As the gentle chugging of a tractor heralds the arrival of your luggage, you know The White House Hotel is special. After all, how many hotels can boast a Britain in Bloom Gold Award-winning island as their garden, a harbour-side setting and such spectacular sea views? Tradition is cherished at this unique hotel to which many families have been coming for three generations. You'll find a variety of delightful bedrooms, where you won't find televisions, clocks or telephones, as somehow they don't seem appropriate on Herm. You will find world class cuisine in the 2 rosette Conservatory Restaurant, and exceptional service from our friendly team. The Four Star White House Hotel was the first business in the Channel Islands to achieve WorldHost Customer service status. The White House Hotel is delighted to have a fantastic new world-class head chef on the team and is looking forward to welcoming all returning and new guests in the 2019 season - open from April 1st - November 3rd.

Stayed two nights with friends to celebrate a 60th birthday on a dinner bed and breakfast basis. Not cheap but it is a very pretty hotel on a small island and hotel guests have stunning views from their rooms and the hotel grounds. For these aspects the hotel deserves a 5* rating. We probably stayed in the nicest rooms in the hotel with a generous balcony/patio area with the same stunning views. The rooms were generous sized and appeared to have been recently redecorated to a perfectly reasonable standard. The main light was the old fashioned energy saving round globe type and would have benefitted from being replaced by LED downlighters. The doors to the room and the patio were not capable of being locked and these flaws were never fixed during our stay despite us reporting them.
Not a real issue as the place seemed ultra safe. The Bathroom was adequate with a shower over the bath arrangement and tricky controls to work the shower. No phone or tv in room which was a small disappointment. Overall I would rate the room as typical of a 3* hotel. The hotel seems to pride itself on its food but this was overall a big disappointment. Like all hotels at the present time The White House is experiencing difficulty with staff recruitment and I suspect this shows in the quality of the food offerings. Breakfast was reasonable with a good choice offered in a buffet style but not a 5* level. Dinner was not great to be honest. A scallops starter was meagre and a monkfish main was overcooked on the first night and deserts were limited choice and unimaginative. The second night I had the scallops as a main and although there were more scallops the salad accompaniment rather let it down. Part of the hotel is The Ship Inn and the food offerings we encountered here were poor and ridiculously overpriced. For eg a Guernsey cheddar chees snadwhich with ??? chutney priced at around 13 or 14 ponds manifested itself as two pieces of sliced bread filled with a slice of processed cheese and a smear of Branston pickle. Other members of our party had a prawn and crab sandwhich which was very underfilled slices of the same sliced bread. I have had crab sandwhiches at beach kiosks on Guernsey which had 3 times as much filling for a third of the price. A comment was made to hotel staff re these and no feedback resulted. Overall the waiting staff at the hotel were cheerful and a delight to be served by even if they were a little untrained. The weather was fantastic and Herm is a magical place for an away from it all 2 day break but the hotel needs to sharpen its act given the prices it charges

I would rate the Hotel 5 star under normal circumstances, but under “COVID” claim to be short of staff and will attend rooms if your stay is longer than 3 nights, however they still charge the same.
The staff are very good, the restaurant manager is a gem, a very nice touch was the Island manager making an appearance just before the boats arrival and making an attempt to speak to as many guests as possible.
A very relaxing few days, food was good and well presented.

Just returned from an amazing stay at the White House Hotel. We only booked for one night but wish we could have stayed longer!
Our room was a sea view balcony which had exceptional views of the harbour and neighbouring beach, and the view of the sunset in the evening was amazing.
The island itself is picturesque and well maintained, offering plenty of facilities and a good choice restaurant and cafes, we particularly enjoyed the Ship Inn which had a great menu and the service was faultless.
My only complaint is that there is no direct ferry from Jersey to Herm, nonetheless we would definitely return and highly recommend a visit.

Herm is always special, even after the 100th time.
The location is great of course, the staff are very helpful and did some "above and beyond" things for us, a group of 17 with kids of various ages.

The room allocated was past the gift shop on the right. The old cottage was boiling hot compared to the outside the entire time. It could have done with a desk fan to put on the windowsill at the very least. The small window was the antithesis of child safe. Otherwise the room was ok. Nice selection of tea and coffee. Clean and tidy.

The conservatory restaurant...... Whatever they are trying to achieve with the dress code and semi fine dining experienced is not working. The food and the poorly decorated rooms are below average for Guernsey standards. There were no vegetarian options on the menu and I had to enquire and ask at which point they went off and resurrected an old vegetarian menu. The avo and hummus starter was good. The main, a potato cake, was pathetic in size and flavor and nutritional value.
The venison was over done, the eton mess was almost entirely cream and missing some key components.
A three course meal with a side (seemingly essential to the main) cost £45. I've had better food in Crabby Jacks. Top quality food at Octopus is a lot cheaper than this. They are simply punching above their weight in that restaurant. They can get away with this to some extent due to the monopolistic nature of Herm.

Herm itself has had some improvements over the years which are welcomed. It has however become more littered and the vehicle traffic has increased substantially. It's a bit of a worry supervising young children near or on the tracks when quads and other ATVs are rushing about. Most drive sensible speeds, a few do not.

I hope the management read this and take onboard some of the points.

This was our second stay in 12 months and whilst the first time we stayed in the hotel, due to excessive noise because of thin walls this time we booked a self contained cottage at over £250 a night.

