Detailed Reviews
Spent 7 nights at this hotel with 5 nights including dinner. The staff are all really friendly and helpful. We were in room 15 which was on the first floor and had distant views to the sea through the trees (you might not be able to see the sea during summer when the trees have leaves). The room and bathroom were both large and had windows overlooking the front of the hotel and the road, although as there are hardly any cars on St Mary's, road noise was never a problem. The bed was comfortable and the room had everything we needed. There was an iron and ironing board to borrow on each floor. The hotel is in a great location between 2 beaches and is easy to walk into town and to the quay for daily boat trips. At first we thought that having 5 nights dinner included would be too restrictive, but now we know there are only 10 places to eat dinner in Hugh Town (1 very expensive, 1 fully booked until September and 1 only re-opened on the day we left), we are glad that we went for that option. The dinner menu changed everyday with 3 starters, 3 mains and 2 puddings, plus fruit salad, ice cream and cheese & biscuits. Being a non meat eater, there was always something that I wanted to try (starters and mains always had a fish dish and vegetarian dish) and the food was really well cooked and presented. The portions was small enough to not feel stuffed at the end of the meal and meant there was always room for dessert! Drinks prices were reasonable considering it's a hotel and there is a small bar in the restaurant where you could get a drink to enjoy in the lounge. Free tea and coffee were also available in the lounge after dinner. The only thing I didn't like was being seated on the same restaurant table each day (i'd have preferred a different view each time) and being allocated a set time for breakfast and dinner each day. It just felt a little restrictive and old fashioned to do it like this, although I understand why they do it. When we were there it was mostly couples and a small walking group which was a great mix of people and everyone talked to each other and gave recommendations for day trips and cafes, so it was a really nice relaxed stay. I'll definitely be back to Scilly one day.

We stayed at The Bell Rock Hotel for 11 nights and had a wonderful stay. The hotel is conveniently located for town and the Quay and just a short walk to 2 of St Mary's beaches. There are steps to the front door and several flights of stairs once inside and no lift, but this was not an issue for us. We arrived on the Scillonian, and our luggage was delivered to the hotel. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and the waiting staff made mealtimes a treat. Food was fab, and we would recommend half board, so you are not concerning yourself with finding places to eat (except on a Wednesday eve when the restaurant is closed). The dining room is smart casual of an evening, so you could dress up if you wanted or not. The pool was hardly ever crowded, and it was nice to have a swim of an afternoon before dinner. It's much warmer than the sea!! We had a wonderful stay and found a lot of people come back year after year. We would definitely stay there again if they would have us 😉.

The Bell Rock Hotel is located in Hugh Town on St Marys about 10 minutes walk from the quay and 5 minutes from Porth Cressa beach. Rooms are warm, cosy, comfortable, well maintained and serviced daily.
The pool is small, but most welcome after a day strolling about the islands. The hotel provides robes and extra towels for those who wish to use it. Due to COVID-19 a booking system was in place, but we never had to wait long. For the same reason staff coming into contact with guests wore masks and meal times were staggered to maintain social distancing. This was most welcome and enabled staff to offer a really personal service to guests which is very rare these days. I have a dairy intolerance and was provided with non-dairy food at both breakfast and the thee course dinner. A very reasonably priced bar is located in the dining room and tea, coffee and after dinner mints are available in the large ground floor lounge which is well stocked with items of local interest many recovered from wrecks, books and games. The use of mobile phones is discouraged in both the dining room and lounge, which is very civilised.
Special thanks must go to Daniel and Adrian for their care, attention and for making our stay so special..

There are many types of accommodation on the Isles of Scilly (IOS) and to fit everyone's budget. That's not to say it is a cheap location, far from it. This group of islands, 28 miles from Lands End can be some of the most expensive in the UK. The flights are on small 17 seater planes, the ferry from Penzance takes 3 hours and once here most things are more expensive than on the mainland.
But once here the attractions of the islands more than make up for the cost. So our base for our 6 night stay was here at the Bell Rock, in Hugh Town on St Mary's and we went with the Half Board arrangement. The choice from the menu for both breakfast and evening meal was staggering, with 3 choices of starters, main and 5 choices for desert. Breakfast was equally mouthwatering, we only had to ask and it wasn't a problem.
Staff were great, especially in these Covid times, our room (2) up on the second floor was spotless and cleaned daily, topped up with tea's and coffee and had views of both beaches, one from the bathroom and one of Town Beach from the room.
Daniel, the hotel manager was supported by Adrian, Samual and Jordan and we appreciated that they were working so we could have a break. The hotel pool looked inviting, but with the covid restrictions thought it wasn't a good idea to use it as it would have meant the staff having to clean the whole pool area after we had finished and we thought they had enough to do. Definitely we will use it next time and that suggested we would love to return.
Nice hotel, offering good food with large portions, clean and tidy rooms, friendly staff. Thank you for making our stay go so smoothly.

