We thoroughly enjoyed our four-night stay at Lower Dover, and feel we couldn't have picked a better place from which to experience inland Belize. Our cabin was clean, quaint, and in great condition. The meals were nutritious and filling, and gave us a chance to get to know other travelers, as well as the hostel's owner, Maddy. The hostel's setting in the midst of a small farm, jungle, ruins, and river was extremely pleasant. Maddy really made all the difference, with her relaxed, friendly attitude, her willingness to answer a multitude of questions beforehand, and her help in setting up local tours and drivers. We greatly enjoyed a trip to the ATM cave (the hostel's proximity allowed us to be one of the first groups in that morning) and to Tikal, both arranged by Maddy. After we left Lower Dover, we visited a very posh coastal resort, but Lower Dover is the place that most sticks in our mind, and the place we'd be most likely to visit again. Thanks, Maddy, for providing us with such a wonderful experience!

Lower Dover was the highlight of my trip in Belize, and so far within Central America. Maddy and Bill have created an oasis here where you can spend your days trekking in the jungle, exploring Mayan ruins that are still being uncovered, explore the property with one of their dogs who are the best and swim in the river in between it all, keeping you nice and cool.

I stayed in the dorms, they were spacious with the bathroom separated from the beds, a seperate change room that doubled as somewhere to dry swimmers etc and big lockers. The solar-powered, rainwater showers were also a luxury. There’s an outdoor bar, and plenty of spaces to just hang out.

The ATM caves were close by, Maddy booked my trip and we were one of the first in which was great. The location isn’t too far from San Ignacio and it was easy to get the local bus into town.

The family style dinners were a highlight, with big portions of healthy meals dished up every night, after weeks of travel this kind of food was needed! It was also a great way to meet others staying at Lower Dover and many interesting conversations came about.

If I make it back to Belize I will certainly be staying again.

Lower Dover is a treasure in the jungle you cannot miss. The property and the beautiful wood houses have access to a river in the middle of the jungle and , last but not least, in the property you can visit a maya ruin which is amazing!! It feels like being in an Indians Jones movie for real, for me it was emotional to walk around these uncovered ruins in the middle of a luxury jungle. Magdalena is a fantastic host, I loved her kindness, her amazing stories, her dinner and healthy breakfast, I think she is great. Thanks to her we were able to visit ATM early in the morning avoiding all the many tourists that visit it every day. So Thank you Magdalena!! We highly recommend to stay in this beautiful relaxing place immerse in the nature!! Chiara, Antonio and Henry from Italy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lower Dover. We didn't have a car, but a bus stop was a 10 minute walk away so it was easy to get into San Ignacio. Maddie was a wonderful, helpful host. She dropped us off in San Ignacio one day, had great suggestions on things to do, ate dinner with us many nights, played board games with us, and made delicious food. We especially enjoyed the vegetarian dinners she made for us when there weren't other guests.

We stayed in the Red Cabana. It was perfect for us and included a comfortable bed and outdoor toilet. They were building a bar very close to the cabana when we were there, so that may take away from the lovely deck lounging atmosphere.

Her property was great for meandering through the forest exploring ruins, and looking for wildlife. It was a great place to chill for a few days.

We had the most experience at Lower Dover and can't wait to come back! Maddie is the absolute sweetest and very knowledgable. She took as on a tour of the ruins and it blew our minds! This hostel is sitting on so much history, this is a very unique opportunity a place to stay! We got the home cooked breakfast and dinners and they were all so so delicious! The cabin was comfy and cozy. Don't miss out on staying here!!

Mady is an amazing Hostel Hostess. She takes care of you like you’ve known each other for decades. The rooms (we had private accommodations) are beautifully rustic with jungle charm. Her meals are fantastic and served at a table where you’re garanteed to make new friends. Thank you for the amazing experience!

Not what I expected at all! It was better!! Had the property all to myself which was nice. There’s some trails you can walk, spots to jump in and cool off along the trail. There’s even some ruins that are in site!! Maddie, the host, was awesome. Cooked dinner and breakfast for me everyday, small few, worth it. You’re not really close to San Ignacio, short bus ride. Maddie is a wealth of information about the ruins and pretty much anything Belize you need to know. 10/10 - will stay here again!!

Although initially sceptical about staying at this hostel as it is actually around 10 kilometres outside of San Ignacio we actually found a real gem in the Belizean jungle.
Located on a farm, where the owners grow huge amounts of their own fruit and vegetables, there are trails on which to go walking, Mayan ruins to see and the Belize river only five minutes away on foot.
The cabin we stayed in was very roomy and comfortable - mosquito nets provided. Whilst the owner was really friendly and helpful, giving us a lift into town and back for dinner on the first night and making us a delicious breakfast and dinner the next day! Also our desire to go fishing in the river was satisfied as the hostel provided us with a fishing rod and bait so that we could give it a go.
Despite being out of San Ignacio this hostel is actually closer to the ATM caves and given that is the main tourist attraction in this part of Belize it really is very convenient. The hostel set up the tour for us, we were picked up outside the front gate and it was only a half an hour's drive away.
Would definitely come back and whole heartedly recommend this place!

