Back in Makry Gialos after a two year absence! Back in the Balcony Apartment of the White Houses for our fourth stay. It was as if we had just left it, the day before, but freshly painted. Just like coming to our “third home”! The “welcome hamper” is a great added bonus which we are always grateful for. When we first opted for the White Houses I aske my partner what she would like. “To see the sea from the window when I wake up.” Well, that was certainly on the cards. In addition there is the harbour, Limanaki beach, and the bay as well, thrown in as an added bonus. Our nomadic days are over, so we are more than happy with The White Houses of Crete. See you in’23, Nikos and Jill.

Myself and my mother stayed at The White Houses this October. It was absolutely perfect...charming, chic, rustic - everything you hope when you head to Crete. We sat outside out apartment each morning a stones throw away from the sea, watching fishing boats. Great restaurants nearby, hikes, and the beach. Couldn't recommend enough.

We recently stayed with friends at the The White Houses in Makry Gialos. Our home for a week was the Junior suite on ground floor and our friends had the Junior suite with balcony just above us. The White Houses are located in the perfect position between the row of restaurants lining the port and two beaches. The house itself was beautifully appointed in what you would expect from a traditional Greek cottage in a little fishing village. Upon our welcome we found the kitchen stocked with all the basics plus a few extra surprises like the bowl of fruit on the kitchen table and the bottle of white wine in the fridge. Our ground floor apartment also contained a washing machine which we greatly appreciated by this stage of our holiday. Every morning, we would sit outside to drink our coffee and have breakfast (care of the nearby bakery no more than 5 minute walk away) and every night after dinner, we'd be out there again, sipping on ouzo and watching the world go by. The pier where we met our chartered boat to take us out for one of the the days was practically on our doorstep - just a simple 2 minute walk away. Really, why would you say anywhere else!…

Our third visit to the White Houses, particularly the Balcony Apartment. Sleeps two and the balcony of the name has views across the small harbour and Makry Gialos bay facing east.Spacious with all mod cons it is a great base for exploring the local area and the beach. This is a matter of 50 metres outside the door. There are many restaurants the same distance from the front door, and they all serve local Cretan food at prices you would eat for! the most we paid for an evening meal for two, three courses and wine was €49. The apartments are cleaned every second day, bedding and towels changed as are the provided beach towels. All the staff, from Gunnar, (owner) through Nikos (Manager) to Jill and Rena the Ladies who look after the cleaning side are friendly and helpful. When you arrive in the apartment, there is a "Welcome Basket" of food and drink to tide you over the "first day"! Free. Makry Gialos is a two hour drive from the main airport at Heraklion. It's worth the drive through the mountains to get there. As an aside, in June, Gunnar arranges a Music Festival of Chamber Music. That is well worth going to see/hear. Brilliant young talent, and the venue is spectacular. Already booked for 2020!!!…

What a wonderful and easy place to be.This area of southern Crete is still a little untouched. The White Houses have everything you need for a relaxed vacation. All the practicalities have been taken care of for you - just move in and it´s home. The interior is spacious and has a delicate design. There is an outside area on the 2nd floor where you can relax, eat a meal or just enjoy the view of the sea.The beach is literally right outside your door, just a few steps across a little road. There are plenty of other beaches to your right and to your left. Plenty of good places to eat too. If you are a classical music enthusiast there is a music festival with top international musicians in June every year, "Casa dei Mezzo Festival". Thank you Gunnar!

We, grandparents, parents & toddler, have just returned from a weeks stay in the 'White House' and we loved every minute. The property was just as described, beautifully clean and well equipped, idyllically situated opposite a small harbor and overlooking the beautiful bay of Makrigialos. The beach is just yards from your door, the sea was calm and very safe for the young and old, sun beds owned by the cafes & bars to the rear of the beach were free if you bought drinks. A number of very good restaurants and bars surround the bay, all very reasonably priced, would recommend the delicious local Cretan dishes. There are a small number of shops selling pottery, textiles etc, mini markets with excellent fruit & olives and and a bakery with delicious breads and breakfast pastries. For those who like history there are a number of Roman ruins and for those who like water sports there is everything from sedate paddle boarding to the more adventurous jet ski, all of which we tried. It may be a bit further than the more touristy north but it is worth the trip south, we found everybody very welcoming & friendly, if you want a relaxing holiday whatever your age we cannot recommend it enough.…

We stayed for three nights in the "Harbor" apartment which opens out onto the pavement overlooking the small harbour. It was beautifully clean and comfortable. The shower room and kitchen were spotless. The beach and tavernas are yards away, and we enjoyed our stay enormously. There was an extremely generous welcome package, and Nikos and Gunnar were very helpful and welcoming. We shall certainly be returning!

Wonderfully clean, nicely decorated and comfortable one bed apartment on the edge of town. Beach and all other tavernas only yards away, but more lively and busy. Gunnar made us feel very welcome and the ample welcome package was very well received as we arrived later that expected and were thirsty and hungry. Will definitely return and recommend. Can be great for a large special occasion and rent all the apartments to share with friends.

If you want a beautiful, authentic and immaculately clean apartment in a fabulous location for a chill out beach holiday, with opportunities to explore, then book this. We stayed in the balcony apartment which had lovely views across the harbour, beach and bay. The cleaners did a fabulous job and the apartment was cleaned with new bed linen and towels every 3 days. We hired a car and always managed to park close to the apartment. The welcome pack was the most generous we have ever had and set us up until we could do a bigger shop in the many small supermarkets in the resort. The beach and tavernas are a few metres away and the difficulty we found was choosing which taverna to go to as they are all lovely and the standard and choice of food was amazing especially if you want to eat as the Greeks do. An added bonus for us was the very reasonable prices for food and drink, so much cheaper than comparable meals in England. Most of the tavernas offer their sun beds and umbrellas to customers for the day if you buy a drink from them in the morning and some virtually offered a beach service, coming to your sun lounger to ask if they could bring you another drink. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this and hope to return in the future. Many thanks to Gunnar, Nikos and Jill and their team for their hospitality. …

Perfect Island Holiday... What is advertised on Their Website was all there... Facilities were very good...very clean... Perfect location, all the Restaurants were a couple of yards away....view was unbelievable. Hope to go back one day. Nikos and Jill were very helpful and informative.
