything they could to accomodate us and make our stay wonderful. On arrival, we found a special basket of goodies for the dogs, including blankets and bowls. Each night as we could not go in the restaurant with the dogs, a table was laid for us in the bar where we were served the restaurant menu. The food was fabulous and I would strongly recommend guests to take the full board option, as it was excellent value. We will be back when lockdown is over without the dogs for a more romanic break.

We are just sitting having a cup of tea before checking out. Very sad we cannot stay for the whole weekend.
From stepping off the plane everything is organised brilliantly, a lovely shuttle picks you up and drops you right next to reception.
Staff from the start are super friendly and extremely efficient. Check in was seamless. We had a garden room and they are lovely. Top quality toiletries and the room was immaculate. Very comfortable room.
Dinner was in the restaurant and four courses of delicious food served by some of the friendliest staff I’ve ever met! They are a credit to the hotel!
Breakfast again in the restaurant was lovely, served by some of the same staff from the night before and new ones, super friendly again. Nothing was too much trouble.
Will be booking for a longer stay next year very soon on checkout!
We are here for the gig racing which is why unfortunately it was full for the rest of the weekend!
Best place we have stayed in St Mary’s in 22 years of visiting!

We recently spent 2 nights at Star Castle on our tour of the Scillies and very much enjoyed it. We stayed in a very comfortable Garden Room which has a lovely terrace and a comfy bed. For the price I would say that the shower (hand hose over the bath) could do with a bit of an upgrade.
We ate in both the restaurants and the food was excellent. My only mild complaint was that the courses were hurried out very quickly. It felt that the moment your cutlery was down the next course was out! However, I’m sure that this is a good thing in many peoples eyes. The price for residents is very good value.
The reception staff were very helpful.

Dear alison38 Thank you for your feedback. I am so pleased that you had a good comfortable stay overall. We are looking into improving and upgrading our garden room bathrooms this winter, ready for next season. I am so pleased that you enjoyed the food on offer and will certainly feedback to the team not to rush the service and be more careful pacing the courses. It is great that you found the DBB price of good value and the team helpful. We hope to welcome you back soon. Kind regards James

This was our first visit to the Scillies and definitely won’t be our last! We were lucky enough to stay in the Starcastle Hotel, situated a very short but steep walk from Hughtown, the main town on St Marys.

The hotel is utterly enchanting as it is built in an old garrison, so when you first arrive you walk under the portcullis and follow the alleyway round to reception where the hotel’s comfortable and classy interior reveals itself. There is a dungeon bar, beautifully appointed restaurant and you can have drinks out on the top of the garrison and take in glimpses of the beautiful harbour. The whole feel of the interior space is of an English country manor and it’s really well done and doesn’t feel at all artificial.

There is additional accommodation in the form of garden rooms in the hotel grounds nestled in the immaculately tended gardens, we didn’t go in but they looked to be lovely, with some stunning sea views.

There is also a purpose built orangery/conservatory beyond these where you can eat. We had dinner here one evening and I felt slightly that the interior needed more work, it’s a bit sparse and has a slightly cheap holiday camp vibe which jars with the rest of the hotel. The food was ok but not great and was my only other niggle with the hotel.

The staff at the Starcastle are charming and couldn’t be more helpful, from the restaurant staff to reception we were hugely impressed. We will definitely book again.