I have to be honest because I wish I knew some information before I booked Lower Dover. My boyfriend and I agree that our stay at Lower Dover was the only thing that we would have changed, but overall we had an AMAZING trip to Belize. Lower Dover was definitely in the jungle, and when you are in the jungle you are guests to the jungle. So do not be surprised to see several tarantulas in the grass and outside of the den at night, bats in your room, or frogs in your shower / toilet. You are in the jungle!! This shocked me at first as I remembered how close we were to the jungle! I guess I was surprised at how far we were away from everything at Lower Dover. We were thinking about renting a car, but Madeline suggested that we don't. We took a service from the airport (great recommendation Madeline!) and ended up having to call him (Teddy) whenever we needed to go anywhere... It was a feeling of being a little trapped in Lower Dover and the cost of transportation definitely added up. They charge $10-$15 (if I remember correctly) per meal, which for Belize standards is a lot! And since you are so far out, you really dont have many other options so you have to get the food. And overall, I was very impressed with the native food in Belize, which I would have preferred to the food that was made at the Lower Dover. It was good, but when I travel, I want to eat the native food-- just once again off the mark for me. If you add up the cost of the lodging with the cost of the food, you could stay at a much nicer and centrally located (while still in the jungle) lodge. At dinner one night I asked where the Mayan ruins were... I think I was expecting to be able to walk to them and looking at the photos from the website, I thought they were going to be pretty big ones on the site, and they waved their arms around and said that they were all around us underneath the ground. Madeline was incredibly nice and helpful, Bill was minimal on the interaction, and there was one other group of female travelers that were nice and social. Honestly, I think this place just wasn't what I expected. In talking to other travelers on our ATM tour, they stayed at places that were about the same price but seemed like a way better place to stay. Few of the tour operators knew about Lower Dover or where to pick us up. It really was far from San Ignacio, which is a cute little town. This is a great place for groups of people traveling that want to be in nature and together in a communal, affordable place. But for me, I wanted a romantic getaway with my boyfriend, and I think that we would have stayed at a place that was more central, with more options available. I was looking for a vacation to unwind a bit and I think Lower Dover was just off the mark-- at least my mark. Sorry for the negative review, I just wanted to be honest for those out there that may be looking for a vacation spot like I was!

Response from madreynolds, Owner at Lower Dover
Responded 2 Jul 2011
It is unfortunate that this guest had an unfavorable experience at Lower Dover. The guest states that she wished she had more information about us before booking. Our website provides accurate and current information on Lower Dover, we are what we say and actually take great pride in the fact that we are preserving a significant piece (90 acres) of jungle on the Belize River. It seems that her complaint focuses on our location being remote? We are located equally distant between Belmopan and San Ignacio, ten miles either way, one half mile off the main highway. She indicated that she felt trapped at Lower Dover. This is a little confusing and amusing at the same time since the guest indicates that it was a great recommendation to not rent a vehicle. We are a ten minute walk or quick drop-off from the highway with regularly scheduled bus service. The guests chose not to rent a vehicle and not take the bus, instead using local taxi service between Lower Dover and San Ignacio. However, even with this option the actual cost was significantly less than if they rented a vehicle for $100US/day and $6 US per gallon for gas. Our location is actually more central and accessible to the attractions throughout Cayo than other resorts/lodges that are located off the highway, so we are not sure what is meant by that comment. We are located only 1.5 miles from the access road to the Pine Ridge. If you are going to ATM Cave we are the last pick-up and first drop off for the tour. If you are going to Tikal we drop off in Cayo or the tour operator picks you up. The guest stated that the tour operators did not know who we were. The Belizean translation for this is they probably have not done business with us. We partner with one preferred tour operator who over the years has proven to be extremely reliable and our guests give high marks for their guides. We DO NOT REQUIRE our guests to use this operator. Regardless of the operator, we have a 100 foot square sign on the Western Highway with Lower Dover on both sides. Therefore any tour guide going by to and from ATM Cave sees that sign at least twice per day. They know we exist! Regarding meals. Our price for dinner is $12.50 US which if you check the other peer destinations is the most reasonable of any of these resort/lodges that are "remote" as identified by this guest. Belizeans fry, bake, BBQ, curry or stew their entrees and add rice and beans. That is exactly what we do and as indicated by this guest is GOOD. But since you can get rice and beans with rice and beans in Belize anywhere, we chose not serve it as part of our entree. But we do provide a very good meal for that value as is indicated by our other reviews, soup, salad, vegetable and if the cook's assistant is up to it, fresh bread. There are also two restaurants in Village that are good and affordable. We are not offended by our guests opting to eat off premise. The ruins located at Lower Dover are only a five minute walk from the cabanas. The site is comparable to Cahal Pech just unexcavated. The Library sits on a mound structure immediately adjacent to the bunkroom, the main residence and the dining room. So yes the ruins are all around and accessible via a network of trails. To our knowledge all of them are above ground! It is difficult to understand exactly what this guests expectations were that Lower Dover does not provide. We are centrally located, we provide a jungle setting only one half mile from the main road in the country, and our prices within the peer group of resorts are extremely reasonable. You can not find a more laid back environment with the access we offer. San Ignacio is NOT laid back, seeing toucans, parrots, the occasional howler monkey family, and if really lucky a tapir or other wild life seems at least to us to be a better definition of unwinding and we offer that. We are a small resort that prides itself in providing our guests the best experience possible.

How far is ATM from the hostel? Thanks for help
Cayo District8 contributions
The entrance road to the ATM Cave is in the village of Teakettle, about 15 mintues away from Lower Dover. Add another 15-20 minutes of dirt road and you arrive in the parking lot. The cave is another 20 minute hike from the where the tour vehicles are parked. One of the advantages of staying at Lower Dover is our close proximity to the cave (shorter car ride and 1st ones to return.