My husband and I had 5 nights stay in the Bell Rock hotel with Half Board . We had a good sized room with an absolutely massive bed bigger than King Size which was extremely comfortable due to a good quality mattress and pillows. The en suite bathroom was a good size with an excellent shower. The room was clean and remained so during our stay due to the efficiency of the staff coming in daily to empty the bin, change towels if required, top up tea and coffee etc. Now onto the food. There was a good choice at breakfast time with cereal, fruit juice, yoghurt, fresh fruit, croissants and porridge cooked to order along with the traditional English breakfast and toast with marmalade or jam. The evening meals always had a choice of starters, main course and desserts. There was always a meat, vegetarian or fish option for the main course. The food at the evening meals was always beautifully presented and tasted good too. I personally had soup as a starter every night as the soups were so good. After your evening meal complimentary tea and coffee are served in the small lounge. Finally I must mention all those at the hotel who work so hard to keep their customers happy, Daniel the manager, the receptionists, the chefs, the waiters and waitresses and the room staff. A huge thank you in particular to Ben, the restaurant manager who makes sure everything runs smoothly. He is happy to engage in conversation with his customers if they want him too. My husband and I would certainly stay at this hotel again. It gets 5 stars all round.

We stayed here on a half board basis and found the meals to be varied and of very good quality. As others have remarked, all of the staff that we dealt with were cheerful, polite and professional, and the waiting staff in the restaurant quickly learned personal preferences. Nowhere in Hugh Town is more than a few minutes walk away, and Porthcressa beach is practically on the (back) doorstep. We used the indoor pool 3 times, and twice we had it completely to ourselves. What luxury !
In summary a great place to stay on St. Mary's.

We stayed 2 nights at the Bell Rock hotel when our flight from St. Mary’s was delayed by fog. We left our bags in the lounge and returned around 4o’clock, thinking that they’d be in our room. They were still in the lounge and when I asked the receptionist if there was someone who could carry them for us she said that no one was available. ( I’m 77 and have had back surgery, my husbands 81 and not very steady on his feet. ) I followed her up the stairs , carrying my bag, but heard a thump and a cry, so went back to investigate. He’d tripped, banged his head on the wall and was standing with blood running down his face. I took his bag to the room and asked the receptionist for a plaster. She was completely disinterested, answered the phone which was ringing in reception and pushed a blue plaster over the counter.
The room was ok but the bed squeaked with every move, there was a notice asking us to put plastic bottles and cans in the bag provided and take them to the recycling bin behind the town hall! Really?
We were grateful to have found a room but this really was unacceptable.

Response from Daniel Lawson, General Manager at Bell Rock Hotel
Responded 22 Aug 2024
"Rude & Unacceptable"... Yes, your title and comments are, so that's one truth at least. If guests arrive prior to the room being ready/check-in, then they are welcome to drop off luggage in the lounge until checking in later. The Hotel does not have a porter, so luggage remains where it has been left until check-in. This also helps when it's a busy day as some luggage can be ambiguous if not correctly labelled, or there if there is a different name on it to the lead booking name. We DO help with luggage where required, and our afternoon receptionist DID offer to help, but her offer was declined by your husband due to, one can only assume, either pride or misogyny. You were shown and welcomed to the room. By the time a request was going to be made for a plaster you were not even in view of the reception window and the telephone had therefore already been answered. After being interrupted whilst already on the phone, our receptionist tried to help rather than make you wait, by passing you a plaster as requested, whilst dealing with the incoming call. We do run a recycling service to limit black sack waste. There is a bag in the rooms for guests to help the environment, by separating their plastics/paper/metal waste. However, glass is not recyclable in these bags, and the request is (only if inclined to) for guests to pop their personal use glass bottles purchased off the premises in a bottle bank if they're passing. As for the bed, I have been to check on this, along with housekeeping and we are dumbfounded to the alleged squeaking as it's fine; and we've not had a comment from any guests in that room since. To sum up, I can only imagine that you were thoroughly disgruntled by having your travel plans disrupted by fog affecting flights, and maybe you would not have chosen to stay with us in the first place, and therefore taken out your frustrations in our direction. We always try to help guests, and especially so when travel disruption affects people's plans, where space/availability of accommodation can be limited.

Have just had a wonderful two weeks on the Isles of Scilly and stayed here the whole time. The hotel is ideally placed for all the facilities and events (including the visit of a Walrus which was swimming in the bay 200 metres from the building.) The two beaches in Hugh Town are only minutes from the door. Meals were served safely in a spotless restaurant by the wonderful waiting staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. There was always a choice of three dishes for each course of the dinners and a good variety of menu. Daniel and his hotel team ensured a memorable stay. Thank you. We shall return.

Stayed at the Bell Rock for a week. The bed was comfortable, a king size and the room was serviced everyday. The amount of tea and coffee left in the room was amazing, and plenty of milk too. If the hotel was on the mainland, it would cater for coach parties but it has ambitions to be so much more. The dining room had a small menu, one meat based main, one fish based and one vegetarian. What they serve is good quality with fresh ingredients.
Breakfast has the usual full english, but is one of the few places left offering fried bread as standard. The only thing missing from the buffet is whole fresh fruit. Personally I have never liked seeing people walking out of the dining room with pockets bulging with fruit and pastries.
If you have a problem, the staff will correct it as soon as possible. Like all hotels on the Scillies, they are struggling for staff. Even though they are exhausted, the guest is looked after. What else can you ask for from a hotel.

Our room was clean and comfortable. The en suite bathroom featured a bath and was also spotlessly clean, with both areas being well serviced each day. We booked bed, breakfast and evening meal terms and found the food, though not cordon bleu, to be well cooked, well presented and with an adequate choice of dishes. The staff were all friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our week here. The reason it's only got two stars is that there's no lift so you do have to climb stairs to move around in the hotel.
