Me and my boyfriend wanted a break away and Carnwethers was perfect. We stayed in the B&B, breakfast each morning was amazing! So many options and catered for everyone. The room was so fresh and clean and the comfiest bed! Rachel and Jeff live on site and are always around to help with what we needed and where we needed to go for the best walks. Couldn’t have been a more relaxed getaway, especially with pelistry beach a 5 minute walk away for an evening bbq.

We stayed in Dove Lawn Cottage and what a disappointment. The photos on the website make it look beautiful and we were so excited in reality it is shabby, tired and out of date. Our accommodation had a stale bad smell and was full of flies, two out of three doors didn’t open and cobwebs and dead daddy long legs cling to the outside of the grubby windows. The kitchen is badly equipped and there are no extras not so much and as a dishwasher tablet or scouring pad to wash up with. The furniture is old fashioned and seen better days The photos don’t show the avocado bathroom suite with a white toilet seat and dated light and a very odd utility sink just outside the door. Some sun beds by the pool were broken as was one outside our accommodation. The electrical appliances were last PAT tested in 2017 and the hand sanitisers were all alcohol free. There was no information about the accommodation inside and we had to ask about recycling, rubbish, check out etc the only information included was shop and wine prices. On a positive note it was warm, there was plenty of hot water and a nice new shower in one en-suite.

Response from Rachel Knowles, Owner at Carnwethers Country House Holiday Apartments
Responded 11 Oct 2020
We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay in Dove Lawn. We have been owners of Carnwethers since March 2017 and have continually updated all the cottages since our arrival. Dove Lawn has been completely re-decorated, re-carpeted and had new curtains since we arrived. Winter 2019/2020 the cottage was partially rewired and received a completely new bathroom with a Roca suite and Grohe fittings. The cottage has been continuously rated Four Star by Visit Britain Inspection Teams. The Carnwethers Website was developed in spring 2019 and all the pictures on the website were taken at this time and are a true reflection of the property. We cannot find any evidence of a bad smell in the property. Since you did not mention this at the time I cannot suggest what might have caused the problem. We clean the property thoroughly ourselves between guests and this year we have adhered to all the recommendations provided by the government and industry bodies regarding cleaning and sanitization. The hand sanitizer at the front door to the cottage and has been personally approved by the island environmental health officer. We also provided surface sanitizer and disposable paper towels for your use in the cottage. The sanitizer provided conforms to BS EN 1276 which is the industry standard. There were no flies in the property when we finished cleaning it on your arrival. Daddy long legs are common in the garden in September and will come into the property through open windows, but this is not something that is particular to Carnwethers. We provided an information pack in the post prior to your arrival with a map of the island and a map of the property, along-with information relating to your stay including shopping advice, taxi numbers and our Covid-19 preparations. We responded promptly to all questions you raised which is our normal practice since we live onsite and are available most of the time. Unfortunately property manuals have been removed from the properties as they cannot be effectively cleaned between guests. Our welcome pack includes: Olive oil, salt and pepper mills, dish cloth and washing up liquid, toilet rolls, black bin bags, compost bags and two pints of milk. The list for the shop was attached to a paper disposable bag containing tea, coffee, sugar, jam, clotted cream and home made scones. The shop onsite was new this year to help our visitors avoid the queues outside the shops in the town. The shop operated on a honesty basis and the list provided was a single use item (allowed under Covid-19 regulations) so that you could keep a tally of your purchases. There are 8 new sunbeds around the pool which were purchased in winter 2018. We did get some older sunbeds out of storage to provide guests with the option to have their own sunbeds at each cottage (along with brand new gas bbq’s). These older sunbeds do show some sign of wear and tear, but are fully functional. Again I am very sorry that you didn’t enjoy your stay on the islands, especially when the whole country has had a very difficult year.

Really comfy, well-equipped accommodation. The owners had gone to great lengths to make the flat covid-safe. Good size swimming pool - one household at a time. Basic groceries available for sale on site. Close to a stunning beach and coastal walks. Easy to get around - takes about 30-40 minutes to walk into Hugh Town. Reliable local taxi service when needed.

My wife and I, together with our 2 cocker spaniels, have just enjoyed another fabulous 2 sunny weeks at Carnwethers in our favourite apartment - RowanTree, made even better after being fully renovated. This self catering apartment is perfect for us and very comfortable. Jeff and Rachel continue to invest in Carnwethers and have thought through the challenges posed by Covid -19. Each apartment now has its own barbecue. Hand sanitisers provided in all areas. Great care has been taken when cleaning the rooms etc. Nothing has been left to chance....well done. A well stocked pantry/shop has been introduced which provides for those food essentials needed (or forgotten). The quality of the frozen chicken/bacon etc was superb and very reasonably priced. Social distancing arrangements extended to the pool area. The pool itself was regularly cleaned and the concentration of chlorine checked and adjusted as required. The garden areas were well maintained and a delight to sit in. Carnwethers remains our first choice accommodation on St Mary', being located near Pelistry Bay but within easy walking distance of both Old Town, Hugh Town and the harbour. (35 minute stroll) We are booked in already for next year.....need I say more!