Things did not start well when opposite the "private" garden are other hotel apartments that are dog friendly. Some one had seen fit to take their dog to Herm, leave it in the apartment and for the whole afternoon there was whining and barking so we could not use the garden.

Despite the cost there were no facilities in the cottage other than tea and coffee making equipment. No cooker, no microwave, no fridge. This is the hotel trying to make you eat in their restaurant which itself has a poor choice menu and is over £40 per person.

The bar staff in the hotel were superb and could not be faulted 10 out of 10 to Elliot and Scott. Unfortunately, and what really grates, is the Irish maitre'D. Having gone to the lounge for a couple of drinks whilst my wife tried to relax in the cottage prior to dinner, for the next hour he proceeded to check with everyone else if they were eating in the hotel, what time they would like to eat, and passing out menus. Every time he passed me he ignored me or looked away. Whilst I was not yet changed for dinner and was in shorts I can only think that he did not approach me for any reason because I have tattoos on both hands. This was very disappointing and even when seeing him the following morning and saying hello he completely ignored me.

We will certainly not be staying again if this is the general attitude. This is the first time I have left a review on Trip Advisor as I had left this feedback with the hotel questionnaire hoping I might get a response but this has not been forthcoming.

A completely underwhelming and expensive experience with poor service apart from the two bar staff mentioned above.

For the record I am a retired executive director (despite being in my early forties) so there is no reason to judge a book by its cover - something that certain individuals on the staff seemed to ignore.

Terrible food, terrible room but lovely hosptable staff

Our evening meal was of a poor standard. My starter of smoked salmon was mediocre the main course plaice and salmon was dry as a bone and flavourless, apart from the salmon which had a strong cheesy taste (it was not a cheese dish) the desert was an apple tart tartan, the pastry was very undercooked and inedible. For the extortionate prices you pay the food is incredibly poor.

Water pressure in our room was poor and beds & pillows were rock hard. We were woken up in the night by the loud, growling noise of the radiator. With that and the rock hard beds everyone had 2 nights of poor sleep.

Cooked brekfast buffet in the morning was mediocre.

We stayed for two nights and our room wasn’t cleaned during our stay at all so we had to ask for fresh towels.

The one good thing about the hotel was the smiling, hospitable staff who were happy to help with our concerns.

Overall, wouldn’t stay again, not worth the money for what you get.

Rooms a bit dated and stuffy, shower randomly hot and cold during use. The 'please clean our room' sign was left on the outside of our room door from day 1, housekeeping failed to attend despite reception assuring us they would resulting in no housekeeping for our entire 5 day stay, wet dirty towels tea/coffee facilities not replaced and no cleaning all week. Noisy quad bikes passing our room from around 6am daily and noisy pub nearby until late most evenings. Good food in The ship, Mermaid and main restaurant and a very good breakfast. Some very good staff and all in a lovely setting but overall well below 4 star.

Positives:
Beautiful island, lovely walks.
Friendly atmosphere.

Negatives:
Expensive hotel lacking quality, some poorly trained hospitality staff, very average food for a premium price in restaurant, some tired areas and bedrooms.
Overall a very disappointing 2 night stay for the 9 adults and one baby at just over £3,000.
Unlikely to return unless there is a marked improvement.

We were back to Herm staying for the third time over the years, the cost of staying was expensive but we thought about past visits and were happy about this. The meals in the Conservatory were excellent and because we were vegetarian the chef gave extra items for us. However, it always used to be old style values, tea and coffee available in the lounge all day - gone. A light lunch in the Ship Inn - gone. Beach cafes closed with no notification. We were also disturbed by the number of quad bikes that were travelling at quite a speed up and down passed our room in the Foxglove Cottage starting at 8am on the dot. The staff are hard working, polite and cannot do enough for you which is so commendable. We have been day trippers to Herm since 1985 and even after Peter and Jenny Wood died the values were still the same. It now seems to be just a money making island which is so sad. We will be told that there is a lot of money being spent on infrastructure but we would have spent more if it was not so expensive. Sorry Herm you are not what you used to be.

Herm is amazing, no question! However, staying in the hotel on this occasion was far from amazing. The room was clean and comfortable and the housekeeping team do a stirling job, given how short staffed they are.
The breakfast is a Buffet style which, no matter how early you get there, seems only able to offer a lukewarm ‘hot buffet’ with congealed egg, dry mushroom and baked beans with a skin over them. The toaster is only occasionally successful in toasting both sides of the bread, that’s is, if you’re prepared to stand in a queue.
What happened to the breakfasts that were ordered at your table and delivered hot?
The evening meal is priced at £40 regardless of what you order. Sides, which are the vegetables one would expect to accompany any main meal, are charged at extra £4.95 a dish. For a vegetarian- paying £5 for a small dish of veg is in itself ridiculous, so why would they expect you to pay £40 for a pile of vegetables on a bigger plate?
The menu for the Monks Bar was uninspiring and the Ship Inn ran the same menu. The best food BY FAR was at the Mermaid, where chef couldn’t do enough to provide a tasty filling meal at a sensible cost. Thank you Mermaid chef!
Will I return?. Yes, but back to self catering where I know I can eat healthily and within a sensible budget.

Is the outdoor pool heated through out the year?
Answer from Stevebacon

No, the pool is not heated throughout the year. Think twice however about going to stay at the hotel as it is over priced, understaffed, poor quality food and alot of the hotel is drab and tired. The island is beautiful and staff friendly but catering trained they are not.
